What the venting research found, and what it does not show

This is the best short answer to let it out, and we would rather give it to you with its limits attached than dressed up as more certain than it is.

What the research says

Bushman BJ (2002). Does venting anger feed or extinguish the flame? Catharsis, rumination, distraction, anger, and aggressive responding. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 28(6), 724 to 731 doi

People who hit a punching bag while thinking about the person who had angered them went on to behave more aggressively afterwards, not less. The limits are real and the paper's own design sets them: a single laboratory session, undergraduate participants, and a stand in measure of aggression. So it is evidence against the idea that letting it out drains it, rather than proof about what happens in a family kitchen.
