What help actually looks like

Not what people fear. In most places the first door is a family doctor, a health visitor, a school, or a local parenting service, and the conversation is about what your week is like.

Parenting programmes are the most common thing offered, they usually run in a group across eight to twelve weeks, and the components with the best evidence behind them are the ones lesson four is built on. Ask what approach a programme uses. If the answer is a brand name, ask who evaluated it, because independent evaluation of branded programmes has been questioned in the literature and that is a fair question to put.

If the shouting sits on top of low mood, anxiety, or something you are drinking or taking to get through the evenings, then that is the thing to treat, and treating it does more for your children than any technique in this course.

And if what is happening at home is that another adult is frightening or controlling you, that is a different problem with a different door, and there is a course called When home is not safe that will point you to it.
