Harsh verbal discipline means using words to cause a child emotional pain or discomfort in order to control what they do. It runs from raised voice at one end, through the sarcastic version, to name calling and swearing at the far end.

Most parents who shout live at the near end of that range and are horrified by the far end. That is a real distinction and it is worth keeping. It is also worth knowing that the range is a range, and that a bad enough week moves people along it.
