Bridges across the intergenerational transmission of attachment gap.
Attachment is transmitted from one generation to the next. Adult attachment has been shown to predict the security or insecurity of children's attachment relationship with their parents. In search for the mechanism of intergenerational transmission of attachment sensitive parenting has been the main focus of research during the past four decades. Meta-analytic work confirmed the role of sensitive parenting, but a large explanatory gap remains to be explained. Parental mentalization has not yet fulfilled its promise as a bridge across the transmission gap. Here we suggest a model of intergenerational transmission that includes context and differential susceptibility, and we argue that the concept of parenting should be broadened to include autonomy support, limit-setting, protective parenting, parental warmth, and repair of mismatches.

Enhancing Father Involvement in Low-Income Families: A Couples Group Approach to Preventive Intervention.
To address the problem of fathers' absence from children's lives and the difficulty of paternal engagement, especially among lower income families, government agencies have given increasing attention to funding father involvement interventions. Few of these interventions have yielded promising results. Father involvement research that focuses on the couple/coparenting relationship offers a pathway to support fathers' involvement while strengthening family relationships. Relevant research is reviewed and an exemplar is provided in the Supporting Father Involvement intervention and its positive effects on parental and parent-child relationships and children's outcomes. The article concludes with policy implications of this choice of target populations and the need to develop new strategies to involve fathers in the lives of their children.

More than 10% of fathers experience depression and anxiety during the perinatal period, but paternal perinatal depression (PPND) and anxiety have received less attention than maternal perinatal mental health problems. Few mainstream treatment options are available for men with PPND and anxiety. The aim of this literature review was to summarize the current understanding of PPND and the treatment programs specifically designed for fathers with perinatal depression. Fathers' Roles in the Care and Development of Their Children: The Role of Pediatricians.
Fathers' involvement in and influence on the health and development of their children have increased in a myriad of ways in the past 10 years and have been widely studied. The role of pediatricians in working with fathers has correspondingly increased in importance. This report reviews new studies of the epidemiology of father involvement, including nonresidential as well as residential fathers. The effects of father involvement on child outcomes are discussed within each phase of a child's development. Particular emphasis is placed on (1) fathers' involvement across childhood ages and (2) the influence of fathers' physical and mental health on their children. Implications and advice for all child health providers to encourage and support father involvement are outlined.

Health disparities in the United States related to socioeconomic status are persistent and pervasive. This review highlights how social disadvantage, particularly low socioeconomic status and the health burden it brings, is passed from 1 generation to the next. First, we review current frameworks for understanding the intergenerational transmission of health disparities and provide 4 illustrative examples relevant to child health, development, and well-being. Second, the leading strategy to break the cycle of poverty in young families in the United States, the 2-generation approach, is reviewed. Are parenting interventions effective in improving the relationship between mothers and their preterm infants?
Aim: To systematically review the efficacy of parenting interventions in improving the quality of the relationship between mothers and preterm infants.
Method: Randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials (RCT) of parenting interventions for mothers of preterm infants where mother-infant relationship quality outcomes were reported. Databases searched: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science.
Results: Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria, 14 with strong methodological quality. Eight parenting interventions were found to improve the quality of the mother-preterm infant relationship.
Conclusions: Heterogeneity of the interventions calls for an integrated new parenting program focusing on cue-based, responsive care from the mother to her preterm infant to improve the quality of the relationship for these mother-preterm infant dyads.

Sleep in the family.
Family systems are dynamic, with reciprocal interactions among family members. When children have sleep problems, they often awaken a parent, affecting parent sleep and subsequent parent daytime functioning. Child sleep patterns can also be disrupted by parent cognitions related to the child's sleep, as well as when parents are experiencing external stressors (eg, work or marital problems). This article focuses on sleep in a family context, reviewing the relationship between sleep among children and their parents from infancy to adolescence. Sleep in the family when a child has a chronic illness or development disorder is also reviewed.

Self-help parenting interventions for childhood behaviour disorders: a review of the evidence.
The use of self-help interventions for parents of children with behaviour problems is becoming more prevalent. This review critically evaluated the evidence supporting the efficacy of such programmes for children with behaviour problems. Using a systematic literature search, two modes of delivery were evaluated, namely bibliotherapy and multimedia. Programmes that included minimal therapist support were also included. Overall, there is good evidence supporting the efficacy of self-help programmes in improving child behaviour, over the short and longer term. Self-help programmes led to outcomes similar to those achieved with more intensive therapist input. Including minimal levels of therapist support in addition to self-help materials enhances child and parent outcomes. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): advances and applications with children, adolescents, and families.
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is part of a growing body of literature of "third-wave" behavioral therapy that finds its roots in the development of mindfulness. ACT for adults has gained empirical support across a broad range of psychiatric disorders and behavioral health issues, yet the literature looking at the adaptation of ACT for youth populations is still nascent. This article provides an outline of key components of ACT, a brief overview of the history and development of ACT, adaptations for children, the theoretical underpinnings of ACT, assessment and therapy, and a review of the evidence-based literature to date.

Objective: To present an integrated literature review on maternal parental self-efficacy (MPSE) in the postpartum period.
Data sources: A literature search of CINAHL with full text and MEDLINE and PsycINFO from their start dates to February 2010.
Study selection: Inclusion criteria were English written research articles which reported the measurement of MPSE in the postpartum period.
Data extraction: Articles were reviewed based on purpose, theoretical framework, data collection method, sample, main findings and nursing implications for maternal parenting. In addition, data related to the instruments that were used to measure MPSE were included.
