Before you read on

If you are in danger right now, stop reading. Get to a room you can leave, or to a neighbour, or call your local emergency number. Read this later. Also: this browser keeps a history, and the device you are holding may be checked. If that is a risk, use a private window, or a phone that is not yours, or a computer at a library or a clinic, and clear the history when you finish. Nothing here is scored, stored as a verdict, or shown to anyone.

Lesson 4 of 6

What gets said to you

Be patient. This is your test. Paradise is under his feet, or some rearrangement of a phrase that was never about this. Do not air the family's business. Think of the children. Every marriage is hard. Pray more.

Some of the people who say these things love you. That is what makes them so heavy. They are not trying to keep you in danger, they are trying to hold a family together, and they have no idea what they are holding it together around.

This lesson is about what those sentences actually rest on, which turns out to be very little.
