Parental Rejection, Overprotection and Adolescent Smartphone Addiction: Mediating Role of Sense of Security and Moderating Role of Forgiveness.
This study examined a moderated mediation model linking parental rejection and overprotection to smartphone addiction, with sense of security as a mediator and forgiveness as a moderator. A total of 730 students (mean age = 12.15 ± 1.13 years; 50.7% female) were recruited from two primary and two secondary schools in Hunan, China, using cluster sampling by class, and all participants completed a set of self-report questionnaires. Results showed that, after controlling for gender and age, both parental rejection and overprotection were positively associated with smartphone addiction and negatively associated with sense of security and forgiveness. Sense of security partially mediated the links between negative parenting and smartphone addiction. Interpersonal forgiveness moderates the direct associations between parental rejection, overprotection and adolescent smartphone addiction, and s…

The virtue of temperance: a neurobiological perspective.
Introduction: The virtue of temperance is a unique psychological characteristic that has been long regarded as a positive quality throughout many cultures. While it is colloquially recognized and appreciated, the neural underpinnings of temperance remain largely unexplored. In order to better understand the positive influence of this virtue, it would be useful to explore the following components of temperance: forgiveness, humility, prudence and emotional self-regulation. Our review outlines a theorized model connecting these components to specific neuroanatomical locations and overall psychological effects to highlight the areas of the brain associated with temperance.
Methods: In reviewing the literature regarding the four components of temperance, a neurobiological model of temperance is proposed. Each component was analyzed independently, combining findings from various neuroimaging …

The effect of Enright Process and REACH forgiveness models on promoting forgiveness among college students in Ashanti, Ghana.
Introduction: Forgiveness interventions have gained increasing attention in counselling psychology as effective approaches for addressing interpersonal hurt among students. However, empirical evidence comparing the effectiveness of the Enright Process Model and the REACH Forgiveness Model within the Ghanaian college context remains limited. This study therefore explored the effects of these two models on forgiveness among college education students in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental pre-test, post-test control group design. The population comprised second-year students from three selected Colleges of Education in the Ashanti Region. A sample of 60 students who met eligibility criteria and reported experiencing interpersonal hurt was selected and randomly assigned into three groups: two experimental groups (Enright Process and REACH models) an…

Forgiveness of Self and Situations and Rumination as Mental Health Correlates in Dental School Students.
Introduction: It is widely acknowledged that dental training is stressful, with students being vulnerable to burnout, anxiety, and depression.
Objective: This study examined the associations between psychosocial risk factors (maladaptive perfectionism and rumination) and resilience factors (forgiveness of self, others, and situations, and compassion for self and others) with burnout, depression, and anxiety.
Method: In 2023, an electronic questionnaire was distributed to all dental students at a US dental school. Validated self-report measures were used to assess three domains: (a) mental health outcomes (burnout, depression, and anxiety), (b) risk factors (perfectionism and rumination), and (c) protective factors (compassion; self-compassion; and forgiveness of self, others, and situations). Socio-demographic measures were also collected. Seventy dental students participated, representi…

Effectiveness of a forgiveness-based intervention to promote post-traumatic growth in hemodialysis patients: an experimental controlled study.
Background: Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) is a key indicator of psychological wellbeing and quality of life in patients undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis (MHD). Forgiveness, as a positive psychological process, involves transforming negative responses into adaptive ones after trauma and may facilitate PTG by reducing resentment and promoting emotional recovery. However, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of forgiveness-based interventions in enhancing PTG remains limited, particularly among hemodialysis patients.
Objective: This study aimed to develop a forgiveness-based intervention program for post-traumatic growth in patients undergoing MHD and to evaluate its effectiveness.
Methods: This study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Yunnan Province with 78 maintenance hemodialysis patients assigned to an intervention group (n = 39) and a control group (n = 39). The intervention …

The impact of exposure to morally injurious events on posttraumatic stress symptoms among Israeli combat veterans: A longitudinal moderated mediation model of moral injury outcomes and dispositional forgiveness.
Background: Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) during military service can lead to moral injury (MI) outcomes and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). This longitudinal study examined the relationships between PMIE exposure, MI outcomes, and PTSS among Israeli combat veterans, and the potential protective role of dispositional forgiveness in these associations.
Method: Participants were 169 Israeli combat veterans who participated in a six-year longitudinal study with four measurement points (T1: 12 months before enlistment, T2: Six months following enlistment- pre-deployment, T3: 18 months following enlistment- post-deployment, and T4: 28 months following discharge). Participants' characteristics were assessed via semi-structured interviews (T1) and validated self-report measures (T2-T4) between 2019-2024.
Results: Approximately 36% of participants reported exposu…

