First. Nervous systems respond less to repetition

Read a passage that once moved you for the fortieth time and it will move you less. That is not you going cold. It is a property of the tissue you are made of.

Habituation is the plainest fact in the whole of learning research. Repeated input produces a smaller response. It happens with sound, with smell, with scenery, and it happens with an act of worship.

Notice what it does and does not touch. The feeling attached to the act declines. The value of the act does not. Those are two different quantities and people collapse them into one.
