(O ye who believe! Be ye staunch in justice) [4:135]. Asbat related that al-Suddi said: This was revealed about the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace. A poor man and a rich man went to him to settle a dispute. He was inclined to judge in favour of the poor man because he thought that a poor man cannot wrong a rich person. But Allah, exalted is He, wanted to establish justice regarding the poor and rich alike. He said: (O ye who believe! Be ye staunch in justice) up to His words (whether (the case be of) a rich man or a poor man, for Allah is nearer unto both (than ye are)).

‘O David! We have indeed made you a vicegerent on the earth managing the affairs of people; so judge justly between people and do not follow desire that is the desires of the soul that it then lead you astray from the way of God that is to say from the proofs that indicate the truth of His Oneness. Truly those who go astray from the way of God in other words from belief in God — for them there will be a severe chastisement because of their forgetting the Day of Reckoning’ as a result of their having neglected faith. For had they been certain of the truth of the Day of Reckoning they would have first been believers in this world.

O you who believe be upright in justice; witnesses of the truth for God even though it the witnessing be against yourselves so be witness against them your selves by affirming the truth and not concealing it; or against parents and kinsmen whether the person witnessed against be rich or poor; God is closer to the two than you and He has better knowledge of what is good for them. So do not follow any whim in your testimonies by being partial to the rich one seeking his pleasure or by being partial to the poor one out of compassion for him lest you swerve so that you do not incline away from the truth for if you twist a variant reading for talwūw has talū if you distort your testimony or refrain from giving it surely God is ever aware of what you do and will requite you accordingly.

O Dawud! Verily, We have placed you as a successor on the earth; so judge you between men in truth (and justice) and follow not your desire – for it will mislead you from the path of Allah. Verily, those who wander astray from the path of Allah (shall) have a severe torment, because they forgot the Day of Reckoni (26) Advice to Rulers and Leaders This is advice from Allah, may He be exalted, to those who are in positions of authority. The First Surah in which a Prostration is revealed Al-Bukhari recorded that 'Abdullah [bin Mas'ud] said, "Surat An-Najm was the first Surah in which a prostration was revealed. The Prophet ﷺ (recited it in Makkah) and prostrated. Those who were with him did the same, except an old man who took a handful of soil and prostrated on it. Later on, I saw him killed as a disbeliever; he was Umayyah bin Khalaf." Al-Bukhari recorded this Hadith in several places of his Sahih, as did Muslim, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i, using various chains of narration through Abu Ishaq from 'Abdullah. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. (1. There he found a dead lamb with very short ears. He took hold of his ear and said:Who amongst you would like to have this for a dirham? They said: We do not like to have it even for less than that as it is of no use to us. He said: Do you wish to have it (free of any cost)? They said: By Allah, even if it were alive (we would not have liked to possess that), for there is defect in it as its ear is very short; now it is dead also. Hydration, mood, and cognition in primary school aged children in the United Kingdom.

Effective cognition is fundamental to academic attainment and has been linked to multiple dietary behaviours, including adequate hydration. This study aimed to evaluate whether the hydration status of primary school children (9-10y) across the school day was associated with cognition and mood. Food and fluid intake were tracked using photographic dietary records. Urine/serum osmolality (Uosm/Sosm), urine specific gravity (USG) and self-reported urine colour (Ucol) were assessed at first void (Uosm only) or the start (09:00) and end (16:00-16:30) of the school day. Children's self-reported mood and appetite were obtained via Visual Analogue Scales (VAS at 09:00, 10:30, 13:30 and 16:00). Children completed cognitive assessments using the Computerised Mental Performance Assessment System (15:30-16:00). T-tests indicated that (a) children consumed most fluid at mealtimes (P < 0.001), and (b)

Facilitators and barriers to engaging in expressive writing among health and social care professionals.

Healthcare workers in the UK report high levels of burnout and poor wellbeing, and interventions are urgently needed to address this issue. Expressive writing, whereby individuals write about emotionally laden thoughts or experiences, is an effective intervention for reducing stress and enhancing wellbeing, and is a potential candidate for use with healthcare workers. However, it is crucial that the preferences of healthcare workers are taken into account in the design of future trials in this area, and that perceived barriers and facilitators to engaging with expressive writing activities are considered. Therefore, the present study aimed to seek healthcare workers' views on expressive writing activities for enhancing wellbeing. We informed 11 UK-based health and social care professionals about current research into the potential wellbeing benefits of expressive writing activities and c

Social connectedness mediates the effect of awe in reducing dishonest behavior.

