Background: Treating depression and anxiety in adolescents can be challenging due to interindividual variability in medication response. With current trial-and-error prescribing practices, adolescents may undergo multiple medication changes over months or years before an effective and tolerated drug and dose are identified. Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing can identify interindividual differences in drug metabolism, and evidence supporting PGx-guided prescribing in adults with mental disorders is growing. However, its impact on pediatric psychotropic prescribing remains underexplored. Methods: This is a protocol for a parallel-arm, multicentre, randomized controlled trial. Canadian adolescents aged 12-17 years who are initiating or switching a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) for depression and/or an anxiety disorder under physician care are eligible. A total of 452 participant…

Anxiety in youth with and without specific learning disorders: exploring the relationships with inhibitory control, perfectionism, and self-conscious emotions.
Introduction: Since early research on Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), their relationship with emotional issues have been recognized, although emotional factors have received less attention compared to the cognitive processes related with academic achievement.
Methods: This study aimed to investigate mechanisms that may increase vulnerability to generalized and social anxiety in youth with SLD, compared to their non-diagnosed peers. We examined cognitive factors (inhibitory control), personality traits (self-oriented, socially prescribed perfectionism), and self-conscious emotions (shame, guilt). The sample included 134 individuals aged 10 to 16, divided into two groups: 67 with SLD and 67 without diagnoses, matched by age, sex, and IQ. Participants completed questionnaires on anxiety, perfectionism, and selfconscious emotions, alongside an inhibitory control task.
Results: Findings re…

Psychosocial predictors of the innate immune response to influenza vaccination.
Experimental activation of the innate immune system has contributed significantly to both our understanding of how psychological factors influence immune function as well as how immune activity influences the brain and behavior. The annual influenza vaccine can be used to interrogate the effects of mild immune stimulation on day-to-day changes in psychological processes in human subjects that range across the lifespan and in both clinical and non-clinical populations. Yet, the immune response to the influenza vaccine in the days immediately following its administration are not well characterized. The present study describes changes in inflammatory and antiviral gene expression within circulating immune cells, plasma cytokines, and C-reactive protein (CRP) following receipt of the flu vaccine, and further reports the association between several common behavioral health factors and the acu…

Do Maternal Self-Criticism and Symptoms of Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Mediate the Effect of History of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms on Mother-Infant Bonding? Parallel-Serial Mediation Models.
Introduction: History of depression symptoms, including before and during pregnancy, has been identified as an important risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms. This condition has also been associated with diverse implications, namely, on the quality of mother-infant bonding. Moreover, the role of self-criticism on PPD has been recently found in several studies. However, the link between these factors has not been explored yet. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms in postpartum has been less studied.
Methods: This study analyzed whether the history of depression symptoms predicted mother-infant bonding, via self-criticism and PPD symptoms. The same model was repeated with a history of anxiety and postpartum anxiety symptoms. A total of 550 mothers of infants <24 months old participated in this cross-sectional study and answered an online survey.
Results: Through a parallel-serial …
