The life of this world is like this: rain that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which humans and animals eat. But when the earth has taken on its finest appearance, and adorns itself, and its people think they have power over it, then the fate We commanded comes to it, by night or by day, and We reduce it to stubble, as if it had not flourished just the day before. This is the way We explain the revelations for those who reflect

Improvement of Interoceptive Processes after an 8-Week Body Scan Intervention.
Objective: Interoceptive processes are defined as ability to detect sensations arising within the body. There is a growing body of research investigating ways of improving interoceptive processes. One promising approach increasing the attention to bodily sensations is the body scan (BS), a method stemming from mindfulness-based stress reduction. Research so far revealed only heterogenous findings of meditational practice and mindfulness-based stress reduction on interoceptive processes. Even more importantly, there is no study considering the effect of an 8-week BS intervention on interoceptive processes and the distinguishable subdomains of interoception. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to examine the effects of a BS intervention on different interoceptive subdomains over 8 weeks of training in two different samples. Methods: In study 1, healthy participants executed a…

Connection to Nature and Psychological Wellbeing: The Role of Mindfulness and Spirituality.
This study examined mindfulness and spirituality as potential explanatory mechanisms underlying the associations between connection to nature and young adults' psychological wellbeing (depression, anxiety, perceived stress, life satisfaction, and positive states of mind). Two studies employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to test these pathways using different conceptualizations and measures of mindfulness and spirituality. Participants (Study 1: N = 219, 69.4% female; Study 2: N = 180, 75% female) completed self-report measures of connection to nature, mindfulness, spirituality, and psychological wellbeing. In Study 1, mindful attention functioned as a significant mediating mechanism reducing anxiety and perceived stress, while mindful awareness mediated reductions in depression and increases in positive states of mind. Conversely, spirituality (life scheme and self-efficacy) was n…

Advancing Pain Care for Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease: Two Innovative Psychological Approaches.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hemoglobin disorder impacting red blood cell and resulting in difficult-to-control pain, which significantly impacts quality of life and psychological wellbeing. There are barriers preventing patients living with SCD from receiving psychological care, and limited work demonstrating best psychological pain care practices. We describe two innovative approaches for incorporating psychological care in two clinics (i.e., pediatric and adult) serving patients living with SCD in a Southeastern United States health system. The first is psychological screening and referral to psychotherapy program. The second is a mindfulness program offering bedside interventions, retreats, and individual sessions. These innovative treatment approaches emphasize adapting psychological care to address care barriers (e.g., access to care, cultural stigma). Adaptable, patient-centered…

Meditation and psychedelics facilitate similar types of mystical, psychological, and philosophical-existential insights predictive of wellbeing: a qualitative-quantitative approach.
Both psychedelic substances and meditation have been proposed to facilitate personally meaningful and transformative experiences, with insights playing a central role. However, previous research has mainly relied on questionnaires, limiting the range of insights that can be identified. In this study, we recruited participants who provided narrative reports of insights in personally meaningful psychedelic (n = 147) or meditation (n = 66) experiences. Psychedelic experiences were facilitated both by classic (e.g., LSD, psilocybin, DMT) as well as non-classic (e.g., MDMA, ketamine, cannabis) psychedelics. Qualitative analysis revealed three main insight themes: Mystical-type (subclasses Unity, Metaphysical, and Other), Psychological (subclasses Metacognitive, Value, and Compassion), and Philosophical-existential (subclasses Purpose, Value, and Other). Mystical-type insights were more freque…

Influence of awe on social responsibility in adolescents and the mediating role of social mindfulness.
Previous research has demonstrated that awe can influence corporate social responsibility; however, the mechanism through which awe affects social responsibility among Chinese adolescents remains unclear. According to the Broaden-and-Build theory of positive emotions, individuals may be prompted to take positive actions, such as enhancing social mindfulness, due to the situational stimuli that evoke their sense of awe. Conversely, these positive actions promote the formation of social responsibility. Thus, the present study aims to explore the impact of awe on adolescents' social responsibility and the mediating role of social mindfulness in this relationship using questionnaire-based and experimental approaches. In Study 1, 1370 adolescents completed the Dispositional Awe Scale, the Social Mindfulness Self-Report Scale and the Social Responsibility Scale. The results revealed that dispo…

The influence of core self-evaluation, mindful awareness, & anger rumination on forgiveness.
Forgiveness is crucial for emotional wellbeing and good mental health. It is therefore important to understand what cognitive processes may promote forgiveness to achieve optimal outcomes for individuals. There is some evidence to suggest that core self-evaluation (CSE) is related to how forgiving an individual may be. However, these studies have shown that this influence may be mediated by other cognitive processes. To date, the combined role of anger rumination and mindfulness as potential mediators has not been considered. This is despite recognized associations with constructs that underly CSE. To address this gap in knowledge, this study aimed to explore the relationship between CSE and forgiveness; considering whether this relationship is mediated by mindfulness and anger rumination. A further contribution to knowledge was that these relationships were considered across the three s…

