Prophet, when any of you intend to divorce women, do so at a time when their prescribed waiting period can properly start, and calculate the period carefully: be mindful of God, your Lord. Do not drive them out of their homes––nor should they themselves leave––unless they commit a flagrant indecency. These are the limits set by God–– whoever oversteps God’s limits wrongs his own soul––for you cannot know what new situation God may perhaps bring about
Believers, you have no right to expect a waiting period when you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them: make provision for them and release them in an honourable way
Qur'ān 2:231English sense: divorce | Arabic sense:
When you divorce women and they have reached their set time, then either keep or release them in a fair manner. Do not hold on to them with intent to harm them and commit aggression: anyone who does this wrongs himself. Do not make a mockery of God’s revelations; remember the favour He blessed you with, and the Scripture and wisdom He sent to teach you. Be mindful of God and know that He has full knowledge of everything
Qur'ān 2:232Arabic sense: طلقتم | English sense: divorce
When you divorce women and they have reached their set time, do not prevent them from remarrying their husbands if they both agree to do so in a fair manner. Let those of you who believe in God and the Last Day take this to heart: that is more wholesome and purer for you. God knows and you do not
Qur'ān 2:236English sense: divorce | Arabic sense:
You will not be blamed if you divorce women when you have not yet consummated the marriage or fixed a bride-gift for them, but make fair provision for them, the rich according to his means and the poor according to his- this is a duty for those who do good
Qur'ān 2:237Arabic sense: طلقتم | English sense: divorce
If you divorce wives before consummating the marriage but after fixing a bride-gift for them, then give them half of what you had previously fixed, unless they waive [their right], or unless the one who holds the marriage tie waives [his right]. Waiving [your right] is nearer to godliness, so do not forget to be generous towards one another: God sees what you do

Series A, Biological sciences and medical sciences7 citations Intrinsic association of widowhood with mortality in community-dwelling older women and men: findings from a prospective propensity-matched population study.
Objectives: Widowhood is associated with increased mortality. However, to what extent this association is independent of other risk factors remains unclear. In the current study, we used propensity score matching to design a study to examine the independent association of widowhood with outcomes in a balanced cohort of older adults in the United States.
Methods: We used public-use copies of the Cardiovascular Health Study data obtained from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Of the 5,795 community-dwelling older men and women aged 65 years and older in Cardiovascular Health Study, 3,820 were married and 1,436 were widows or widowers. Propensity scores for widowhood, estimated for each of the 5,256 participants, were used to assemble a cohort of 819 pairs of widowed and married participants who were balanced on 74 baseline characteristics. The 1,638 matched participants had a …

The Relationship Between Contact and Child Adjustment in High Conflict Cases after Divorce or Separation.
Background: The study explored the relationship between contact and child adjustment where parents are in legal dispute over contact following divorce.
Method: The sample consisted of 156, 129 and 108 parents at three different time points. Resident and contact parents reported on child and parent wellbeing, contact, decision-making and concerns about their former partner's parenting.
Results: Children, particularly boys, had above average behaviour problems. Parent wellbeing and concerns about their ex-partner's parenting were associated with child adjustment. Contact and child adjustment were not related.
Conclusions: Parenting education and therapeutic interventions are required to help parents focus on their children's needs.

Perceived spousal similarity in outlook on life: implications for later-life well-being.
Objectives: People tend to choose marital partners who are similar to themselves, and spouses become increasingly similar in some respects due to shared life experiences. However, it is unknown whether spousal similarity contributes to the health of married people in later life. This study investigates whether and how spousal similarity in outlook on life is linked to later-life well-being.
Methods: We used data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, a long-running prospective study following graduates from Wisconsin high schools in 1957 and their selected siblings. We measured perceived spousal similarity in outlook on life at both the individual (i.e., self-evaluation) and couple (i.e., concordance/discordance in evaluations between spouses) levels when participants were, 65 years old, on average. Later-life well-being was measured by self-rated general health, functional limitations, …

Marital stability, satisfaction and well-being in old age: variability and continuity in long-term continuously married older persons.
Objectives: Recent research shows that the well-documented positive effects of marital stability on well-being and health outcomes are conditional upon the quality of marriage. To date, few studies have explored the relationship between marital satisfaction, well-being and health among very long-term married individuals. This study aims at identifying groups of long-term married persons with respect to marital satisfaction and comparing them longitudinally concerning their well-being outcomes, marital stressors, personality and socio-demographic variables.
Method: Data are derived from a survey (data collection 2012 and 2014) with 374 continuously married individuals at wave 1 (mean age: 74.2 years, length of marriage: 49.2 years) and 252 at wave 2. Cluster analyses were performed comparing the clusters with regard to various well-being outcomes. The predictive power of cluster affiliati…

