1Touch them once today with nothing else attached.
A hand on the shoulder as you pass. Sitting close on the sofa. Reaching for their hand while you talk about nothing. No agenda, no next step. Just contact.
Where it sits. Gottman method, Turn Toward; affection and touch
Islamic evidence
The Prophet ﷺ raced ʿĀʾishah on a journey, and she outran him; years later, when she had grown heavier, he raced her again and won, and he said: this one for that one. Physical ease and play between spouses is not incidental to the marriage. It is part of how the Sunnah shows it being lived.
“Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live with in tranquillity: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect”
Qur'an 30:21
“Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: while she was on a journey along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): I had a race with him (the Prophet) and I outstripped him on my feet. When I became fleshy, (again) I had a race with him (the Prophet) and he outstripped me. He…”

Touch is a channel, not a request. Keeping it open is separate work from using it.

In many long marriages touch quietly narrows until it means only one thing: an approach, an initiation, a request. When that happens, the whole physical channel becomes something to brace for, and casual affection disappears along with it. Decoupling touch from initiation reopens the channel. The practical version is undemanding contact in ordinary moments, especially moments where nothing is happening. If touch has become loaded in your marriage, this is the single most useful thing to change, and it will feel awkward before it feels natural.
Why it works. Affectionate touch has measurable regulatory effects and forms a daily reciprocal loop with perceived responsiveness. Touch raises the sense of being cared for, which raises touch the following day.

Touch with no request attached is a language of safety all its own.
Where it sits. Gottman method, Turn Toward; affection and touch
Islamic evidence
The Prophet ﷺ was tender with his family in the smallest moments of the day. Touch woven into the ordinary is exactly that tenderness.
“Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live with in tranquillity: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect”
Qur'an 30:21
“Aishah said:I would eat flesh from a bone when I was menstruating, then hand it over to the Prophet(ﷺ) and he would put his mouth where I had put my mouth: I would drink, then hand it over to him, and he would put his mouth( at the place) where I drank”
Psychological evidence
A partner's handhold measurably calms the brain's alarm at threat. Touch with nothing asked of it is a language of safety all its own, and it needs no reason.

Nearness often comforts before any words can, and asks nothing in return.
Where it sits. Gottman method, Turn Toward; affection and touch

Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all things, the Prophet ﷺ said, and nearness offered without words is one of gentleness's plainest forms.

“It was narrated from Aishah that the Prophet(ﷺ) said:"Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all things”
Psychological evidence
When someone is distressed, closeness often reaches them before any sentence can. Moving toward them first says I am here more convincingly than advice.

Shared lightness is not frivolous; it is a thread that keeps two people close.
Where it sits. Gottman method, Turn Toward; affection and touch
Islamic evidence
The Prophet ﷺ smiled often and joked gently, saying he spoke only what was true even in play. Shared laughter is not idle; it is a thread of warmth.
“You [believers] are permitted to lie with your wives during the night of the fast: they are [close] as garments to you, as you are to them. God was aware that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you: now you can lie with…”

“Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allah said :"Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity, commanding good and forbidding evil is charity, your giving directions to a man lost in the land is charity for you. Your seeing for a man with bad…”

Lightness is not the opposite of a serious relationship; it is part of what keeps one alive. One deliberate laugh together loosens a tension the hard talks cannot reach.

A shared bit of play refreshes a couple more than another serious conversation can.

There was ease and play in the Prophet ﷺ's home. He once raced ʿĀ'ishah on a journey. A little shared silliness keeps a marriage young.
