Muhammad is only a messenger before whom many messengers have been and gone. If he died or was killed, would you revert to your old ways? If anyone did so, he would not harm God in the least. God will reward the grateful

It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are sailing on ships and rejoicing in the favouring wind, a storm arrives: waves come at those on board from all sides and they feel there is no escape. Then they pray to God, professing sincere devotion to Him, ‘If You save us from this we shall be truly thankful.’

Say [Prophet], ‘Who is it that saves you from the dark depths of land and sea when you humbly and secretly call to Him [and say], “If He rescues us from this, We shall truly be thankful”?’

Commentary on the verses above, at most two editions per verse.
When your Lord proclaimed, “If you give thanks, I will surely increase you.” In other words: “If you give thanks for submission, I will increase you in faith. If you give thanks for faith, I will increase you in beautiful doing. If you give thanks for beautiful doing, I will in- crease you in recognition. If you give thanks for recognition, I will increase you in union. If you give thanks for union, I will increase you in contemplation. If you give thanks for the gifts that I bestow upon you, I will increase you in the encounter I have promised you.” It has been narrated that David said, “My Lord, how should I give thanks to You, for my giving thanks is a renewal of Your favor toward me.” He said, “O David, what you said now is giving thanks to Me.”
And when your Lord proclaimed when He made it known that “If you are thankful for My graces through affirmation of My Oneness and obedience to Me then assuredly I shall give you more; but if you are thankless if you deny the truth of the grace through disbelief and disobedience then assuredly I shall chastise you — as is indicated by His following words — My chastisement is indeed severe” ’.
MuḤammad is only a messenger. Messengers have passed away before him. What, if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? If anyone turns back on his heels, he will not harm God in anything, and God will recompense the grateful. As much as MuḤammad is praised and chosen among all men and caressed by the God of the world's folk, as much as he is the pole of the world and the lamp of heaven and earth, the chieftain and full moon of the universe, emulated by the creatures, the paragon of the engendered beings, and the Seal of the Prophets-despite all this, he is a mortal man. Death is fitting for him and an- nihilation applies to him. As many prophets as there have been in the world, all of them went. The Real did not disappear, nor was God harmed. The Real remained after all of them, and God is their keeper in the perfection of His exaltedness. By way of allusion, the folk of
He it is who makes you journey on land and sea. Even so, when you are in the ship-it takes them along with a goodly breeze, and they rejoice in it; there comes upon them a raging wind, and waves come from every place and they think that they will be encompassed by them; they supplicate God, purifying the religion for Him: " If Thou savest us from this, we shall surely be among the thankful. " In the tongue of the folk of allusion, the journey on land is taking the road to the drinking places of the Shariah through inference by means of the message. The journey on the sea is the overwhelm- ing force of the Real which, at the moment of ecstasy, pulls the reins of the servant's steed without intermediaries through the way stations of the Haqiqah to the places of contemplating holiness. Just as on the sea you make a one-month journey in one day, so also in this field the chevalier traverses
O Moses, surely I have chosen thee over the people through My messages and My speak- ing. So take what I have given thee, and be one of the thankful. “O Moses, I have held you back from one thing, and that is vision, but I have specified you for many virtues. I have chosen you for messengerhood and I have honored you with eminence of state. Give thanks for all this and recognize these blessings. And be one of the thankful, and do not expose yourself to the station of complaint.” In this meaning has been sung, If they turn away, they are the ones who came in tenderness. How loyal they were, so be patient with them if they break off.
With regard to their being routed when it was rumoured that the Prophet had been killed and the hypocrites had said to the believers ‘If he has been killed go back to your previous religion’ the following was revealed Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. Why if he should die or is slain like others will you turn back on your heels will you return to unbelief the last statement is the locus of the interrogative of denial in other words ‘he was not a worshipped being so that if he were to die you should turn back to your previous religion’. If any man should turn back on his heels he will not harm God in any way but will be harming himself and God will requite those that are thankful for His graces by staying firm.

