Psychophysiological biomarkers of workplace stressors.

Unlabelled: Workplace stressors are associated with greater coronary heart disease risk, although there is debate over the psychophysiological consequences of work stress. This study builds on recent reviews and examines the literature linking work stress with sympatho-adrenal biomarkers (plasma catecholamines and heart rate variability) and HPA axis biomarkers - the post-morning profile of cortisol. Methods derived from nonlinear dynamics for analysing heart rate variability.

Methods from nonlinear dynamics (NLD) have shown new insights into heart rate (HR) variability changes under various physiological and pathological conditions, providing additional prognostic information and complementing traditional time- and frequency-domain analyses. In this review, some of the most prominent indices of nonlinear and fractal dynamics are summarized and their algorithmic implementations and applications in clinical trials are discussed. Several of those indices have been proven to be of diagnostic relevance or have contributed to risk stratification. In particular, techniques based on mono- and multifractal analyses and symbolic dynamics have been successfully applied to clinical studies. When our hearts beat together: Cardiac synchrony as an entry point to understand dyadic co-regulation in couples.

The degree to which romantic partners' autonomic responses are coordinated, represented by their pattern of physiological synchrony, seems to capture important aspects of the reciprocal influence and co-regulation between spouses. Brain-gut interactions in inflammatory bowel disease.

Psycho-neuro-endocrine-immune modulation through the brain-gut axis likely has a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Heart rate variability in risk stratification of cardiac patients.

Heart rate (HR) variability has been extensively studied in cardiac patients, especially in patients surviving an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and also in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) or left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Longitudinal evidence for unfavorable effects of antidepressants on heart rate variability.

Chronic intermittent low-level transcutaneous electrical stimulation of auricular branch of vagus nerve improves left ventricular remodeling in conscious dogs with healed myocardial infarction.

Alteration of cardiac autonomic functions in patients with major depression: a study using heart rate variability measures.

Background: Depression is associated with greater cardiac morbidity and mortality. One of the contributory factors for this may be altered cardiac autonomic activity in depression. Stress and Health: A Review of Psychobiological Processes.

The cumulative science linking stress to negative health outcomes is vast. Stress can affect health directly, through autonomic and neuroendocrine responses, but also indirectly, through changes in health behaviors. Frequency analysis of the electrocardiographic RR interval is a common method of quantifying autonomic outflow by measuring the beat-to-beat modulation of the heart (heart rate variability; HRV). This review identifies a series of problems with the methods of doing so-the interpretation of low-frequency spectral power, the multiple use of equivalent normalized low frequency (LFnu), high frequency (HFnu) and ratio (LF/HF) terms, and the lack of control over extraneous variables, and reviews research in the calendar year 2012 to determine their prevalence and severity. Results support the mathematical equivalency of ratio units across studies, a reliance on those variables to explain autonomic outflow, and insufficient control of critical experimental variables. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is difficult to treat and current PTSD treatments are not effective for all people. Despite limited evidence for its efficacy, some clinicians have implemented biofeedback for PTSD treatment. The autonomic phenotype of rumination.

Recent studies suggest that ruminative thoughts may be mediators of the prolonged physiological effects of stress. We hypothesized that autonomic dysregulation plays a role in the relation between rumination and health. Rumination was induced by an anger-recall task in 45 healthy subjects. Heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and baroreflex effectiveness index (BEI) change scores were evaluated to obtain the autonomic phenotype of rumination. Personality traits and endothelial activation were examined for their relation to autonomic responses during rumination. Restoration of vagal tone: a possible mechanism for functional abdominal pain.

Functional abdominal pain (FAP) causes disruption of daily activities/missed school days, over utilization of healthcare, unnecessary surgeries, and anxiety in 10-15% of children. Its etiology is not clearly understood, however the success of several clinical protocols suggests that autonomic dysregulation is a factor. In this study autonomic activity, including heart rate variability (HRV), was compared between children with FAP and a comparison group. Twenty children with FAP and 10 children without FAP between the ages of 5 and 17 years old were compared on autonomic regulation using an ambulatory system at baseline and 8 weeks later. Children with FAP participated in 6 sessions of HRV biofeedback aimed at normalizing autonomic balance. Perceptual insensitivity to the modulation of interoceptive signals in depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

This study employed a series of heartbeat perception tasks to assess the hypothesis that cardiac interoceptive processing in individuals with depression/anxiety (N = 221), and substance use disorders (N = 136) is less flexible than that of healthy individuals (N = 53) in the context of physiological perturbation. Cardiac interoception was assessed via heartbeat tapping when: (1) guessing was allowed; (2) guessing was not allowed; and (3) experiencing an interoceptive perturbation (inspiratory breath hold) expected to amplify cardiac sensation. Healthy participants showed performance improvements across the three conditions, whereas those with depression/anxiety and/or substance use disorder showed minimal improvement. Clinically Asymptomatic Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Infants with Single-Ventricle Physiology.

Objectives: To assess clinically asymptomatic infants with single-ventricle physiology (SVP) for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in the supine and car seat positions using polysomnography. Polysomnography results also were compared with results of a standard Car Seat Challenge to measure the dependability of the standard Car Seat Challenge. Study design: This was an observational study of 15 infants with SVP. Polysomnography data included Obstructive Index, Central Index, Arousal Index, Apnea Hypopnea Index, and sleep efficiency.
