Personality trait predictors of placebo analgesia and neurobiological correlates.

Personality traits have been shown to interact with environmental cues to modulate biological responses including treatment responses, and potentially having a role in the formation of placebo effects. Workplace based mindfulness practice and inflammation: a randomized trial.

We have developed a low dose Mindfulness-Based Intervention (MBI-ld) that reduces the time committed to meetings and formal mindfulness practice, while conducting the sessions during the workday. This reduced the barriers commonly mentioned for non-participation in mindfulness programs. In a controlled randomized trial we studied university faculty and staff (n=186) who were found to have an elevated CRP level,>3.0 mg/ml, and who either had, or were at risk for cardiovascular disease. This study was designed to evaluate if MBI-ld could produce a greater decrease in CRP, IL-6 and cortisol than an active control group receiving a lifestyle education program when measured at the end of the 2 month interventions. We found that MBI-ld significantly enhanced mindfulness by 2-months and it was maintained for up to a year when compared to the education control. No significant changes were noted

Surgical stress response and postoperative immune function after laparoscopy or open surgery with fast track or standard perioperative care: a randomized trial.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of laparoscopic or open colectomy with fast track or standard perioperative care on patient's immune status and stress response after surgery. Methods: Patients with nonmetastasized colon cancer were randomized to laparoscopic or open colectomy with fast track or standard care. Blood samples were taken preoperatively (baseline), and 1, 2, 24, and 72 hours after surgery. Systemic HLA-DR expression, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, growth hormone, prolactin, and cortisol were analyzed. Results: Nineteen patients were randomized for laparoscopy and fast track care (LFT), 23 for laparoscopy and standard care (LS), 17 for open surgery and fast track care (OFT), and 20 for open surgery and standard care (OS). Patient characteristics were comparable. Mean HLA-DR was 74.8 in the LFT group, 67.1 in the LS group, 52.8 in the OFT group, and 40.7 in the OS group.

The effect of music intervention in stress response to cardiac surgery in a randomized clinical trial.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of bed rest with music on the first postoperative day to decrease stress for patients who have undergone heart surgery. Methods: A repeated-measures randomized controlled trial was used. The study took place in a cardiothoracic intermediary unit of a university hospital in Sweden. Fifty-eight patients who had undergone open coronary artery bypass grafting or aortic valve replacement surgery were included. Stress response was assessed by determining the serum cortisol, heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, arterial oxygen tension, arterial oxygen saturation, and subjective pain and anxiety levels. Intraoperative thoracic epidural anaesthesia attenuates stress-induced immunosuppression in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Expressive writing and post-traumatic stress disorder: effects on trauma symptoms, mood states, and cortisol reactivity.

Objectives: This study investigates the boundary conditions (feasibility, safety, and efficacy) of an expressive writing intervention for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]. Design: Randomized trial with baseline and 3-month follow-up measures of PTSD severity and symptoms, mood states, post-traumatic growth, and (post-only) cortisol reactivity to trauma-related stress. Stress management: a randomized study of cognitive behavioural therapy and yoga.

In this study, a stress management program based on cognitive behavioural therapy principles was compared with a Kundaliniyoga program. A study sample of 26 women and 7 men from a large Swedish company were divided randomly into 2 groups for each of the different forms of intervention; a total of 4 groups. The groups were instructed by trained group leaders and 10 sessions were held with each of groups, over a period of 4 months. Influence of the stress hormone cortisol on fear conditioning in humans: evidence for sex differences in the response of the prefrontal cortex.

Neuroendocrine-associated epigenetic factors in cellular senescence: mechanisms and therapeutic implications.

The Development of Stress Reactivity and Regulation in Children and Adolescents.

Adversity experienced in early life can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health. One pathway in which these effects occur is through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a key physiological stress-mediating system. In this review, we discuss the theoretical perspectives that guide stress reactivity and regulation research, the anatomy and physiology of the axis, developmental changes in the axis and its regulation, brain systems regulating stress, the role of genetic and epigenetics variation in axis development, sensitive periods in stress system calibration, the social regulation of stress (i.e., social buffering), and emerging research areas in the study of stress physiology and development. Understanding the development of stress reactivity and regulation is crucial for uncovering how early adverse experiences influence mental and physical health.

Neuroinflammation and depression: A review.

Some recent clinical and preclinical evidence suggests that neuroinflammation is a key factor that interacts with the three neurobiological correlates of major depressive disorder: depletion of brain serotonin, dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and alteration of the continuous production of adult-generated neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Prenatal stress: Effects on fetal and child brain development.

The impact of stress on brain health begins in the womb. Both animal and human studies have found that prenatal maternal stress affects the brain and behavior of the offspring. Stressful life events, exposure to a natural disaster, and symptoms of maternal anxiety and depression increase the risk for the child having a range of emotional, behavioral and/or cognitive problems in later life. These include depression, anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and/or conduct disorders. There is an increased risk for other outcomes also, including preterm delivery and reduced telomere length, possibly indicative of an accelerated life history. The causal role of prenatal maternal stress on the etiology of the neurodevelopmental disorders is supported by large population cohorts, which have controlled for a wide range of potential confounders, including postnatal maternal mood.

Stress is an adaptative response aimed at restoring body homeostasis. The classical neuroendocrine stress response involving the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis modulates many physiological aspects, such as the wake-sleep cycle. In the present review, we will first report a series of human and rodent studies showing that each actor of the HPA axis has the potential to interfere with sleep homeostasis and, then, we will highlight how acute or chronic stress differently modulates the wake-sleep cycle. Moreover, we will present new and interesting studies dealing with the relationship between sleep and stress on a different (longer) time scale.
