Go with this shirt of mine and cast it upon the face of my father so that he may come to seeing. Joseph said, " Take my shirt to Jacob, for his pain has not ceased from the time he saw the shirt stained with the wolf's blood. The balm will also be my shirt. " When they took the shirt from Egypt, the morning breeze was commanded to take the shirt's scent to Jacob's nostrils so that, before Joseph's messenger could give the good news, he would receive it from the Real's mes- senger and recognize the Real's perfect gentleness and favor toward him. Among the people are some who take peers apart from God, loving them as if loving God. And those who have faith are more intense in love for God. If this were the only verse in the whole Qur'an about the faithful and God's friends, their eminence and honor would be complete, for the Lord of the Worlds is saying, “They love Me intensely and more completely than the unbelievers love their objects of worship.” Do you not see that every once in a while the unbelievers set up another idol and take up another object of worship. Like poor people, they are content with something carved of wood. Then, when they can, they take down the wooden one and make another from silver or gold. If their love for their object of wor- ship is real, why do they turn away from it toward another? They say that a man met a woman recognizer, and her beauty exercised its influence over his heart. Neighborhood safety, socioeconomic status, and physical activity in older adults.

Background: Neighborhood environment can have a substantial influence on the level of physical activity among older adults. Yet, the moderating influence of various measures of SES on the association between perceived neighborhood safety and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among older adults remains unknown. Purpose: The study was designed to investigate the association between perceived neighborhood safety and LTPA in a nationally representative sample of older adults, and to evaluate SES characteristics as potential effect modifiers in the association between perceived neighborhood safety and LTPA. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the 2004 Health and Retirement Study of older adults aged >or=50 years were used to examine the association between perceived neighborhood safety and LTPA. The physical activity transition.

Physical activity is important for the prevention of chronic disease morbidity and mortality, and the lack of adequate levels of physical activity represents a growing public health burden around the world. The purpose of this report is to introduce the concept of the "Physical Activity Transition" and to explore the potential effects that declining physical activity levels may play on health and life expectancy as countries undergo economic and demographic changes. Physical activity is related to mortality rates in humans, and the available evidence suggests that the adoption of a lifestyle characterized by lower levels of physical activity will attenuate the expected gains in life expectancy associated with the epidemiological transition. Advances in the measurement of physical activity at work, in the home, for transport, and in leisure time in a wide variety of populations will be in

Loneliness predicts reduced physical activity: cross-sectional & longitudinal analyses.

Objective: To determine cross-sectional and prospective associations between loneliness and physical activity, and to evaluate the roles of social control and emotion regulation as mediators of these associations. Design: A population-based sample of 229 White, Black, and Hispanic men and women, age 50 to 68 years at study onset, were tested annually for each of 3 years. Main outcome measures: Physical activity probability, and changes in physical activity probability over a 3-year period. Results: Replicating and extending prior cross-sectional research, loneliness was associated with a significantly reduced odds of physical activity (OR = 0.65 per SD of loneliness) net of sociodemographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity, education, income), psychosocial variables (depressive symptoms, perceived stress, hostility, social support), and self-rated health. This association was mediated b

Changes in BMI and blood pressure after a school based intervention: the CHILDREN study.

Background: Identification of the behavioural, normative and control beliefs influencing children's behaviour is an important prerequisite in designing effective interventions. The current study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention program, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), on obesity indices and blood pressure (BP) in Ioannina, Greece. Methods: Participants were 646 fifth grade pupils (360 girls and 286 boys). The intervention group (IG) consisted of 321 children in 13 randomly selected schools while the rest (n = 325 children) served as the control group (CG). Based on the outcome of the TPB questionnaire, the intervention focused on overcoming the barriers in accessing physical activity areas, increasing the availability of fruits and vegetables and increasing parental support. General linear mixed model and mediating variable analysis were used to evalu

The long-term relationship between high-intensity volunteering and physical activity in older African American women.