A systematic review of the strength of evidence for the most commonly recommended happiness strategies in mainstream media.: We conducted a systematic review of the evidence underlying some of the most widely recommended strategies for increasing happiness. By coding media articles on happiness, we first identified the five most commonly recommended strategies: expressing gratitude, enhancing sociability, exercising, practising mindfulness/meditation and increasing nature exposure. Next, we conducted a systematic search of the published scientific literature. We identified well-powered, pre-registered experiments test
Becoming happier takes both a will and a proper way: an experimental longitudinal intervention to boost well-being.: An 8-month-long experimental study examined the immediate and longer term effects of regularly practicing two assigned positive activities (expressing optimism and gratitude) on well-being. More important, this intervention allowed us to explore the impact of two metafactors that are likely to influence the success of any positive activity: whether one self-selects into the study knowing that it is about increasing happiness and whether one invests effort into the activity over time. Our results
A program of positive intervention in the elderly: memories, gratitude and forgiveness.: Objective: The main goal of this study has been to increase the quality of life in people of over 60 years through a positive psychology intervention. Method: We employed a program which consists of training based on autobiographical memory, forgiveness and gratitude. The sample consisted of 46 participants aged 60-93 years. State and trait anxiety, depression, general memory, specific memories, life satisfaction and subjective happiness were measured. Results: The results revealed that particip
Do Grittier People Have Greater Subjective Well-Being? A Meta-Analysis.: The present study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the relation between grit and subjective well-being (SWB). The association between grit (i.e., overall grit, perseverance of effort, and consistency of interest) and SWB (i.e., positive affect, negative affect, happiness, depression, life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and school satisfaction) were synthesized across 83 studies and 66,518 participants. The results based on a random-effects model showed a substantial correlation between over
A meta-analysis of the effectiveness of gratitude interventions on well-being across cultures.: Gratitude practice is a popular strategy for promoting happiness worldwide. However, is it equally effective for people from different cultural backgrounds? To answer this question, we conducted a preregistered meta-analysis on the effectiveness of gratitude interventions on well-being across cultures. Using data from 145 papers, 163 samples, 727 effect sizes, and 24,804 participants from 28 countries, we found that gratitude interventions led to small overall increases in well-being, Hedges' g
The Relationship Between Self-Compassion and Well-Being: A Meta-Analysis.: Background: Self-compassion describes a positive and caring attitude of a person toward her- or himself in the face of failures and individual shortcomings. As a result of this caring attitude, individuals high in self-compassion are assumed to experience higher individual well-being. The present meta-analysis examines the relationship between self-compassion and different forms of well-being. Method: The authors combined k = 79 samples, with an overall sample size of N = 16,416, and analyzed th
The Role of Communication in Romantic Attachment and Relationship Satisfaction: A Dyadic Longitudinal Study.
Researchers and clinicians note that romantic attachment insecurities, negative communication, and stressors interact in ways that gradually undermine relationship satisfaction over time. Grounding clinical models in empirical findings is crucial. This longitudinal study examined the mediating role of communication patterns in associations between romantic attachment insecurities and relationship satisfaction, while accounting for stressful life events. Path analyses conducted with 263 couples over a year revealed that attachment insecurities were indirectly associated with lower relationship satisfaction in both partners via greater use of demand/withdraw and demand/demand communication patterns. Attachment avoidance was indirectly associated with lower satisfaction in both partners via the withdraw/withdraw communication pattern. Results indicated differences according to dyad gender a…

Communication Is Key: The Mediating Effect of Demand-Withdraw Patterns on Partner Phubbing and Couple Satisfaction.
Technology use in the presence of partners is a common occurrence, with the connection it may have on communication and satisfaction in romantic relationships still being explored. An Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model was run with a sample of 103 heterosexual couples to explore the mediating role of demand-withdraw patterns on partner phubbing and couple satisfaction for both male and female partners. Results indicated significant mediation present for both men and women, impacting their own satisfaction and that of their partners. Clinical implications are discussed, focusing on the relational impact of the findings for practitioners.

