Which one is which
Answer it in your head first, then look.
Two people say almost the same thing afterwards. One says, I should not have done that, and I am sorry. The other says, I am the sort of person who does that. Which one is more likely to be back inside the loop tonight, and why?
The second one. The first sentence is about an act, so it has somewhere to go, which is repair, and then the day continues. The second is about a self, so there is nowhere for it to go and the only available move is to get away from the feeling. The fastest exit from that feeling is the behaviour itself, which is why shame is fuel rather than a brake.