Dishonest behavior is immoral and can cause harm to relationships and social development. To investigate whether awe can mitigate dishonest behavior from the perspective of self-transcendent emotion, we conducted three studies. In Study 1, 347 college students completed the dispositional awe scale and questions related to dishonest tendencies. The results showed that dispositional awe was negatively related to dishonest tendencies. In Study 2, an experimental approach was taken with 157 participants randomly assigned to awe, amusement, and neutral conditions. The analysis revealed that participants in the awe group exhibited lower levels of dishonest behavior compared to those in the amusement and neutral groups. In Study 3, we further examined the mechanisms underlying this relationship with 210 participants. The results demonstrated that social connectedness, but not the universe conne

Event-Related Potential Study on the Effect of Ego Depletion on Perceptual Anticipation Under Negative Emotion.

The present study employed a combination of behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measures to investigate the effect of ego depletion on perceptual anticipation in tennis-trained undergraduates under negative emotion. The findings will provide a theoretical foundation for enhancing training efficacy in this specific population. Negative emotion was induced by film clips, while ego-depletion was elicited through a Stroop task. Perceptual anticipation was evaluated using temporally occluded tennis videos. Under negative emotion, participants exhibited shorter reaction time and higher accuracy either in the low ego-depletion state or at 160 ms after hitting the ball. Additionally, there was a shorter N2 peak latency at 160 ms after hitting the ball than at the moment of hitting the ball. The peak amplitudes of N2, P3, and LNC mean amplitude were significantly lower under the low ego-

The impact of teacher emotional support on learning engagement among college students mediated by academic self-efficacy and academic resilience.

College students' learning engagement not only significantly influences their academic performance but also plays a vital role in their future career development. Ensuring that students maintain high levels of engagement is essential for society's goal of cultivating high-quality talent. Therefore, understanding the key factors that drive student engagement is critical for educators as they develop effective strategies to foster this engagement. This study aims to explore the mechanisms behind the relationship between teachers' emotional support and college students' learning engagement, with a focus on the mediating roles of academic self-efficacy and academic resilience. Accordingly, the following hypotheses are proposed: (1) Teacher emotional support positively predicts learning engagement; (2) Academic self-efficacy and academic resilience serve as mediators between teacher emotional

Imagery rescripting of interpersonal transgressions: Forgiveness, revenge, and commitment in the victim-transgressor relationship.

Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) is a well-established psychotherapeutic intervention for treating aversive memories, such as those related to interpersonal transgressions. However, questions remain regarding the optimal implementation of ImRs, particularly concerning which components are most effective. In this experimental study (N = 271), we examined whether guiding participants to imagine forgiving versus taking revenge on a transgressor would differentially affect key emotional and cognitive outcomes. Additionally, we investigated the moderating role of the initial victim-transgressor commitment. Participants were instructed to imagine being the victims in a fictional interpersonal transgression. The imagined transgressor was a person with whom they had either a weak or strong commitment. Participants then engaged in an audio-guided ImRs session oriented toward either forgiveness or reven

An android can show the facial expressions of complex emotions.

Trust and rapport are essential abilities for human-robot interaction. Producing emotional expressions in the robots' faces is an effective way for that purpose. Androids can show human-like facial expressions of basic emotions. However, whether androids can show the facial expression of complex emotions remains unknown. In this experiment, we investigated the android Nikola's ability to produce 22 dynamic facial expressions of complex emotions. For each video, 240 international participants (120 Japanese, 120 German) rated the emotions expressed by Nikola. For 13 complex emotions (i.e., amusement, appal, awe, boredom, contentment, coyness, hatred, hesitation, moral disgust, not face, pain, sleepiness, suspicion), participants of both samples rated the target emotion above the mean of other non-target emotions. Four emotions (bitterness, confusion, pride, relief) were rated above mean by

Effects of expressive writing of positive emotions on mental health among patients with ovarian cancer undergoing postoperative chemotherapy.

Purpose: Patients with ovarian cancer often experience significant psychological distress during postoperative chemotherapy, including anxiety and depression. Expressive writing of positive emotions has shown potential in improving psychological health and fostering post-traumatic growth (PTG) in cancer patients. However, its application to ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy remains under-explored. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 82 ovarian cancer patients undergoing postoperative chemotherapy at a tertiary hospital in Changchun, China. Patients were divided into an experimental group (n = 40) receiving expressive writing intervention and a control group (n = 42) receiving routine care. Outcomes were assessed using the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) at baseline and after a

Associations among PTSD symptoms, fear of emotion, and couple communication difficulties: A between-person dyadic analysis.