Does life get better after middle age? Cultural comparisons of trends and key predictors of life satisfaction across the lifespan.
Background: This study investigated 1) whether there are differences in the trajectory of life satisfaction (LS) across the lifespan between British and Indonesian adults, and 2) which factors are associated with LS overall, and according to culture and age. Methods: 1355 participants aged 18 to 91 were included: 649 British and 706 Indonesian. Participants completed an online questionnaire examining LS, quality of life (which included physical health, psychological wellbeing, social relationships, and environment), depression, anxiety, and religiosity. Data were examined looking at all participants within each culture and then by further separating each cultural group into three age groups (Young adults/YA (18-39), middle-aged/MA (40-59), older adults/OA (60+). Results: The trajectory of LS across the lifespan was U-shaped in British participants but followed an inverted U-shaped patter…

Well-being in middle-aged and older adults who volunteer: a qualitative network analysis.
Objective: Social participation is essential for the health of older adults. Formal volunteering can reduce loneliness and is associated with numerous positive health outcomes. Older adults have limited resources to meet their social and well-being needs. We explore factors contributing to the well-being of middle-aged and older adults who engage in formal volunteering using a qualitative social network approach. Methods: Between 2022 and 2023, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 members of social clubs in Germany, aged 45-80 (mean age 62 years). Thirteen participants were retired. Eight interviewees were female and twenty were male. Participants created unstructured egocentric network maps of individuals or organisations important to their well-being. Participants reflected on their social networks using these maps, which allowed for deeper insights into changi…

Association between communication patterns, benefit finding, and relationship satisfaction in stroke couples: an actor-partner interdependence mediation model.
Aims: To explore the mediating role of relationship satisfaction between communication patterns and benefit findings in stroke couples using the actor-partner interdependence mediation model. Methods and results: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2022 to April 2023 in China. Based on the actor-partner interdependence mediation model, we used structural equation modelling to explore the mediating role of relationship satisfaction of stroke patients and their spouses in communication patterns and benefit findings. A total of 381 stroke couples (patients, 61.4% male, mean age 54.06; caregivers, mean age 53.58) were included in the data analysis. Actor effects showed that stroke couples' relationship satisfaction mediated each of their own three communication patterns (constructive communication, demand/withdraw communication, and mutual avoidance) and benefit findings. Perceived spousal similarity in outlook on life: implications for later-life well-being.
Objectives: People tend to choose marital partners who are similar to themselves, and spouses become increasingly similar in some respects due to shared life experiences. However, it is unknown whether spousal similarity contributes to the health of married people in later life. This study investigates whether and how spousal similarity in outlook on life is linked to later-life well-being. Methods: We used data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, a long-running prospective study following graduates from Wisconsin high schools in 1957 and their selected siblings. We measured perceived spousal similarity in outlook on life at both the individual (i.e., self-evaluation) and couple (i.e., concordance/discordance in evaluations between spouses) levels when participants were, 65 years old, on average. Later-life well-being was measured by self-rated general health, functional limitations, …

Prenatal psychosocial factors and changes in marital satisfaction after childbirth: an online cohort study of pregnant women.
Background: Marital satisfaction is a key determinant of maternal mental health during the perinatal period. Identifying psychosocial factors associated with changes in marital satisfaction can help inform early preventive interventions. Methods: This longitudinal study examined associations between psychosocial factors measured during pregnancy and changes in marital satisfaction from pregnancy to 52 weeks postpartum. Participants were 752 pregnant women in Japan (mean age = 32.0 ± 4.3 years) who completed online surveys during pregnancy and at 52 weeks postpartum. Marital satisfaction was assessed using the Quality of Marriage Index (QMI), a validated measure of relationship satisfaction, and categorized into three groups based on QMI score differences: improved (≥ 1-point increase), unchanged (0-point difference), and worsened (≥ 1-point decrease). Psychosocial variables included depr…

