1101 to 1125 of 1,410Maternal symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety are related to nonresponsive feeding styles in a statewide sample of WIC participants.
Parenting, including nonresponsive feeding styles, has been related to under- or overweight among young children. The relationship between maternal mental health and feeding styles has not been examined. We hypothesized that mothers who report more symptoms of stress, depression, or anxiety report less responsive (e.g. more controlling, indulgent, and uninvolved) feeding styles than mothers who report fewer symptoms of stress, depression, or anxiety. Our analyses included 702 mother-infant pairs from a statewide sample of Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children mothers. We assessed maternal mental health and feeding styles by a telephone survey. After adjusting for potential confounding variables, maternal stress symptomatology was significantly associated with forceful (beta = 0.03; 95% CI = 0.02, 0.05) and uninvolved (OR = 1.4; 95% CI = 1.1, 1.7) feeding…

B, Biointerfaces1 citations The gut microbiome modulates the lipase-mediated digestion of dietary lipid emulsions.
The gut microbiome plays a critical role in host lipid metabolism, yet its influence on the intraluminal processes governing dietary lipid digestion, particularly lipase-mediated hydrolysis at oil-water interfaces, remains poorly understood. In this study, we combined in vivo microbiome modulation in rats with an ex vivo lipolysis model to examine how microbial perturbations affect intestinal lipid digestion. Rats were pretreated for 14 days with either broad-spectrum antibiotics or a prebiotic to induce distinct microbial profiles. Small intestinal luminal contents were collected from the jejunum and used to monitor the ex vivo digestion of coconut oil and olive oil, representing dietary lipids with varying triglyceride chain lengths. Microbial diversity was positively associated with both the rate and extent of lipid digestion. Notably, the prebiotic group showed a 3-4-fold increase in…

Incorporating agricultural by-products into animal diets represents a sustainable strategy to enhance animal health and product quality. Olive leaves, rich in bioactive compounds such as oleuropein, exhibit notable antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with an environmentally friendly, oleuropein-enriched OLE (OLE) on broiler chickens. A total of 480 day-old chicks were randomly assigned to four groups: a control diet - CF (T1), CF + 1 % OLE (T2), CF + 2.5 % OLE (T3), and CF + 0.1 % encapsulated oregano oil (T4, positive control). Over 42 days, growth performance, carcass characteristics, intestinal morphology, foot pad health, and meat quality were assessed. While T4 showed superior growth performance, the 1 % OLE diet significantly improved intestinal morphology and meat quality. A dose-dependent yellow…

Mediating effects of healthy lifestyle factors on associations between mental health and functional outcomes in early adolescence.
Background: Although mental health and healthy lifestyle interventions are associated with functional outcomes in adolescence, the extent to which particular lifestyle factors explain relationships between mental health and outcome are unclear. Here we examined mediating effects of lifestyle factors on relationships between mental health and two functional outcomes measured 2-3 years later, as well as moderating effects of environmental risk factors on mediation strength in early adolescence.
Method: We analyzed data from three waves of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ages 10-11, 11-12, and 12-13 years). Mediating effects of sleep quality, screen time, physical activity, and Mediterranean diet on the relationships between depression, anxiety, psychotic-like experience (PLE) distress, and total problems with two subsequent functional outcomes (academic functioning and so…

Ramadan during pregnancy and the role of dietary intake for neonatal health in Kaduna, Northwestern Nigeria: a cross-sectional study.
Background: Ramadan during pregnancy is associated with adverse offspring health outcomes. Recent evidence from Europe indicates that maternal diet during non-fasting hours might alleviate these effects. This study describes fasting, diet, and sleep habits among pregnant Muslims in Kaduna, Nigeria, and assesses impacts on neonatal health in this setting.
Methods: Between July 2023 and February 2024, we conducted 1814 interviews with women whose pregnancy overlapped with Ramadan 2023 in Kaduna, northwestern Nigeria (cross-sectional study). We used a structured questionnaire to collect data on fasting, diet and sleep during Ramadan, as well as maternal socio-demographic characteristics. In the analyses of birth outcomes, 1370 mother-newborn pairs were included. We performed multivariate regression analyses to evaluate associations between fasting and birth weight and gestational duration, …

Impact of a novel ultra-processed foods and drinks diet on metabolism and behaviour in adolescent female and male rats.
Mental health affections induced by ultra-processed foods (UPF) in humans have been consistently reported. We aim to develop an experimental UPF diet based on typical UPF products consumed by human adolescents and to characterize its impact on health and behaviour in male and female rats. In a first experiment, 30 UPFs were administered, one every day, plus standard chow, compared with rats fed standard chow. In a second experiment, we combined selected UPFs from the first experiment in 4 menus, consisting in 4 solid and 1 liquid item each one. After weaning, 48 rats were divided in 4 groups according to sex and diet. UPF groups were fed the UPF diet, plus standard chow, and STD groups only chow over 6 weeks.UPF feeding induced increased body weight, abdominal circumference and total and visceral adiposity, as well as hyperglycaemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperleptinemia compared to S…

Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet Is Inversely Associated with Anxiety and Stress but Not Depression: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Community-Dwelling Older Australians.
Diet quality may be an important modifiable risk factor for mental health disorders. However, these findings have been inconsistent, particularly in older adults. We explored the independent associations between adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and severity of symptoms related to depression, anxiety and stress in older adults from Australia. This was a cross-sectional analysis of older Australians ≥ 60 years. MedDiet adherence was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to assess the severity of negative emotional symptoms. A total of n = 294 participants were included in the final analyses (70.4 ± 6.2 years). Adherence to a MedDiet was inversely associated with the severity of anxiety symptoms (β = -0.118; CI: -0.761, -0.012; p = 0.043) independent of age, gender, BMI, physical activity,…

Clustering of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and diet associated with social isolation among brazilian adolescents.
Backgound: Although obesogenic behaviors have been found to be related to social isolation, evidence-based person-centered approaches are lacking. This study investigated the association between clusters of obesogenic behavior - derived from a data-driven process - and social isolation among Brazilian adolescents.
Methods: Data from the National Adolescent School-based Health Survey (PeNSE) 2015 were analyzed. A total of 100,794 9th-grade students (51.3% females; 14.3 ± 0.1 years old) enrolled in 3,040 public and private high schools participated in the study. Social isolation was assessed by two outcomes (i.e., perceived loneliness and lack of close friends). A two-step cluster analysis was conducted to identify patterns of obesogenic behaviors with the input of leisure-time physical activity (PA), sitting time as a proxy of sedentary behavior (SB), and the weekly consumption of healthy…

New findings: What is the central question of this study? The consumption of a high-protein diet has been associated with an anxiogenic factor that can influence anxiety and possible cardiovascular changes: does the consumption of a high-protein diet interfere with anxiety, haemodynamics and morphofunctional aspects of the heart of Wistar rats? What is the main finding and its importance? Our study showed that the high-protein diet did not interfere with anxiety and haemodynamics. The animals in the hyperproteic group showed positive heart adaptations characterized by less work and lower heart rate without impairing ejection fraction and systemic blood pressure.

Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, has been reported that it has the potential to regulate depression-like behavior. Meanwhile, Chronic stress-induced depression also has a close relationship with gut microbiota structure and composition. In the current research, we demonstrated that a tryptophan-rich diet (0.6% tryptophan w/w) significantly attenuated depression- and anxiety-like behaviors in a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-treated mouse model. Tryptophan supplementation improved neuroinflammation, increased expression of BDNF, and improved mitochondrial energy metabolism in the brain of CUMS-treated mice. Besides, CUMS also enhanced the kynurenine pathway, but repressed the serotonin pathway and indole pathway of tryptophan metabolism, leading to a decrease in 5-HT and indole in serum, whereas tryptophan supplementation might shift the tryptophan metabolism more toward the…

The impact of a poverty reduction intervention on infant brain activity.
Early childhood poverty is a risk factor for lower school achievement, reduced earnings, and poorer health, and has been associated with differences in brain structure and function. Whether poverty causes differences in neurodevelopment, or is merely associated with factors that cause such differences, remains unclear. Here, we report estimates of the causal impact of a poverty reduction intervention on brain activity in the first year of life. We draw data from a subsample of the Baby's First Years study, which recruited 1,000 diverse low-income mother-infant dyads. Shortly after giving birth, mothers were randomized to receive either a large or nominal monthly unconditional cash gift. Infant brain activity was assessed at approximately 1 y of age in the child's home, using resting electroencephalography (EEG; n = 435). We hypothesized that infants in the high-cash gift group would have…

Fasting-Mimicking Diet Reduces Trimethylamine N-Oxide Levels and Improves Serum Biochemical Parameters in Healthy Volunteers.
Elevated plasma levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) have been proposed as a diet-derived biomarker of cardiometabolic disease risk. Caloric restriction is the most common dietary intervention used to improve cardiometabolic health; however, novel trends suggest a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) as a more feasible alternative. FMD is a variation of intermittent fasting, based on caloric restriction and limitation of protein sources of animal origin, applied in daily cycles during a 5-day period. As TMAO is intensively produced by gut microbiota after the consumption of animal-derived products, we aim to investigate whether a 5-day FMD affects plasma TMAO levels and markers of metabolic health. To investigate whether an increase in vegetable intake possesses similar effects on TMAO levels and metabolic parameters, healthy volunteers (n = 24) were subjected to a 5-day FMD and 19 volunteers…

Protective effects of black seed (Nigella sativa) diet supplementation in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) against immune depression, oxidative stress and metabolism dysfunction induced by glyphosate.
Sustainable aquaculture arises as key to increase food production in the coming years. However, the sector still faces many challenges such as the exposure of the cultured animals to pesticide-contaminated water. Pesticides used in agriculture can reach aquaculture systems either directly (integrated-agriculture aquaculture practices) or indirectly (soil leakage) and cause a broad range of ecotoxicological effects on cultured fish and shellfish. Here, we studied how glyphosate affects several haematological, biochemical, and immune parameters in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fingerlings, the fourth most important cultured fish species worldwide. We also evaluated the potential of dietary supplementation with black seed (Nigella sativa, 0.25, 0.5 and 1%) to lower glyphosate-associated toxicity. Our results showed that 14-day sub-lethal exposure of common carp fingerlings to glyphosate inc…
