Objectives: Prior studies have suggested a relationship between dehydration and poor cognitive performance. The present study examined the relationships among hydration status, declarative memory and working memory skills, and blood pressure in a sample of older community dwelling females.
Design: Data was analyzed from a larger study; relationships among hydration status, blood pressure, and cognitive measures were assessed with correlation and meditational analyses.
Setting: Laboratory.
Participants: 21 postmenopausal women (mean age 60.3, SD 8.03).
Measures: Hydration status was measured using bioelectrical impedance, baseline blood pressure was assessed using a Colin Pressmate, and cognition was examined using the Auditory Verbal Learning Test and Auditory Consonant Trigrams.

Memory dysfunction, psychomotor slowing, and decreased executive function predict mortality in patients with heart failure and low ejection fraction.
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether dysfunction of specific cognitive abilities is a predictor of impending mortality in adults with systolic heart failure (HF).
Methods: A total of 166 stable outpatients with HF completed cognitive function evaluation in language, working memory, memory, visuospatial ability, psychomotor speed, and executive function using a neuropsychological test battery. Adaptive training leads to sustained enhancement of poor working memory in children.
Working memory plays a crucial role in supporting learning, with poor progress in reading and mathematics characterizing children with low memory skills. This study investigated whether these problems can be overcome by a training program designed to boost working memory. Children with low working memory skills were assessed on measures of working memory, IQ and academic attainment before and after training on either adaptive or non-adaptive versions of the program. Adaptive training that taxed working memory to its limits was associated with substantial and sustained gains in working memory, with age-appropriate levels achieved by the majority of children. Acute psychological stress reduces working memory-related activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
Background: Acute psychological stress impairs higher-order cognitive function such as working memory (WM). Modifiers of cognitive function and brain structure in middle-aged and elderly individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Cognitive deficits and hippocampal atrophy, features that are shared with aging and dementia, have been described in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM is associated with obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical (HPA) axis abnormalities and inflammation, all of which have been shown to negatively impact the brain. However, since most reports in T2DM focused on glycemic control, the relative contribution of these modifying factors to the impairments observed in T2DM remains unclear. Health behaviors from early to late midlife as predictors of cognitive function: The Whitehall II study.
The authors examined associations of health behaviors over a 17-year period, separately and in combination, with cognition in late midlife in 5,123 men and women from the Whitehall II study (United Kingdom). Health behaviors were assessed in early midlife (mean age = 44 years; phase 1, 1985-1988), in midlife (mean age = 56 years; phase 5, 1997-1999), and in late midlife (mean age = 61 years; phase 7, 2002-2004). A score of the number of unhealthy behaviors (smoking, alcohol abstinence, low physical activity, and low fruit and vegetable consumption) was defined as ranging from 0 to 4. Teenage drinking, alcohol availability and pricing: a cross-sectional study of risk and protective factors for alcohol-related harms in school children.
Background: There is a lack of empirical analyses examining how alcohol consumption patterns in children relate to harms. Such intelligence is required to inform parents, children and policy relating to the provision and use of alcohol during childhood. Updating the contents of working memory in depression: interference from irrelevant negative material.
This study was designed to assess the effects of irrelevant emotional material on the ability to update the contents of working memory in depression. For each trial, participants were required to memorize 2 lists of emotional words and subsequently to ignore 1 of the lists. The impact of irrelevant emotional material on the ability to update the contents of working memory was indexed by response latencies on a recognition task in which the participants decided whether or not a probe was a member of the relevant list. Non-epileptic seizures and other functional neurological symptoms: predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors.
This naturalistic study describes potential etiological factors in outpatients with functional neurological symptoms recorded during a screening interview with a single psychotherapist in 59 consecutive patients. The most commonly identified predisposing/precipitating factors were trauma (78.0%), family dysfunction (62.7%), and bereavement (62.7%). Family dysfunction (54.2%) and affective disorder (42%) were the commonest perpetuating factors. Trauma was more common in non-epileptic seizures; health anxiety, in men; family problems, in women. This study demonstrates the heterogeneity of this patient population. Further research is indicated to explore differences in predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors in different patient groups with functional symptoms.