Objectives: Experience Corps (EC) places older volunteers in public elementary schools in 20 cities across the country. The EC program in Baltimore is a health promotion intervention designed to improve the academic outcomes of children and increase older adult volunteer physical activity. We sought to determine if there were sustained increases in physical activity with participation in EC. Methods: Seventy-one African American women volunteers in the Baltimore EC were compared with 150 African American women in the Women's Health and Aging Studies (WHAS) I and II; all were aged 65-86 years with comparable Social Economic Status, frailty, and self-reported health status. Using a regression model, we evaluated physical activity adjusting for a propensity score and time of follow-up over 3 years. Results: EC volunteers reported a sustained increase in physical activity as compared with th

Individual, social, environmental, and physical environmental correlates with physical activity among Canadians: a cross-sectional study.

Background: The identification of various individual, social and physical environmental factors affecting physical activity (PA) behavior in Canada can help in the development of more tailored intervention strategies for promoting higher PA levels in Canada. This study examined the influences of various individual, social and physical environmental factors on PA participation by gender, age and socioeconomic status, using data from the 2002 nationwide survey of the Physical Activity Monitor. Methods: In 2002, 5,167 Canadians aged 15-79 years, selected by random-digit dialling from household-based telephone exchanges, completed a telephone survey. The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to collect information on total physical activity. Parents report intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental barriers to supporting healthy eating and physical activity among their preschoolers.

There is an increasing trend in childhood obesity in Canada and many preschool children are overweight or obese. The objective of this study was to explore parents' experiences and challenges in supporting healthy eating and physical activity among their preschool children. A qualitative descriptive study involving 5 focus groups was conducted. A convenience sample of 39 parents from 3 childcare centres in Hamilton, Ontario, participated. Parents were English speaking and had a child aged 2-5 years attending the childcare centre for at least 3 months. The research team read transcripts of the audio-taped sessions and used a constant comparison approach to develop themes, which involved coding comments by continually referring to previously coded comments for comparison. The social ecological model was used to organize the themes into 3 higher-level categories: (i) intrapersonal (individu

Gender differences in depression and anxiety across the adult lifespan: the role of psychosocial mediators.

Background: There is robust epidemiological and clinical evidence that a greater number of women than men experience depression and anxiety. This study investigated a number of socio-demographic, health and lifestyle, psychological and social factors as possible mediators for the gender difference in depression and anxiety in three cohorts (20-24, 40-44, 60-64). Methods: Responses were from a representative, community based survey (n = 7,485) conducted in Canberra and Queanbeyan (NSW), in Australia. Depression and anxiety were measured using the self-report Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scales. The analyses initially identified gender differences in the potential mediators, followed by univariate and multivariate mediation models. Results: The results indicated several shared mediators for depression and anxiety across the three age groups including: childhood adversity, mastery, behav

Daily total physical activity level and premature death in men and women: results from a large-scale population-based cohort study in Japan (JPHC study).

Purpose: The impact of daily total physical activity level on premature deaths has not been fully clarified in non-Western, relatively lean populations. We prospectively examined the association between daily total physical activity level (METs/day) and subsequent risk of all-cause mortality and mortalities from cancer, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Methods: A total of 83,034 general Japanese citizens ages 45-74 years who responded to the questionnaire in 1995-1999 were followed for any cause of death through December 2005. Mutlivariate-adjusted hazard ratios were calculated with a Cox proportional hazards model controlling for potential confounding factors. Results: During follow-up, a total of 4564 deaths were recorded. Compared with subjects in the lowest quartile, increased daily total physical activity was associated with a significantly decreased risk of all-cause mor

Overweight is associated with decreased cognitive functioning among school-age children and adolescents.

Objective: Childhood overweight and obesity have increased substantially in the past two decades, raising concerns about their psychosocial and cognitive consequences. We examined the associations between academic performance (AP), cognitive functioning (CF), and increased BMI in a nationally representative sample of children. Methods and procedures: Participants were 2,519 children aged 8-16 years, who completed a brief neuropsychological battery and measures of height and weight as a part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a cross-sectional survey conducted between 1988 and 1994. Z-scores were calculated for each neuropsychological test, and poor performance was defined as z-score <2. Results: The association between BMI and AP was not significant after adjusting for parental/familial characteristics. However, the associations between CF remained significant

Contribution of neighbourhood socioeconomic status and physical activity resources to physical activity among women.