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Forgiveness, Rumination, Intolerance of Uncertainty, and Social Anxiety in Emerging Adults: A Multi-Mediation Analysis.
Despite growing empirical evidence of the devastating impact of adverse experiences on adult mental health, little is known about the underlying mechanisms that statistically explain the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and social anxiety. A critical step is to examine these mediational pathways to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing social anxiety symptoms among emerging adults with histories of ACEs. The present study investigated a serial multiple mediation model examining the association between ACEs and social anxiety via forgiveness, rumination, and intolerance of uncertainty. The sample consisted of 515 emerging adults (70.9% female), aged between 18 and 25 years (M = 21.59, SD = 1.81). The findings indicated that forgiveness significantly mediated the relationship between ACEs and both rumination and intolerance of un…

DeMarco MJ (2024)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usFrontiers in psychology2 citations 6-Fold path to self-forgiveness: an interdisciplinary model for the treatment of moral injury with intervention strategies for clinicians.
Conscience is the indestructible core of one's personal identity and their sense of agency in the world. When it passes judgment against them, it generates inner conflict (i.e., moral injury). At its core, moral injury is about trust and sacred relationships, particularly the loss of safe connection with self, society, God/Divine/a Higher Power, and the world. The clash between a person's conscience and overwhelming existential or psychospiritual experiences, which uniquely defines moral injury, alienates them from life-sustaining relationships. Healing requires more than reordering fractured belief systems. Reestablishing bonds of self-worth, trust, and life-sustaining relationships are essential. This paper presents the 6-Fold Path to Self-Forgiveness (6-FPSF), an interdisciplinary, narrative-based healing writing process for the treatment of moral injury, particularly self-induced mor…

The influence of a Learning to Forgive Program on institutional offending and recidivism among offenders with mental disorder.
Previous researchers have demonstrated that learning to forgive may reduce the likelihood of offending/reoffending. Forgiveness therapy may be useful for rehabilitation by assisting traumatized individuals to release revengeful emotions. The current study is a follow up to a previous study that examined the effects of a 6-week forgiveness psychoeducational intervention for offenders with mental disorders. The aim of the current study was to determine any differences for participants who received a forgiveness intervention versus a control group for rates of recidivism (likelihood of reoffending and length of time to reoffend) and type of institutional offense. Recidivism data was collected through the Canadian Police Information Center. Both the control and treatment group in this study were selected from offenders with mental disorder at the Regional Psychiatric Centre, a multilevel for…

Differential effects of decisional and emotional forgiveness on distress and well-being: A three-wave study of Indonesian adults.
Research suggests that interpersonal forgiveness is beneficial to individual functioning, but few longitudinal studies have explored the independent contributions of decisional and emotional forgiveness to reducing different forms of distress and improving multidimensional well-being. In this three-wave (T1: December 2020; T2: January 2021; T3: February 2021) prospective study of predominantly young Indonesian adults (n = 595), we examined the associations of decisional and emotional forgiveness with three indicators of distress and 10 components of well-being. Applying the outcome-wide analytic template for longitudinal designs, our primary analysis involved estimating two sets of linear regression models (one set for decisional forgiveness and one set for emotional forgiveness) in which the outcomes were regressed on each interpersonal forgiveness process (one outcome at a time). Adjus…

Compassionate reappraisal and rumination impact forgiveness, emotion, sleep, and prosocial accountability.
Sufficient sleep quality and quantity are important for biopsychosocial well-being. Correlational research has linked trait forgiveness to better sleep. Prior experimental evidence also demonstrated contrasting effects of offense rumination versus compassionate reappraisal on forgiveness and psychophysiological responses, suggesting the value of testing effects on sleep. The present study assessed 180 participants (90 M, 90 F). First, we replicated an individual difference model of forgiveness, rumination, depressed and anxious affect, and sleep. Second, we conducted a quasi-experiment inducing offense rumination and compassionate reappraisal on two consecutive nights. Compassionate reappraisal (vs. rumination) replicated past research by prompting more empathic, forgiving, positive, and social responses, with less negative emotion including anger. New findings revealed that compassionat…

Forgiveness: A Key Component of Healing From Moral Injury?
Service members and veterans can be exposed to potentially traumatic and morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) including participating in, witnessing, or failing to prevent an act(s) that transgresses their core beliefs. Violation of one's deeply held morals and values can be profoundly distressing and shatter one's sense of self at the deepest level. Relationships with self, others, the world, and for some, the Sacred, can also be fractured. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Moral Injury (MI) can result. Left unresolved, MI can leave individuals struggling with guilt, shame, cognitive dissonance, and negative self-attributions. A holistic approach that addresses the psychological and spiritual harm associated with MI is warranted. We wonder if forgiveness can help individuals struggling with MI to address the harm caused by actions or inactions, release negative emotions, and…