Are perfectionistic strivings beneficial or detrimental to well-being and achievement? Tests of procrastination and emotion regulation as moderators.
Objective: Researchers have called for an approach that examines the conditions under which perfectionistic strivings (PS) may be beneficial or detrimental to psychological functioning. We adopted a self-regulation perspective and tested whether individual differences in self-regulation (procrastination, emotion regulation) moderate PS's relationships with achievement and well-being in an academic/work-related achievement context. Method: A sample of 183 preservice teachers participated in a study that combined "traditional" longitudinal assessment (six performance situations over a 9-month period) with repeated ambulatory assessment (measuring well-being, procrastination, and emotion regulation during a total of 910 preparation phases that preceded performance situations). The role of bodily experiences during pregnancy on mother and infant outcomes.
Pregnancy is a transformative time for women and their bodies, and therefore thoughts and feelings and about one's own body and internal bodily sensations may understandably change during this period. Body satisfaction and interoception have been found to influence factors such as antenatal attachment (AA) and maternal mental health. However, mixed results in the literature suggest complex relationships between the bodily experience during pregnancy and outcomes, necessitating a broader investigative approach. We aim to examine the relationship between the pregnancy bodily experience and multiple mother-infant outcomes. It is hypothesised that poor bodily experiences during pregnancy will have negative impacts on these outcomes. Cross-sectional online survey data was collected from individuals at various gestations throughout pregnancy as part of a larger longitudinal study (N = 253, mea…

Effects of Screen-Based Leisure Time on 24 Subsequent Health and Wellbeing Outcomes: A Longitudinal Outcome-Wide Analysis.
Background: Previous research has shown that screen-based leisure time is related to physical and mental health, relationships, and prosocial behaviors. However, it remains unclear whether screen-based leisure time causally affects wellbeing, as previous studies have relied on cross-sectional data, focused on one type of media use (e.g., social media, video games, or internet), or assessed a narrow set of outcomes. Method: We used three waves (2016, 2017, 2019) of national longitudinal data from the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study to investigate the effects of screen-based leisure time on 24 parameters of wellbeing (n = 11,085). We operationalized screen-based leisure as the sum of time spent browsing the internet, using social media, watching/reading the news, watching videos, and playing video games. We followed the outcome-wide analytic design for observational data by performi…

Distinguishing perfectionism and excellencism in graduate students: Contrasting links with performance satisfaction, research self-efficacy, burnout, and dropout intentions.
Research on perfectionism in graduate school found inconsistent associations between perfectionistic standards and psychological outcomes. Such unanticipated results led to the Model of Excellencism and Perfectionism (MEP), which differentiates between people pursuing excellence and those pursuing perfection. Recent studies with undergraduate students have shown that excellencism and perfectionism are distinct constructs, differentially associated with achievement and psychological outcomes. In this study, we aimed to offer the first empirical test of the MEP in graduate school with a sample of 376 graduate students (i.e. 81% masters, 19% doctoral). Results of confirmatory factor analyses on the Scale of Perfectionism and Excellencism provided evidence for the conceptual separation of excellencism and perfectionism. Results of multiple regression showed that perfection strivers (compared…

Using a Positive Psychology Lens to Understand How Veterinary Medicine Learning Contexts Promote Student Thriving and Inhibit Frustration.
To develop a veterinary workforce equipped for long-term professional success, educational institutions must prioritize their students' well-being. Most approaches focus on building assets within the individual, like stress management, to limit negative outcomes, like burnout. Our research proposes a positive psychology-based model of student thriving that instead emphasizes the pervasive role of the social climate within a context. Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT) posits that social relationships at the institutional, faculty and staff, and peer levels will promote student thriving and limit frustration through the satisfaction or frustration of the three psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Veterinary medical students across the United States (N = 202) completed a survey, and we used structural equation modeling to test how their institution's social cli…

