Qur'ān 9:60English sense: needy, poor | Arabic sense:

Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise

If you give charity openly, it is good, but if you keep it secret and give to the needy in private, that is better for you, and it will atone for some of your bad deeds: God is well aware of all that you do

though now you are called upon to give [a little] for the sake of God, some of you are grudging. Whoever is grudging is so only towards himself: God is the source of wealth and you are the needy ones. He will substitute other people for you if you turn away, and they will not be like you

Qur'ān 2:177English sense: needy | Arabic sense:

Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God

Qur'ān 2:215English sense: needy | Arabic sense:

The freewill offerings are for the poor, and the indigent.... and the son of the road.... O you whose heart has never for one day walked in poverty and who, in your whole life, have never for one hour sat like Jacob in poverty's house of sorrows! O you who have never for one day placed your own attributes with the description of poverty in the mangonel of struggle and never for an instant sacrificed your spirit in the cave of exile and the state of indigence by following the beloved Prophet and the sincerely truthful Abū Bakr. You suppose that without tasting the drink of poverty and wearing the clothes of discipline today you will dwell tomorrow in the domiciles of the High Chambers with the poor among the Companions and the men of the road of poverty. Your supposition is erroneous and your self-governance wrong. They were a thousand times more passionate about that poverty of theirs th

The voluntary almsgivings the alms to be dispensed are only for the poor who cannot find anything to suffice them in the least and the needy who cannot find anything to suffice them and those who work with them that is with these alms in other words the one who collects them the one who takes the oaths from those who claim them the slave to be manumitted by contract as well as the tax-summoner; and those whose hearts are to be reconciled so that they might become Muslims or that Islam might be firmly established or that their peers might become Muslims or that they might defend Muslims all of whom are classed according to different categories. According to al-Shāfi‘ī may God be pleased with him the first and the last of these categories are no longer given of the alms-tax today because of the established power of Islam; in contrast the other two categories are given of the alms-tax accor

(If ye publish your almsgiving) [2:271]. Said al-Kalbi: When the saying of Allah, exalted is He, (And whatsoever good thing ye spend) [2:272], the Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is giving alms in secret better or giving it in the open? In response Allah revealed this verse.

And God is the Unneedy, and you are the poor. God has no need for your obedience, and you are the poor toward His mercy. God is the Unneedy and has no need for anyone. He is One and has no associate or partner. He is the Compeller, and no one has the color of union with Him. He is the Owner of the Kingdom, and no matter what He does, no one has the gall to protest or a way to fight. If you were to gather all the deeds of the sincerely truthful among the folk of the earth and all the obedient acts of the holy ones of heaven, they would not have the weight of a gnat's wing in the scales of the majesty of the Possessor of Majesty. Beware! Never look at your own distracted deeds or your own tiny intellect with the eye of self-admiration. When you seek Him, seek Him through His bounty, not your intellect and knowledge. Were it not for God's bounty toward you, and His mercy, none of you would

Piety is not that you turn your faces to the east and the west. Rather, piety is he who has faith in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets; who gives wealth despite lov- ing it to kinsfolk, orphans, the indigent, the son of the road, beggars, and slaves; and who per- forms the prayer and gives the alms tax; those who are loyal to their covenant when they make a covenant; those who are patient in misfortune, hardship, and moments of peril. It is they who have been truthful, and it is they who are the godwary. You have learned what the Shariah stipulates in terms of the outward meaning of this verse. Now listen to the inner meaning in the tongue of allusion and recognize the signs of the Haqiqah, for the Haqiqah is to the Shariah as the spirit is to the body. What is a body without a spirit? Such is the Shariah without the Haqiqah. The Shariah is the house of the servit