Who Says I Do: The Changing Context of Marriage and Health and Quality of Life for LGBT Older Adults.
Purpose of the study: Until recently, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adults were excluded from full participation in civil marriage. The purpose of this study is to examine how legal marriage and relationship status are associated with health-promoting and at-risk factors, health, and quality of life of LGBT adults aged 50 and older.
Design and methods: We utilized weighted survey data from Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, and Sexuality/Gender Study (NHAS) participants who resided in states with legalized same-sex marriage in 2014 (N = 1,821). Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to examine differences by relationship status (legally married, unmarried partnered, single) in economic and social resources; LGBT contextual and identity factors; health; and quality of life.
Results: We found 24% were legally married, and 26% unmarried partnered; one-half wer…

Are Pregnancy Intentions Associated with Transitions Into and Out of Marriage?
Context: In addition to having associations with health outcomes, pregnancy intentions may be associated with social outcomes, including marital transitions.
Methods: Linked data from the 2004-2008 Oklahoma Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System and The Oklahoma Toddler Survey for 2006-2010 on 3,617 women who were married and 2,123 who were unmarried at conception were used to examine the relationship between pregnancy intention status (intended, mistimed by less than two years, mistimed by two or more years, or unwanted) and marital formation or dissolution by the time of the birth and two years later. Logistic regression analyses were conducted, and propensity score methods were used to adjust for confounding characteristics.
Results: Intention status was associated with marital transition two years after the birth, but not between conception and birth. In adjusted models, among w…

Objective: To examine the effects of marital status and marital satisfaction on survival after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
Methods: Participants were 225 people who had CABG between 1987 and 1990. Marital status at the time of surgery and marital satisfaction 1 year after surgery were used to predict survival 15 years after surgery.
Results: Married people were 2.5 times (p < .001) more likely to be alive 15 years after CABG than those who were not married. This finding was true for men and women, although the result for women was marginally significant adjusting for age. Those in high-satisfaction marriages were 3.2 times (p < .003) more likely to be alive 15 years after CABG compared with those reporting low marital satisfaction. Highly satisfied men were 2.7 times (p < .03) and highly satisfied women were 3.9 times (p < .15) more likely to be alive adjusting for age. Altho…

Is there something unique about marriage? The relative impact of marital status, relationship quality, and network social support on ambulatory blood pressure and mental health.
Background: Having close social relationships and being married specifically have been reliably associated with health benefits including lower morbidity and mortality.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of marital status, relationship quality, and network support on measures of psychological and cardiovascular health.
Method: We examined ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) among 204 married and 99 single males and females (N = 303).
Results: We found that both marital status and marital quality were important. Married individuals had greater satisfaction with life (SWL) and blood pressure dipping than single individuals. High marital quality was associated with lower ABP, lower stress, less depression, and higher SWL. Importantly, contrasting those who are unmarried with those in low-quality marriages, we find that single individuals had lower ABP-suggesting tha…

Sexuality and quality of life.
The purpose of this research was to explore the relationships between sexual activity and intimacy and quality of life (QOL) of older adults. The authors' research question was "To what extent do age, gender, marital status, health status, education, satisfaction with personal relationships, sexual activity, and satisfaction with intimacy explain older adults' ratings of QOL?" A secondary analysis was conducted using results from a cross-sectional survey. Data were available from a convenience sample of 426 individuals living in British Columbia, Canada, who volunteered to complete the questionnaire. Instruments included the WHOQOL-100, WHOQOL-OLD, and a demographic data sheet. It was found that the strongest contributors to the variance of overall QOL were satisfaction with personal relationships, followed by health status andsexual activity. Age, gender, marital status, and education w…

Social isolation and depression as risk factors for weight loss of 5kg or more among older Korean adults.
Given a well-known overlapping prevalence of social isolation with loneliness and depression among older adults, this study aimed to contextually investigate the relationship of these constructs with weight loss of more than 5kg in a year, with a special focus on the intersection of living alone and marital dissolution as key dimensions of isolation. The data were obtained from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) from 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018, with an adult sample of those aged 65 and older (n = 5,481). The study evaluated several critical dimensions of social isolation: living alone, transition to living alone, infrequent social contact with children or friends, and infrequent social participation. These dimensions were examined individually and as a composite scale, along with loneliness and depressive symptoms, to determine their association with weight …

Marital dissolutions and changes in mental health: Evidence from rural Malawi.
Background: Advancing efforts to unpack the complex relationship between marital dissolutions and health outcomes increasingly requires assessing the marital histories and health of individuals who have lived long enough to experience divorce or widowhood ‒ or even multiples of each ‒ and measurable changes in health.
Objective: To explore this line of inquiry, we chose a sample from rural Malawi where a high prevalence of marital dissolutions and remarrying exists, as an ideal theoretical foil to the predominant literature found in high-income countries (HICs). We examine if changes in having experienced a marital dissolution, one's total number of dissolutions, and the percentage of one's life spent outside of marriage since first becoming married are associated with changes in mental health.