Human flourishing in the context of farm characteristics and occupational hazards - Baseline findings from the FarmCoSwiss cohort.
Introduction and objectives: In Switzerland, little is known about farmers' wellbeing. Based on cross-sectional baseline data from the Swiss agricultural health cohort FarmCoSwiss, we carried out a study to investigate farmers' flourishing i.e. complete wellbeing and ability to thrive - to our knowledge, the first study worldwide to do so -, to descriptively compare it to the general population and to explore its association with farm characteristics and occupational hazards. Methods: Of 1480 self-registered adult farmers recruited as a Swiss-wide convenience sample, 947 individuals (63.9%) signed the informed consent form, and 872 answered the online questionnaire in German, French or Italian at baseline between November 2022 and August 2023. The questionnaire obtained information on, among others, the primary outcome flourishing as assessed by the Secure Flourish Index (SFI) with its s…

Awe predicts well-being via positive attention bias: Evidence from longitudinal and daily diary studies.
Awe is a mixed emotion that is considered important in the protection of well-being during crisis, such as COVID-19. However, there is limited understanding of the long-term and dynamic effects of awe on well-being and the pathways behind these effects. Drawing on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions and the theory of mood-congruent bias, the present study utilized longitudinal and daily diary approaches to investigate the relationship between awe and well-being, as well as the mediating role of attention bias. In longitudinal Study 1, 524 participants (Nfemale = 365, 69.7%), aged from 18 to 72, completed online surveys three times with 1-month intervals. Cross-lagged analyses demonstrated that awe exerted a significant predictive effect on individuals' well-being. Moreover, positive attention bias served as a mediator in this relationship. In diary Study 2, 183 college stud…

An online intervention to increase psychological capital and wellbeing in ageing employees during COVID-19 pandemic.
Findings from a number of studies indicate the importance of employees' psychological resources in coping with stress and maintaining wellbeing. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of an online psychological capital intervention in terms of changes in psychological capital and wellbeing indicators in a group of ageing workers. The intervention consisted of online group workshops conducted among employees aged 50 years and older. Two measurements were taken by 41 participants from the experimental group and 12 participants from the control group at pre-test and at follow-up. Analysis of the results of the study showed that participation in the intervention increased the level of psychological capital, affective balance, satisfaction with life, and decreased depressive symptoms in the experimental group. Although the level of perceived stress was also found to be lower in t…

The association between transition into grandparenthood and Chinese older adults' subjective well-being and health: a longitudinal study.
Background: Due to low birth rates, longer life expectancy, and later childbearing, an increasing number of individuals become grandparents later in life. The transition into grandparenthood-encompassing role acquisition, duration, and role engagement-is crucial for understanding the well-being and health of older adults. However, the connection between this transition and well-being and health outcomes among older adults remains underexplored, particularly in a Chinese context that emphasizes family lineage. This study addresses this gap by analyzing longitudinal data to examine how grandparenthood transitions relate to subjective well-being and health among Chinese older adults. Methods: Using longitudinal data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) 2014-2020, this study investigates the associations between grandparenthood transition -specifically, grandparent role ac…

Priests aging well: The role of gerotranscendence and its relationships with perceived health status, and life satisfaction among Catholic priests.
Aging in the priesthood presents unique challenges in America. Due to the declining number of priests serving the growing U.S. Catholic population, many older priests delay retirement and continue to work while dealing with various physical, mental, and emotional challenges associated with aging. The present study examined predictors of life satisfaction in aging priests, using a combination of established predictors (age, spiritual transcendence, overall health) and three novel predictors corresponding to the three domains of gerotranscendence (cosmic, coherence, solitude) set out by Tornstam (1989, 2005). Survey data collected from 201 ordained Roman Catholic senior priests (between ages 50-93) revealed high levels of life satisfaction and satisfaction that was positively correlated with age, spiritual transcendence, and self-rated health. In addition, the combination of gerotranscende…

