1Do not say the small unkind thing about them to someone else.
Today, notice the moment when you could make an easy joke at your spouse's expense, to a friend, a sibling, your mother, the group chat. Don't. Say nothing, or say something true and good instead.

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever conceals the fault of his brother, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. Sitr, covering, is not dishonesty. It is a refusal to make another person's weakness into currency. Your spouse has the strongest claim to it of anyone.
“Believers, avoid making too many assumptions- some assumptions are sinful- and do not spy on one another or speak ill of people behind their backs: would any of you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother? No, you would hate it. So be mindful of God: God…”
Qur'an 49:12
“It was narrated from Ibn `Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:“Whoever conceals the (hidden) fault of his Muslim brother, Allah (SWT) will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever exposes the fault of his Muslim brother, Allah will expose his…”

The small disloyalty is rarely dramatic. It is the affectionate eye-roll when their name comes up, the funny story that makes them slightly ridiculous, the complaint shared with a sibling that you would never say to their face. Each one is minor. The accumulation is not. Two things happen: the listener's picture of your spouse quietly degrades, and, more importantly, so does yours, because you have to keep believing the version of them you described. Protecting their reputation when they are absent is one of the few relationship behaviours that costs nothing and that they may never even know about.
Why it works. Contempt is the most corrosive of the observed markers of relationship deterioration, and it is rehearsed in private before it appears in the room. What you say about a spouse to others shapes what you come to believe about them.
When not to. Covering faults is not the same as concealing harm. If you are protecting someone who is hurting you, that is not sitr, and you should talk to someone you trust.

Contempt is the most corrosive tone in a marriage; its opposite is plain, warm respect.

No group should mock another, the Qur'an warns, for the mocked may be better than the mockers. Sarcasm at home is mockery in a smaller coat.
“Believers, no one group of men should jeer at another, who may after all be better than them; no one group of women should jeer at another, who may after all be better than them; do not speak ill of one another; do not use offensive nicknames for one another.…”

Contempt, the eye-roll or the cutting joke, is the single strongest predictor of a marriage failing. Removing it from even one conversation protects the fondness everything else rests on.

Whoever conceals his brother's fault, the Prophet ﷺ said, Allah conceals his. Guarding their dignity when they are absent is that concealment in daily form.
