What to say when somebody quotes it at you

You do not need to win this argument, and trying to will cost you more than it returns.

You are allowed to say that scholars have read that report in more than one way, that you are asking somebody about it, and that in the meantime you are going with the material on mercy, which nobody disputes. That is an honest position and it is a hard one to attack.

What you should not do is get pulled into running a scriptural debate in your mother in law's kitchen with your children in the room. That conversation has never once ended well, and the children are watching it rather than listening to it.
