The 120 day line, and what it does not decide

There is a threshold in the classical framework at around 120 days from conception, roughly four months, at which point the tradition holds that the soul is breathed in.

That threshold changes rulings. Whether the child is washed, shrouded, named, prayed over, and how inheritance is treated.

Here is what it does not change, and this is the part that has to be said first because it is the part that gets said last. It does not decide whether you grieve, and it does not decide whether there was something there. A parent told before four months that there was nothing there has been given a sentence that is careless as theology and cruel as care. Losing a pregnancy at seven weeks is a bereavement.

Keep those two apart. The ruling is a ruling. Your grief is not waiting on it.
