Role of IGF-1 in neuroinflammation and cognition deficits induced by sleep deprivation.
Sleep deprivation negatively influences cognition, however, the regulatory mechanisms to counteract this effect have not been identified. IGF-1 has been shown to be anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective in CNS injury models. In this study, we determined the impact of IGF-1 on brain injury and inflammation while modeling sleep deprivation. We found that IGF-1 was downregulated in human peripheral blood and in mice subjected to sleep deprivation for 5 days, with reduced activation of the downstream PI3K/AKT/GSK-3β pathway in mice brains. In addition, we found reduced levels of the anti-apoptosis enzyme Bcl-2 and increased levels of pro-apoptosis enzyme Caspase-9 expression, together with increased pro-inflammatory factors. Depression and anxiety, as the two most prevalent psychiatric disorders, pose a huge challenge to the quality of life of the elderly. Using a sample of 7,721 elderly from the latest Chinese Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS), the present study intended to explore the association between mental health and socioeconomic status, physical functional disability, and cognitive impairment among Chinese elderly by adopting multivariate logistic regression analyses. The results revealed that depression, anxiety, and their comorbidity are significantly higher in the elderly with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability, cognitive impairment, financial strain, and living alone. Activation of the Hippocampal LXRβ Improves Sleep-Deprived Cognitive Impairment by Inhibiting Neuroinflammation.

Volunteering Served as a Transitional Role That Enhances the Well-Being and Cognitive Health Among Older Adults With Cognitive Impairments.
Objectives: We examined whether volunteering among older adults with cognitive impairments serves as a transitional role that can enhance these older persons' well-being and cognitive health.
Methods: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we selected older adults with cognitive impairments (N = 472) and developed linear mixed models to assess associations between volunteering and health outcomes.
Results: Volunteers in our sample were mostly females, non-Hispanic whites, those with higher income, and those with a high-school diploma. Volunteering was associated with higher levels of self-rated health, and consistent participation in volunteer work was related to stronger feelings of purpose in life. Cognitive health slightly improved over time only among those who volunteered.

Introduction: Cognitive impairment is related to an increase in cardiovascular risk (CVR) in the general population. However, in severe mental disorder (SMD), the evidence is less consistent. Few studies have evaluated the relationship between cognition and vascular burden in SMD. Memory consolidation is thought to depend on the reactivation of waking hippocampal firing patterns during sleep. Following goal learning, the reactivation of place cell firing can represent goals and predicts subsequent memory recall. However, it is unclear whether reactivation promotes the recall of the reactivated memories only or triggers wider reorganization. We trained animals to locate goals at fixed locations in two different environments. We recently hypothesised that increased spontaneous mind wandering (MW-S) reflects a core process underlying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Previous studies show that individuals with ADHD and neurotypical individuals with increased MW-S display similar cognitive-performance and electrophysiological (EEG) impairments in attentional processes. However, the cognitive-EEG markers associated with increased MW-S in ADHD remain poorly understood. Ellagic acid (EA) is a phenolic phytoconstituent extracted from grains and fruits that has potent neuroprotective properties. This research aimed to study the alleviative effect and mechanism of EA on memory impairment and anxiety caused by sleep deprivation (SD). EA ameliorated behavioral abnormalities in SD mice, associated with increased dendritic spine density, and reduced shrinkage and loss of hippocampal neurons.
