Before you read on

If your doubt is a question you went looking for, and a good answer satisfies you and you move on, this is the wrong course and lesson one says so plainly. This one is about doubt that behaves like anxiety. Two things go outside a course and go quickly. Any thought of ending your life, or a settled belief that you are damned and it is already decided, needs somebody today rather than a lesson. And doubt that arrived suddenly and out of character, or that comes alongside hearing voices or fixed unusual beliefs, needs a medical assessment before anything else.

Lesson 3 of 6

The belief that does the damage

Underneath most of this there is one belief, and it is worth stating in the exact words people actually use.

Having this thought means I have left Islam. Or the softer version, which does the same work. If I really believed, this would not be happening.

That belief is what converts a passing thought into eight months of searching, because if it is true then the thought is not a thought, it is a verdict, and a verdict has to be overturned before you can sleep.

It is also not in the material. What is in the material is close to the opposite, and it is not obscure, and somebody should have told you years ago.