This study investigated between-person associations among PTSD symptoms, fear of emotion, and perceived couple communication difficulties in a dyadic context among 64 trauma-exposed, mixed gender community couples (N = 128 individuals) using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model. Individuals with higher PTSD symptoms endorsed greater fear of their emotions (βMen = .72; βWomen = .49), and those with greater fear of their emotions reported lower levels of constructive couple communication (βMen = -.19; βWomen = -.21) and higher levels of self-demand/partner-withdraw communication (βMen = .20; βWomen = .25) and partner-demand/self-withdraw communication (βMen = .26; βWomen = .33) with their partners. Additionally, women whose partners had higher PTSD symptoms endorsed greater fear of their emotions (β = .30). The most robust indirect PTSD-communication links were between (a) ind

Thinking Outside of Yourself: The Potential of Awe in Mitigating Psychological Reactance Via Inspiring Self-Transcendence.

Awe, a self-transcendent emotion that can transform our egocentric perspective, has the potential to reduce the resistance to freedom-threatening messages. However, no research has yet offered empirical evidence in health and environmental communication contexts. The present research aims to bridge this gap by explicating whether and how awe alleviates psychological reactance induced by threat-to-freedom messages. We conducted a survey (N = 353, Study 1) and an online experiment (N = 419, Study 2) to examine whether trait awe and video-induced state awe can improve persuasion outcomes by mitigating psychological reactance. Results showed that trait awe was negatively associated with trait reactance. Additionally, state awe dampened state reactance by elevating self-transcendence and diminishing the perceptions of threat to freedom and reactance, which improved one's attitudes toward the

Self-concept clarity and envy as mediators between upward social comparison on social networking sites and subjective well-being.

The popularity of social networking sites increases opportunities for upward social comparison, potentially affecting individuals' subjective well-being. However, research on how this comparison impacts well-being's sub-components (i.e., positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction) is scarce. This study, based on social comparison theory and the full theoretical construct of subjective well-being, explores these relationships and their mechanisms. A total of 970 Chinese youth participants (M age = 19.42 years, SD = 2.01) completed self-report measures. The results showed that the independent mediating effect of envy and the chain mediating effect of self-concept clarity and envy contributed to all three models. In addition, the independent mediating effect of self-concept clarity only contributed to the model for negative affect. This study emphasizes that the construct of en

The role of bodily experiences during pregnancy on mother and infant outcomes.

Pregnancy is a transformative time for women and their bodies, and therefore thoughts and feelings and about one's own body and internal bodily sensations may understandably change during this period. Body satisfaction and interoception have been found to influence factors such as antenatal attachment (AA) and maternal mental health. However, mixed results in the literature suggest complex relationships between the bodily experience during pregnancy and outcomes, necessitating a broader investigative approach. We aim to examine the relationship between the pregnancy bodily experience and multiple mother-infant outcomes. It is hypothesised that poor bodily experiences during pregnancy will have negative impacts on these outcomes. Cross-sectional online survey data was collected from individuals at various gestations throughout pregnancy as part of a larger longitudinal study (N = 253, mea

Emotion specificity, coherence, and cultural variation in conceptualizations of positive emotions: a study of body sensations and emotion recognition.

The present study examines the association between people's interoceptive representation of physical sensations and the recognition of vocal and facial expressions of emotion. We used body maps to study the granularity of the interoceptive conceptualisation of 11 positive emotions (amusement, awe, compassion, contentment, desire, love, joy, interest, pride, relief, and triumph) and a new emotion recognition test (Emotion Expression Understanding Test) to assess the ability to recognise emotions from vocal and facial behaviour. Overall, we found evidence for distinct interoceptive conceptualizations of 11 positive emotions across Asian American, European American, and Latino/a American cultures, as well as the reliable identification of emotion in facial and vocal expressions. Central to new theorising about emotion-related representation, the granularity of physical sensations did not co

Impact of awe on topic interest and recognition memory for information in planetarium films.