Do Virtues Influence Well-Being: The Role of Perceived Stress.
The positive results of life satisfaction among university students have been well studied in the literature. However, the forecasters of the phenomenon have not been thoroughly investigated. In the current study, multiple models were tested to investigate the mediating role of perceived stress in the relationships between virtues and life satisfaction to fill this gap. When testing the model, the effect of demographic variables was controlled. Data were collected through an online survey from a sample of 235 undergraduates. The participants responded to measures of character strengths, perceived stress, and life satisfaction. The findings reveal that perceived stress partially mediates the relationship between leadership, wisdom and life satisfaction controlling for age and gender. The leadership skills of students can be improved, and age and gender should be considered when studying l…

Association of Caregiver Types With General and Health-Related Indicators of Subjective Well-Being in a Longitudinal Cohort of Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China.
Objectives: With the increased demand for care services, understanding how the association between caregiving and subjective well-being varies at different ages becomes a crucial policy concern. This study examined the longitudinal associations between informal caregiving (and different caregiver types) and selected subjective well-being outcomes. Furthermore, gender and household wealth heterogeneity were explored. Methods: Based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data, we used growth curve models to examine how the association between informal caregiving and subjective well-being varies across age. Results: Overall, caregivers reported higher life satisfaction at age 60 compared to non-caregivers, although the positive association between caregiving and life satisfaction becomes weaker and even turns negative as people age. In contrast, caregivers consistently had lo…

Father involvement and child social adjustment: The chain mediating effects of the father-child relationship and mother marital satisfaction.
Father involvement is strongly associated with children's developmental outcomes. We examined the mediating role of the father-child relationship and mother marital satisfaction on the relationship between father involvement and child social adjustment. The participants came from eight kindergartens in six provinces in China and included 573 families. We collected data cross-sectionally using validated measures to assess the direct and indirect effects of father involvement, the father-child relationship, and mother marital satisfaction on child social adjustment using path models, with fathers reporting father involvement and the father-child relationship, and mothers reporting mother marital satisfaction and child social adjustment. The results of the study showed a significant positive correlation between father involvement and child social adjustment. Additionally, father-child confl…

Upward social comparison on social networking sites (SNSs) and individual well-being: a moderated mediation model.
To explore the influence of upward social comparison on social networking sites on individual well-being, as well as the role of envy and nature connectedness, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 1078 college students. The results indicated: (1) upward social comparison on social networking sites had a significant negative effect on well-being; (2) envy played a mediating role in the relationship between upward social comparison on social networking sites and well-being; and (3) nature connectedness moderated the direct effect of upward social comparison on social networking sites on well-being and the mediating effect of envy. The present study revealed the relationship between upward social comparison on SNSs and well-being and its internal mechanism, providing concrete ways to intervene individual well-being in the Internet era.

Looking Back on Career, Looking Forward to Retirement: Antecedents of Subjective Career Evaluations and Their Impact on Retirement Adjustment.
Objectives: An individual's past, and reflections on it, may influence current and future well-being. Recent qualitative studies suggest retirees' recollections about their careers relate to well-being in retirement. We investigated associations between life course events and subjective career evaluations, gender differences in these associations, and their subsequent association with retirement adjustment. Methods: We used data from 3 waves (2015, 2018, and 2023) of the NIDI Pension Panel Study (NPPS), a longitudinal survey of Dutch older workers. Using a sample of 6,109 respondents, we used ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models to investigate associations between employment stability facilitators and inhibitors (e.g., promotion, demotion, unemployment) and personal shocks (e.g., divorce, widowhood) and subjective evaluations of satisfaction with the work and family domains of …
