Then reveal it.

A relative tells you that crying makes the deceased suffer, and that you should stop. What is the honest answer?

The reports permitting tears are sound and well known, and the clearest of them is the Prophet weeping at the death of his own son and calling it mercy. There is also a much argued narration about the dead and the weeping of the living, and it has been contested among the scholars for a very long time, including by A'isha. We are not putting a reference or a ruling on that here, because we have not verified one. What can be said plainly is that no sound report makes ordinary tears into a sin.
