What couple therapy actually is

Two of you in a room with somebody trained, usually for an hour a week, usually for somewhere between eight and twenty sessions.

Nobody adjudicates who was right. A good therapist spends the first sessions working out what the pattern is, sees each of you alone at some point, and then works on what happens between you rather than on the history of grievances.

Ask for someone who names a specific approach, most commonly emotionally focused therapy or behavioural couple therapy, rather than counselling in general. If your faith matters to how this is handled, say so at the first meeting. Working alongside somebody religiously knowledgeable is better practice than working around them.