Developing the Good Physician: The Influence of Role Models in the Development of Virtues and Flourishing in Medical Students.
Objectives: A virtues-based model of character development for training future physicians may lead to increased flourishing in medical students through the influence of exemplary role models. This study aimed to analyze the association between caring virtues and measures of flourishing and to identify facilitators of physician flourishing.
Methods: The authors used data from a 2011 nationally representative sample of 605 US medical students in which caring virtues (mindfulness, empathic compassion, and generosity) were measured using scales at two time points during the students' clinical years. Hypothesizing a mediated influence of role models in students' generosity and flourishing, the authors explored the interrelationship between measures of mindfulness, empathic compassion, and generosity, using latent variables within a structural equation model. Built into the model were paths to…

You are not fully present with me: How own and perceived partner mindfulness shape relationship outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to examine the intrapersonal and interpersonal associations among mindfulness, perceived partner mindfulness, and relationship outcomes in married couples. Mindfulness is a quality of mind that is likely to translate into observable behaviors; thus, individuals may perceive their spouse's tendency to be mindful. Despite this, the link between perceived partner mindfulness and marital outcomes has not yet been explored. In this study, a sample of 115 married couples were recruited to complete a survey that included measures of mindfulness, perceived partner mindfulness, and several marital outcomes (e.g., positive and negative relationship quality, positive conflict communication). A series of actor-partner interdependence models demonstrated that, when accounting for both, perceived partner mindfulness outperformed self-reported mindfulness in terms of their…

Wellbeing and Problematic Smartphone Use: Serial Mediation of Mindfulness and Self-Compassion.
The relationship between wellbeing and Problematic Smartphone Use (PSU) has been explored in the past, however, the role of the potential mediators of this association is a relatively neglected area of research. Therefore, the current study examined mindfulness and self-compassion as mediators of the relationship between wellbeing and PSU in 220 university students. WHO-5 Wellbeing Index, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale- State, Self-Compassion Scale- Short form and Smartphone Addiction Scale- Short version were used for assessing wellbeing, mindfulness, self-compassion, and PSU respectively. Wellbeing had a direct and indirect effect on PSU. In addition, results supported a serial mediation model where wellbeing was found to influence PSU via mindfulness and self-compassion in a sequential manner. The results expanded the Compensatory Internet Use Theory (CIUT) to understand PSU and ha…

Leaders' emotional labour and abusive supervision: The moderating role of mindfulness.
In this study, we examine how leaders' emotional labour strategies (surface acting and deep acting) deplete leaders' self-control resources to predict abusive supervision, in addition to the moderating role of leader mindfulness. Integrating ego-depletion theory and emotion regulation theory, we hypothesise that deep acting and surface acting predict higher levels of abusive supervision, which is mediated by reduced self-control. Furthermore, we predict that leaders' trait mindfulness moderates the relationship between emotional labour and self-control on abusive supervision. Results from a three-wave study of leader-follower dyads supported mediation hypotheses; both deep and surface acting predicted abusive supervision, which is mediated by reduced self-control. Our moderated mediation hypotheses were supported for deep acting but not surface acting. This research contributes to the li…

Work-related resilience, engagement and wellbeing among music industry workers during the Covid-19 pandemic: A multiwave model of mindfulness and hope.
We surveyed workers in the performing arts sector to explore the role of positive mindsets in facilitating work-related resilience, engagement and reduced stress using retrospective reporting surveys during the Covid-19 work shut down period. Integrating conservation of resources theory with research on metacognitive self-regulation, we controlled for the severity of the Covid-19 impact and negative affect and found that hope (but not mindfulness) predicted professional engagement, resiliency and reduced tension and distress over time. Further, the relationships between hope and outcomes were mediated by positive affect (PA). Mindfulness was not indirectly (via PA) related to outcomes (i.e., engagement, resiliency, job tension, distress) but was directly and negatively related to job tension and distress. These findings suggest that in times of intense stress or adversity, future-oriente…