The Future of Evidence-Based Temperance Interventions.
Positive psychology has accumulated a large and ever-growing body of scientific knowledge about human strengths and virtues. However, research on positive psychology interventions (PPIs) to develop such is still in its infancy. In this brief position paper, we summarize the status of PPIs in one of the positive psychology's most important virtues: temperance. Temperance refers to the capacity to manage habits and protect against excess and is composed of forgiveness, humility, and (we include) patience. Specifically, we examine the current state-of-the-science in the conceptualization of temperance, explore the efficacy of temperance interventions, and reflect upon what the future may hold in this research domain. In this paper, we first highlight the challenges and opportunities for expanding the theoretical conceptualization of temperance and reflect upon the challenges in temperance-r…

Mental Health Clinician Community Clergy Collaboration to Address Moral Injury Symptoms: A Feasibility Study.
Moral injury (MI) symptoms (guilt, shame, isolation) can be associated with military experiences. While a degree of overlap is recognized between MI and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, MI symptoms do not always respond to evidence-based treatments for PTSD. Mental Health Clinician Community Chaplain Collaboration (MC4) was delivered by community clergy to address MI symptoms through facilitation of forgiveness and community reintegration. Thirteen veterans participated and the results suggested that MC4 was generally feasible and acceptable. However, it is unlikely community clergy time could keep up with demand. Shifting intervention delivery to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) chaplains will alleviate many barriers experienced in this feasibility study.

Autobiographical Memory, Gratitude, Forgiveness and Sense of Humor: An Intervention in Older Adults.
Research has shown that happiness and well-being play a fundamental role in the health of older adults. For this reason, programs based on Positive Psychology seek to improve quality of life, preventing and reducing the appearance of emotional disorders. The objective of this study was to verify whether an intervention based on Autobiographical Memory, Forgiveness, Gratitude, and Sense of humor would increase quality of life in institutionalized older adults. We used a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention measures and follow-on measures at 3, 6, and 12 months. A total of 111 institutionalized older adults participated in the study and were randomly assigned to one of three groups: experimental (n = 36), placebo (n = 39), and control (n = 36). Measurements were taken of depression, subjective happiness, satisfaction with life, psychological well-being, and specific me…

Assessing Psychometric Properties of the Italian Version of the Heartland Forgiveness Scale.
Despite increasing popularity and intensive worldwide use, few studies have assessed the validity and factorial structure of the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS). However, scientific literature showed that the original factorial structure of the HFS was not fully replicated and-in addition-the Italian translation is still lacking. To fill this gap, this study aims to extend evidence about the original HFS factorial validity by analyzing the Italian version. The final sample was composed of 523 randomly enrolled participants [139 males (26.6%), 384 females (73.4%)] aged from 18 to 82 years (mean = 42.53, SD = 16.41) who completed the Italian version of the HFS. The confirmatory factor analysis showed good fit indices for the original hierarchical factor solution and a significant decrease in model fit was found for all of the competing models. Also, the Italian version of the HFS reveale…

Does Christian Spirituality Enhance Psychological Interventions on Forgiveness, Gratitude, and the Meaning of Life? A Quasi-Experimental Intervention with the Elderly and Youth.
Scientific research has provided theoretical evidence on the implementation of religious/spiritual interventions (RSI) as a complementary health therapy, where spiritual improvements are also a factor to consider. Despite the above, there are few studies that have evaluated the clinical applicability of these findings. This study was an intervention with older and younger adults divided into two treatment groups and one control group. What is expected is that the two treatment groups will score better than the control group; however, the group with a Christian spiritual focus is expected to perform better than the group without a spiritual focus. Measures of gratitude, meaning of life, forgiveness, spirituality, religiosity, and expected prejudice were recorded. The hypothesis is fulfilled that Christian spirituality enhances psychological interventions on factors associated with persona…

Forgiveness, Gratitude, Happiness, and Prosocial Bystander Behavior in Bullying.
The relationships among character strengths (forgiveness and gratitude), happiness, and prosocial bystander behavior in bullying were analyzed. The sample includes 500 (early adolescents) and 500 (middle adolescents) of both genders, between 12 and 18 years old (M age = 14.70, SD = 1.58). Two structural equation models were calculated. Results of the first model indicated that forgiveness, gratitude, and happiness had a direct positive relation with prosocial bystander behavior. Furthermore, human strengths were indirectly related to prosocial behavior in bullying for this effect in happiness. The second model showed that prosocial bystander behavior had a positive effect on human strengths and happiness. Multigroup analyses indicated that gender and stage of adolescence did not moderate the relations found in the model. Overall findings suggest a reciprocal relationship between characte…
