Which one is which
Answer it in your head first, then look.
Two people. One sees nobody from Monday to Friday and is perfectly all right. The other has family in the house, colleagues all day and a circle on Wednesdays, and cries in the car. What does that tell you about the difference between being alone and being lonely?
That they are separate measurements and the second one is not produced by the first. Alone is the count of contact. Lonely is the distance between what you want from people and what you feel you are getting. A high count does not close the gap, which is why being told to see more people so often lands as useless advice on someone who is already surrounded.