They ask thee what they should expend. Say: “Whatever good you expend should be for parents and kinsmen, orphans, the indigent, and the son of the road.” And whatever good you do, God knows it. Throwing away money in the path of the Shariah is beautiful, but it is not like throwing away the spirit in the field of the Haqiqah and becoming separate from all others at the moment of contem- plation. Keeping to the stipulation of loyalty is beautiful, but not as much as becoming separate from self and stepping onto the carpet of limpidness. Someone asks, “What should we do with our property? How should we spend it?” The Shariah answers, “From 200 dirhams, 5 dirhams; from 20 dinars, one-half dinar.” Someone else asks and the Haqiqah answers, “You will not be with Him along with body and spirit.” Yes, the story of the wage-earners is one thing, the story of the recognizers something else. Residential Mobility, Housing Instability, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and the Moderating Role of Neighborhood Contexts.

Housing instability, particularly frequent residential moves, has been associated with poor developmental outcomes, yet its relationship with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) remains insufficiently understood at the national level. This study addresses this gap by investigating how frequent moves shape children's exposure to ACEs, and whether community and household contexts influence these effects. Using the 2020-2021 National Survey of Children's Health data, we ask two questions: (1) Do children who experience frequent moves face greater risk of ACEs? and (2) Do neighborhood and metropolitan contexts mitigate or exacerbate this association? Our contribution is twofold. First, we examine both directions of the relationship: how ACEs predict frequent moves and how frequent moves increase ACE exposure. Second, we incorporate contextual moderators, including supportive neighborhoods,

Harshness Predicts Reproduction in Brazilian Municipalities and US Counties: A Life History Theory Approach.

Psychosocial acceleration theory (PAT) posits that harsh and unpredictable ecologies during childhood can cue humans into developing earlier and more frequent reproduction. This study tested whether variables measuring harsh and unpredictable circumstances in 4,135 Brazilian municipalities and in 2,763 US counties would predict reproductive behavior 10 to 14 years later. Data was extracted from the Brazilian Census and American Community Survey samples. A secondary analysis explored whether the percentage of visible minorities (Black and Indigenous population) would also be a predictor or mediator of the same outcomes. Partial least squares structural equation modeling and multivariate linear regression were used in the analysis of Brazil and US data, respectively. Municipalities with higher rates of lack of resources, with young mothers both married or separated, and with large families

Learning from community narratives about the COVID-19 pandemic in Papua New Guinea.

In this paper we use constructivism to explore community members' accounts of how socio-cultural and behavioral factors provided meaning to the COVID-19 pandemic in Papua New Guinea, adherence to "niupela pasin" (new normal), and vaccination acceptance. We purposively selected 50 participants including community members, leaders, and church representatives for semi-structured interviews from urban and rural areas of Madang and Eastern Highlands Provinces. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings showed how people applied risk prevention strategies and actively sought localized solutions to deal with the pandemic. The pandemic also disrupted socio-cultural norms, such as communal gatherings, care for the sick, and attending funerals, leading to distress and interruptions of interpersonal relationships and extended family structures. Social Interactions and Self-Reported Health Among Resettled Refugees.

The goal of this research is to investigate the relationship between social interactions and self-reported mental and physical health of resettled refugees. Social relationships and interactions consist of different layers extending from individual personal relations to social networking activities to collective engagement. Using data from a public opinion survey of recently resettled Bhutanese and Rohingya refugees in Michigan (N=352), we find that along with their socioeconomic situations, such as employment, social integration is an important determinant of mental and physical health. Resettled refugees tend to report better health if they are more socially engaged. This study contributes to the literature on refugee resettlement and integration through a quantitative analysis of a variety of measures of social interactions and their relationship to resettled refugee health. Delay in timing of first antenatal care utilisation among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa: a multilevel mixed effect analysis.