Introduction: Residence in a deprived neighbourhood is associated with lower rates of physical activity. Little is known about the manifestation of deprivation that mediates this relationship. This study aimed to investigate whether access to physical activity resources mediated the relationship between neighbourhood socioeconomic status and physical activity among women. Method: Individual data from women participating in the Stanford Heart Disease Prevention Program (1979-90) were linked to census and archival data from existing records. Multilevel regression models were examined for energy expenditure and moderate and vigorous physical activity as reported in physical activity recalls. Results: After accounting for individual-level socioeconomic status, women who lived in lower-socioeconomic status neighbourhoods reported greater energy expenditure, but undertook less moderate physica

Socio-ecological correlates of exercise procrastination and exercise addiction: a preliminary exploratory study using a single-university sample.

Exercise procrastination and exercise addiction reflect two maladaptive patterns at opposite ends of the physical-activity spectrum, yet their socio-ecological correlates among university students remain unclear. We surveyed 570 Chinese university students (mean age = 19.15 ± 1.09 years) and assessed exercise procrastination using the Procrastination in Exercise Scale (PES) and exercise addiction using the Revised Exercise Addiction Inventory (EAI-R). Candidate predictors were drawn from individual characteristics, health behaviors, and interpersonal network factors. To accommodate a relatively large predictor set, we applied LASSO regression with 10-fold cross-validation (λ_min) and evaluated robustness using 1,000 bootstrap resamples and 1,000 repetitions of random 10-fold cross-validation, emphasizing predictors retained in the primary models and consistently selected across both sens

The influence of circadian rhythm disruption during Ramadan on metabolic responses to physical activity: a pilot study.

Background: Circadian rhythms and sleep patterns are important regulators of metabolic health. During Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF), the sleep-wake cycles are often disrupted, which can affect physical activity (PA) and related metabolic responses. Limited knowledge is available on how sleep disruption influences PA in the general population during RIF. This pilot study aimed to examine the metabolic responses to moderate PA under normal and disrupted sleep patterns during RIF. Methods: A pilot study was conducted on 12 participants comprising of individuals with normal (n = 5) and disrupted sleep patterns (n = 7). Blood samples were collected, and measurements of clinical traits, cytokines, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and metabolic profiles were performed before and after intervention. Active futures: combating youth sedentary lifestyles in Pakistan through smart use of fragmented time.

Sedentary behavior among adolescents is a growing concern globally, including in Pakistan, due to its association with negative physical and psychological health outcomes. Fragmented time agility training has arisen as a prospective solution to tackle these challenges. The proposed work evaluates the impact of a structured six-week agility training protocol on sedentary behavior, mood, and stress among adolescents aged 12-18 in Pakistan. A total of 100 participants (50 intervention, 50 control) were recruited from three schools in Islamabad, with equal representation of males and females. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group that completed daily 30-min agility training sessions (including high-knee running, lateral shuffles, and cone drills, five days a week) or a control group that maintained their usual routines. Embodied Prevention.

Evidence-based recommendations for lifestyles to promote healthy cognitive aging (exercise, education, non-smoking, balanced diet, etc.) root in reductionistic studies of mostly physical measurable factors with large effect sizes. In contrast, most people consider factors like autonomy, purpose, social participation and engagement, etc. as central to a high quality of life in old age. Evidence for a direct causal impact of these factors on healthy cognitive aging is still limited, albeit not absent. Ultimately, however, individual lifestyle is a complex composite of variables relating to both body and mind as well as to receiving input and generating output. The physical interventions are tied to the more subjective and mind-related aspects of lifestyle and wellbeing in the idea of the "embodied mind," which states that the mind is shaped by and requires the body. The causality is recipr

Adverse effects of COVID-19-related lockdown on pain, physical activity and psychological well-being in people with chronic pain.

Countries across the world imposed lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been proposed that lockdown conditions, including social and physical distancing measures, may disproportionately impact those living with chronic pain and require rapid adaptation to treatment and care strategies. Using an online methodology, we investigated how lockdown restrictions in the United Kingdom impacted individuals with chronic pain (N = 431) relative to a healthy control group (N = 88). Data were collected during the most stringent period of lockdown in the United Kingdom (mid-April to early-May 2020). In accordance with the fear-avoidance model, we hypothesised lockdown-related increases in pain and psychological distress, which would be mediated by levels of pain catastrophising. Responses indicated that people with chronic pain perceived increased pain severity, compared to their
