The part that surprises people

The people who put a task off most are very often the people who care about it most.

That is not a paradox once you see the mechanism. Caring more makes failing matter more, and a task that could tell you something unbearable about yourself is a task that feels bad to approach. So the more the result matters to you, the more the thinking about it costs, and the more attractive it becomes to do almost anything else.

Not caring looks like this from the outside. It is very rarely what is going on.