Reduced autobiographical memory specificity and rumination in predicting the course of depression.
Reduced autobiographical memory (AM) specificity is a known vulnerability factor for depression. AM specificity was investigated as a predictor of depression with the Autobiographical Memory Test (J. M. G. Williams & K. Broadbent, 1986). When baseline depression scores were partialed, reduced AM specificity to negative cue words predicted higher levels of depression at 7-month follow-up. Once rumination was taken into account by means of the Rumination on Sadness Scale (M. Conway, P. A. R. Csank, S. L. Holm, & C. K. Blake, 2000), AM specificity no longer predicted depression, suggesting that the predictive value of AM specificity observed in previous studies might be--at least partly--explained as an effect of rumination. Further mediation analyses indeed revealed support for rumination as a mediator of the relation between reduced AM specificity and poor outcome of depression.

Cue-induced cocaine seeking and relapse are reduced by disruption of drug memory reconsolidation.
Long-lasting vulnerability to drug cue-induced relapse to a drug-taking habit is a major challenge to the treatment of drug addiction. Here we show that blockade of drug memory reconsolidation, through infusion of Zif268 antisense oligodeoxynucleotides into the basolateral amygdala shortly before reexposure to a cocaine-associated stimulus but not simply to the training context, severely impaired subsequently cue-maintained cocaine seeking under a second-order schedule of reinforcement and abolished cue-induced reinstatement of and relapse to cocaine seeking. This reduction in relapse after disrupted memory reconsolidation was not only seen after several hundred pairings of the stimulus with self-administered cocaine, but older, as well as recent, memories were also disrupted. Developmental exposure of rats to chlorpyrifos leads to behavioral alterations in adulthood, involving serotonergic mechanisms and resembling animal models of depression.
Developmental exposure to chlorpyrifos (CPF) causes persistent changes in serotonergic (5HT) systems. We administered 1 mg/kg/day CPF to rats on postnatal days 1-4, a regimen below the threshold for systemic toxicity. When tested in adulthood, CPF-exposed animals showed abnormalities in behavioral tests that involve 5HT mechanisms. In the elevated plus maze, males treated with CPF spent more time in the open arms, an effect seen with 5HT deficiencies in animal models of depression. Similarly, in an anhedonia test, the CPF-exposed group showed a decreased preference for chocolate milk versus water. Developmental CPF exposure also has lasting effects on cognitive function. Reduced specificity of autobiographical memory: a mediator between rumination and ineffective social problem-solving in major depression?
Background: Depressed individuals display a deficit in effectively solving social problem situations (e.g., []). Cognitive impairment in Parkinson disease: impact on quality of life, disability, and caregiver burden.
Aim: To compare quality of life, level of disability, and caregiver burden in 3 groups of people with Parkinson disease (PD): those with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI), those with dementia (PDD), and those with no cognitive impairment (PD-NC).

Late-life social activity and cognitive decline in old age.
We examined the association of social activity with cognitive decline in 1138 persons without dementia at baseline with a mean age of 79.6 (SD = 7.5) who were followed for up to 12 years (mean = 5.2; SD = 2.8). Using mixed models adjusted for age, sex, education, race, social network size, depression, chronic conditions, disability, neuroticism, extraversion, cognitive activity, and physical activity, more social activity was associated with less cognitive decline during average follow-up of 5.2 years (SD = 2.7). A one point increase in social activity score (range = 1-4.2; mean = 2.6; SD = 0.6) was associated with a 47% decrease in the rate of decline in global cognitive function (p < .001). The association between lifetime marital histories and later-life cognitive function: evidence from the United States and China.
Objectives: We adopted a life course perspective to characterize lifetime marital history typologies and examined their associations with later-life cognitive function in two nationally representative cohorts of adults aged 65+ in the United States and China. We also explored whether the associations vary by gender.
Methods: We used data from the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS-HCAP) (n = 3,318) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS-HCAP) (n = 5,766).