We investigated the impact of situational awe on topic-specific interest and recognition memory for information presented in immersive planetarium films. Adult participants (N = 131) were recruited among science centre visitors who were going to view one of the films shown in the science centre's planetarium. Participants responded to questions about prior knowledge, topic-specific interest in the film and background information before viewing one of the three planetarium films. After the film, they completed the topic-specific interest scale, epistemically-related emotion scales, situation-specific awe scale, critical thinking disposition scale and a recognition task of the film contents. The results showed that during viewing planetarium films participants experienced awe, but the strength of this emotion varied among films. Additionally, situation-specific awe was strongly associated

The Mediating Role of the Primary Emotional Systems and Rumination on the Relationship Between Resilience and Perceived Stress.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the potential mediating influence of primary emotional systems and rumination on the relationship between resilience and perceived stress. Method: A sample of 503 undergraduate students completed a selfreport battery including the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), the Ruminative Responses Scale–Brief Form (RRS-BF), and the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scale (ANPS). Common method bias was assessed and found not to be a significant concern. Hypothesized relationships and indirect effects were tested using path analysis and mediation analysis (bootstrapping), with model fit assessed via CFI, TLI, RMSEA, and BIC indices. Results: The final model, controlling for gender and age, demonstrated good fit (χ²/df = 2.91, RMSEA = 0.068, TLI = 0.963, CFI = 0.998). Resilience was negatively associated with the FEAR, SADNESS, an

Awe predicts well-being via positive attention bias: Evidence from longitudinal and daily diary studies.

Awe is a mixed emotion that is considered important in the protection of well-being during crisis, such as COVID-19. However, there is limited understanding of the long-term and dynamic effects of awe on well-being and the pathways behind these effects. Drawing on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions and the theory of mood-congruent bias, the present study utilized longitudinal and daily diary approaches to investigate the relationship between awe and well-being, as well as the mediating role of attention bias. In longitudinal Study 1, 524 participants (Nfemale = 365, 69.7%), aged from 18 to 72, completed online surveys three times with 1-month intervals. Cross-lagged analyses demonstrated that awe exerted a significant predictive effect on individuals' well-being. Moreover, positive attention bias served as a mediator in this relationship. In diary Study 2, 183 college stud

The two-way relationship of interpersonal curiosity and daily envy.

Objective: Envy and interpersonal curiosity are common emotional and psychological phenomena in relationships that collectively influence our social behavior and experiences. However, there is a research gap regarding the interaction between interpersonal curiosity and envy. Therefore, this study will primarily utilize daily diary methods to investigate the relationship between interpersonal curiosity and envy. Method: Using the Benign and Malicious Envy Scale and the Chinese Adolescents' Interpersonal Curiosity Questionnaire, Study 1 conducted a preliminary study on 392 middle school students using cross-sectional data. Based on the data from Study 1, we selected the ten items (2 items per variable) with the highest factor load for the daily measurement of Study 2. Study 2 utilized the diary method and recruited 81 adolescents as participants for a 14-day measurement period. Results: Th

What makes us feel good? A data-driven investigation of positive emotion experience.

What does it mean to feel good? Is our experience of gazing in awe at a majestic mountain fundamentally different than erupting with triumph when our favorite team wins the championship? Here, we use a semantic space approach to test which positive emotional experiences are distinct from each other based on in-depth personal narratives of experiences involving 22 positive emotions (n = 165; 3,592 emotional events). A bottom-up computational analysis was applied to the transcribed text, with unsupervised clustering employed to maximize internal granular consistency (i.e., the clusters being maximally different and maximally internally homogeneous). The analysis yielded four emotions that map onto distinct clusters of subjective experiences: amusement, interest, lust, and tenderness. The application of the semantic space approach to in-depth personal accounts yields a nuanced understanding

Awe Correlates With Resilience to COVID-19 Stressors Independent of Religiosity.

Awe is an emotion defined by an experience of vastness and cognitive accommodation that is unique among other positive emotions in that its cognitive effects are more similar to those of negative emotions. The current study posits that because of its unique cognitive effects, awe may related to resilience to stressors introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was hypothesized that awe would significantly correlate with resilience to COVID-19 even when controlling for religiosity. Religiosity was included in the analyses because of strong support in previous research connecting it to both awe and resilience. Regression analyses revealed that awe and religiosity were both significant correlates of resilience but when placed in the same model, the relationship between religiosity and resilience disappeared. An exploratory mediation analysis was conducted to further explore this result. Implic

Understanding and optimising gratitude interventions: the right methods for the right people at the right time.

