Ta ziyah, and what it is actually for

Condolence in the tradition is not a formality, and its stated purpose is worth knowing, because it says something about what grieving is understood to be.

Ta ziyah is recommended, it may be offered at any time, and the purpose given for it is to lighten the grief of the bereaved and to help them return to their life. In outline, that is the classical position, and the details belong to a scholar.

Read that last clause again. Helping the bereaved resume ordinary life is not a modern importation from a psychology paper. It is the stated purpose of a practice the tradition already recommends.

Which means the restoration side of this lesson has a place in the religion, and you do not have to justify it to anyone.