Mindfulness is Associated with Better Sleep Quality in Young Adults by Reducing Boredom and Bedtime Procrastination.
Objective: Bedtime procrastination is a relatively new topic of research and has been found to compromise sleep. Researchers have studied the predictors, but only a few studies have focused on the ways to reduce bedtime procrastination. Mindfulness, a novel variable in this research area, may shed some light on how to decrease bedtime procrastination. This study examined a serial mediation model and hypothesized that the relationship between mindfulness and better sleep quality would be serially mediated by lower levels of boredom and bedtime procrastination.
Methods: This study employed a correlational approach and recruited a sample of 220 participants aged between 17 and 30 (M = 20.34 years, SD = 2.86). In the Qualtrics online survey, participants completed a series of questionnaires measuring mindfulness, boredom, bedtime procrastination, and sleep quality.
Results: The analyses prov…

Tresker S (2022)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usPerspectives in biology and medicine2 citations Consciousness, Placebo Effects, and the Therapeutic Allure of Psychoneuroimmunology.
Since psychoneuroimmunology's (PNI) inception four decades ago, so-called "mind-body" approaches relying on or inspired by PNI have offered the promise of healing various ailments based on the age-old but metaphysically ambiguous principle that the mind can heal the body. How this principle is operationalized not only reveals limitations of PNI-based mind-body therapies but offers a test kit of possibilities for exploring the conceptual foundations of PNI. This article presents an integrative analysis of the role of consciousness-related phenomena (such as willful intentions, thoughts, beliefs) in their causal efficacy, examining their relationships with placebo effects and the boundaries of immune homeostatic control, as well as their therapeutic prospects. Focusing on mindfulness, the article notes how understanding the mechanisms of mindfulness, specifically those mechanisms related t…

Interpersonal mindfulness and forgiveness: Examining the mediating roles of anger rumination and state anger.
Measuring mindfulness without accounting for specific contexts may lead to controversial results. This study attempted to examine whether the newly proposed construct of interpersonal mindfulness, mindfulness as it happens within the interpersonal context, was connected to forgiveness and the mechanisms behind this connection. Data were collected from 312 participants using measures of interpersonal mindfulness, trait mindfulness, anger rumination, state anger, self-reported forgiveness, and forgiving behavior. Results showed that interpersonal mindfulness was significantly associated with both self-reported forgiveness and forgiving behavior even while accounting for trait mindfulness. Mediation analysis revealed that anger rumination and state anger could mediate this link separately and sequentially, but only when trait mindfulness was uncontrolled. When controlling for trait mindfuln…

Sager E (2022)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usJournal of religion and health9 citations Components of Successful Spiritual Care.
The quantifiable health benefits of spiritual practice and religious community have inspired a movement toward addressing religion within health care and medical education, yet biomedical professionals still often avoid this topic (Giordano and Engebretson in Explore 2(3):216--225, 2006; Post et al. in Ann Intern Med 132(7):578, 2000). This is largely due to a lack of clarity on how to ethically engage with diverse spiritual practices and maintain professional boundaries regarding spiritual care. However, a majority of patients desire increased incorporation of spirituality in medical discussions, indicating a deficit in care that must be addressed (Best et al. in Patient Educ Couns 98(11):1320-1328, 2015; Zaidi in AMA J Ethics 20(7), 2018). In this article, I clarify what constitutes successful spiritual care by identifying its key components and major challenges. I then make recommenda…

Reductions in experiential avoidance explain changes in anxiety, depression and well-being after a mindfulness and self-compassion (MSC) training.
Objective: The mindfulness and self-compassion (MSC) protocol has shown efficacy in reducing mental illness symptoms and increasing well-being. However, little is known on how the positive outcomes are produced. This study explores how reductions in experiential avoidance following MSC training may explain changes in the participants' levels of anxiety, depression, and well-being.
Methods: The 8-week protocol-based MSC training was delivered to 50 participants, and pre- to post- intervention changes in anxiety, depression, and well-being were measured. A series of mediation models were conducted, with changes in self-compassion as predictor, changes in experiential avoidance as mediator, and changes in mental health and well-being as outcome variables. Point estimates and bootstrap-corrected 95% confidence intervals were calculated to analyse indirect effects through experiential avoidan…

Resilience in the Ranks: Trait Mindfulness and Self-Compassion Buffer the Deleterious Effects of Envy on Mental Health Symptoms among Public Safety Personnel.
Public safety personnel (PSP) face frequent stressors that increase their risk of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety. In addition to being exposed to potentially traumatic events, PSP trainees may face a compounded risk of developing mental health symptoms, as their training environments are conducive to social comparisons and the resultant painful emotion of envy. Envy is associated with numerous negative health and occupational outcomes. Fortunately, there are several individual difference factors associated with increased emotional regulation, and such factors may offer resilience against the damaging mental health effects of envy. In this study, we examined the interplay between dispositional mindfulness, self-compassion, and dispositional envy in predicting job satisfaction, stress, experience of positive and negative emotions, subjective resilience, and symptoms of depre…