Reconsidering the "Good Divorce"
This study attempted to assess the notion that a "good divorce" protects children from the potential negative consequences of marital dissolution. A cluster analysis of data on postdivorce parenting from 944 families resulted in three groups: cooperative coparenting, parallel parenting, and single parenting. Children in the cooperative coparenting (good divorce) cluster had the smallest number of behavior problems and the closest ties to their fathers. Nevertheless, children in this cluster did not score significantly better than other children on 10 additional outcomes. These findings provide only modest support for the good divorce hypothesis.

Impact of child marriage on adolescents' health and socioeconomic development: an essay on Ethiopian perspective.
Early marriage is a worldwide health concern that is prevalent in Southern Asia, South America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Early marriage has been associated with numerous adverse outcomes, including an increased risk of unintended pregnancy, poor economic status, discontinuation of education, sexually transmitted infections, higher divorce rates, adverse pregnancy outcomes, maternal and child mortality, and various negative physical and social consequences for young women and their children. Child marriage in Ethiopia is one of the highest rates in the world. Although the country has shown an overall reduction in the prevalence of child marriage, the problem is still striking and demands the attention of all stakeholders who are working on children's and adolescents' health and well-being. The most challenging side of early marriage in Ethiopia is that it is linked with a diverse and highl…

Adolescent-onset depression is associated with altered social functioning into middle adulthood.
Depression during sensitive periods of social development may have consequences that extend well beyond mental health, and far into adulthood. This study compared the social functioning of adults with adolescent-onset depression (ages 10-20) to those with adult-onset depression (ages 21+). Participants were 3,360 adults (67.2% female; ages 42 ± 15) who had experienced major depression. Adult functional outcomes were marital status, divorce, number of children, years of education, employment status, household income, dependency on welfare, and obesity. Participants with depression during adolescence were less likely to get married, have children, and more likely to have lower household incomes. Depression during adolescence may be associated with broader functional outcomes that impact individuals and society, and may be mitigated through intervention and effective policy.

A wide range of literature connects sex ratio and mating behaviours in non-human animals. However, research examining sex ratio and human mating is limited in scope. Prior work has examined the relationship between sex ratio and desire for short-term, uncommitted mating as well as outcomes such as marriage and divorce rates. Less empirical attention has been directed towards the relationship between sex ratio and mate preferences, despite the importance of mate preferences in the human mating literature. To address this gap, we examined sex ratio's relationship to the variation in preferences for attractiveness, resources, kindness, intelligence and health in a long-term mate across 45 countries (n = 14 487). We predicted that mate preferences would vary according to relative power of choice on the mating market, with increased power derived from having relatively few competitors and num…

Exploration of a Marital Typology: Implications for Marital Functioning in a Multi-Ethnic Sample.
Marital conflict is associated with multiple negative outcomes for couples, including marital dissatisfaction and divorce. Little research, however, has examined conflict in Hispanic/Latino couples or its association with marital satisfaction, which creates an unfortunate knowledge gap for clinicians working with diverse client groups. The present study sought to examine both marital conflict and satisfaction using a sample of 231 European American (EA; n = 108) and Hispanic/Latino (H/L; n = 123) couples. Through observational coding, couples were placed into four groups based on their type of conflict management strategies: Harmonious, Withdrawn, Conflictual-Expressive, or Conflictual-Hostile. For both ethnic groups, couples in the Harmonious group were nondistressed and couples in the Conflictual-Hostile group were in the distressed range of marital satisfaction. Cross-ethnic differenc…

Employment stability and mental health in Spain: towards understanding the influence of gender and partner/marital status.
Background: The growing demand for labour flexibility has resulted in decreasing employment stability that could be associated with poor mental health status. Few studies have analysed the whole of the work force in considering this association since research on flexible forms of employment traditionally analyses employed and unemployed people separately. The gender division of work, and family characteristics related to employment situation, could modify its association with mental wellbeing. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between a continuum of employment stability and mental health taking into account gender and partner/marital status.
Methods: We selected 6859 men and 5106 women currently salaried or unemployed from the 2006 Spanish National Health Survey. Employment stability was measured through a continuum from the highest stability among employed to lo…

Marital status as a predictor of diurnal salivary cortisol levels and slopes in a community sample of healthy adults.
Married people tend to be healthier than both the previously (bereaved, divorced, and separated) and never married, but the mechanisms through which this occurs remain unclear. To this end, research has increasingly focused on how psychological stress experienced by unmarried versus married individuals may differentially impact physiological systems related to health. One key system that is modulated by stress is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, of which cortisol is a key hormonal product. Increased cortisol production and disruption of cortisol's daily rhythm have been linked to poorer health outcomes. This study examined the association between current marital status and these two indices of cortisol in a community sample of 572 healthy men and women aged 21-55. It also tested whether marriage buffers against the effect of stress (perceived stress by marital status intera…

Marital status, marital quality, and heart rate variability in the MIDUS cohort.
Previous research has shown marital status and marital quality are consistent predictors of health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease and mortality.