Objective: Gratitude has consistently been associated with various beneficial health-related outcomes, including subjective wellbeing, positive mental health, and positive physical health. In light of such effects, positive psychology researchers and practitioners have often implemented gratitude interventions in an attempt to build individuals' orientations toward appreciation and thankfulness. Recent meta-analyses and reviews have revealed, however, that these interventions often have mixed effects on gratitude or other health outcomes. With this issue in mind, we aimed to identify (a) contextual considerations that may impact the effectiveness of these approaches, and (b) recommendations for the optimisation of gratitude interventions. Methods and measures: Seventeen mental health professionals or experienced health psychology researchers engaged in semi-structured interviews to addre

Building bridges with awe: Exploring underlying mechanisms and moderators of the relationship between awe and prejudice towards sexual minority group members.

Awe is a self-transcendent emotion generating a range of benefits at the individual and at the societal level. Yet, research within the domain of intergroup relations is scarce. Across three studies-two experimental and one cross-sectional (total N = 2113)-we explored whether, how and for whom awe is negatively related to prejudice towards sexual minority group members (LGBT individuals) among sexual majority group members (heterosexual people). We found that participants assigned to a nature-induced awe (vs. control, Study 1; vs. control vs. amusement, Study 2) condition reported lower prejudice towards LGBT people. Moreover, Study 2 shed light on the underlying mechanisms through which nature-induced awe leads to lower prejudice, demonstrating the parallel mediating role of self-transcendence and belief in oneness, two constructs related to the promotion of broader group identities, by

The selection landscape and genetic legacy of ancient Eurasians.

The Holocene (beginning around 12,000 years ago) encompassed some of the most significant changes in human evolution, with far-reaching consequences for the dietary, physical and mental health of present-day populations. Using a dataset of more than 1,600 imputed ancient genomes1, we modelled the selection landscape during the transition from hunting and gathering, to farming and pastoralism across West Eurasia. We identify key selection signals related to metabolism, including that selection at the FADS cluster began earlier than previously reported and that selection near the LCT locus predates the emergence of the lactase persistence allele by thousands of years. We also find strong selection in the HLA region, possibly due to increased exposure to pathogens during the Bronze Age. Using ancient individuals to infer local ancestry tracts in over 400,000 samples from the UK Biobank, we

Exploring Brain Activity During Awe-Inducing Virtual Reality Experiences: a Multi-Metric EEG Frequency Analysis.

This scientific research represents a novel investigation into the neural underpinnings of the complex awe emotion, made possible with an innovative experimental setup that integrates nature-based Virtual Reality scenarios (nVRs) with the concurrent recording of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. The noninvasive EEG technique enables to capture brain electrical activity in real time and therefore holds great promise in elucidating the neural dynamics associated with complex emotional experiences. A group of 15 healthy volunteers participated in the study; EEG recordings were performed at baseline (closed-eyes resting-state without VR), and during the participants' navigation within four immersive nVRs, three designed to elicit the profound feeling of awe and one of reference. To unveil the neural underpinnings associated with awe experiences, linear and nonlinear frequency analyses, P

Natural soundscapes enhance mood recovery amid anthropogenic noise pollution.

In urbanised landscapes, the scarcity of green spaces and increased exposure to anthropogenic noise have adverse effects on health and wellbeing. While reduced speed limits have historically been implemented to address traffic safety, their potential impact on residents' wellbeing, especially in relation to engagement with natural soundscapes, remains understudied. Our study investigates the influence of i) natural soundscapes, including bird song, and ii) the addition of traffic noise to natural soundscapes at two speeds (20 mi/h and 40 mi/h) on mood. We found that natural soundscapes were strongly linked with the lowest levels of anxiety and stress, with an increase in stress levels associated with mixed natural soundscapes with the addition of 20 mi/h traffic noise and the highest levels with 40 mi/h traffic noise. Higher levels of hedonic tone, indicative of positive mood, was noted

Beyond beauty: Does visual art facilitate social cognitive skills?

Engaging with art can move individuals through a myriad of emotions, provoke reflective thoughts, and lead to new ideas. Could art also influence interpersonal outcomes pertaining to the ways we interact with others and navigate the social world, that is, our suite of social cognitive skills? Here, we focus on visual art to explore the effect of art engagement on personal aesthetic experience and social cognitive skills. Across two studies, using veridical paintings and matched non-art photos, we examined the effect of art engagement on emotional (e.g., awe, being moved) and eudaimonic experiences (e.g., reflective thoughts), as well as social cognitive skills pertaining to Theory of Mind (ToM) and recognition of other's emotions. Further, we varied the depth with which participants engaged with the experiences of the characters in the artworks, to assess whether deep social information