Background: Several studies in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere have affirmed the importance of community-level factors in influencing maternal health seeking behaviour. However, literature shows no uniform pattern in terms of how contextual-level factors influence delay in seeking antenatal care service in different parts of the region. The association of contextual factors and timing of antenatal care is not well documented at regional level. Thus, this study was conducted to examine how community-level characteristics influence decision not to initiate antenatal care in the first trimester. Regional-level analyses of antenatal care utilisation in sub-Saharan Africa are important because they help identify geographic disparities in access and utilisation of the service. Thus, allowing for targeted interventions to improve maternal health outcomes. Methods: Data from the most recent Dem

Impact of child marriage on adolescents' health and socioeconomic development: an essay on Ethiopian perspective.

Early marriage is a worldwide health concern that is prevalent in Southern Asia, South America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Early marriage has been associated with numerous adverse outcomes, including an increased risk of unintended pregnancy, poor economic status, discontinuation of education, sexually transmitted infections, higher divorce rates, adverse pregnancy outcomes, maternal and child mortality, and various negative physical and social consequences for young women and their children. Child marriage in Ethiopia is one of the highest rates in the world. Although the country has shown an overall reduction in the prevalence of child marriage, the problem is still striking and demands the attention of all stakeholders who are working on children's and adolescents' health and well-being. The most challenging side of early marriage in Ethiopia is that it is linked with a diverse and highl

Prevalence and correlates of anxiety and depression among ever-married reproductive-aged women in Bangladesh: national-level insights from the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey.

Background: The sound mental health of reproductive-aged women is crucial for overall maternal and child well-being. However, mental health aspects are historically overlooked in low- and lower-middle-income countries, including Bangladesh. National-level evidence on common mental disorders like anxiety and depression among reproductive-aged women is limited in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression among ever-married reproductive-aged women in Bangladesh and examine their individual, marital, household, and contextual correlates. Methods: We used data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2022 that collected anxiety and depression data using GAD-7 and PHQ-9 modules, respectively. This study included a total of 19,987 ever-married women aged 15 to 49 years. We used a cluster-adjusted multivariable logistic regression model

Racialised Immigrant Health: The Association Between Previous Documentation Status and Self-Reported Health Among Immigrants With Lawful Permanent Resident Status.

Despite a growing body of research about the negative impacts of an unlawful documentation status on immigrants' wellbeing, limited studies have examined immigrants' documentation status from a dynamic perspective. This study analyses data from the New Immigrant Survey to investigate the relationships between racial-ethnic identity, exposure to a precarious documentation status, and self-rated health. Using linear probability and inverse probability weighted models, this study finds that having been previously in a precarious documentation status and spending more years in this circumstance are associated with poorer self-rated health at the baseline survey period (2003). In the follow-up period (2007-2009), the relationship between previous individual-level exposure to a precarious documentation status and self-rated health attenuated and became statistically insignificant after control

Economics of widowhood mortality in adult women in India.

The economic consequence of widowhood on health is well-established, demonstrating that economic factors can significantly link with health outcomes, even the risk of mortality for widows. However, empirical evidence is restricted only to developed countries. Thus, this study assesses the role of economic factors (paid work, pension and household economic status) on the mortality of widows in broad age groups in India. We used two waves of the India Human Development Survey (IHDS), a nationally representative prospective dataset in India for 42,009 women (married and widows) aged 25 years and above at IHDS wave 1 whose survival status was observed between two waves. Further, 6,953 widows were considered for sub-sample analysis in this study. Assessing child development scores among minority and Indigenous language versus dominant language speakers: a cross-sectional analysis of national Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys.

Background: Multiple studies have highlighted the inequities minority and Indigenous children face when accessing health care. Health and wellbeing are positively impacted when Indigenous children are educated and receive care in their maternal language. The associations of socioeconomic status, social activities, and loneliness with depressive symptoms in adults aged 50 years and older across 24 countries: findings from five prospective cohort studies.

Background: Depression is the leading cause of mortality among mental health disorders. Evidence about the associations of socioeconomic status, social activities, and loneliness with depression is scarce. We aimed to identify whether social activities and loneliness mediate the association between socioeconomic status and depression, and the extent of interactive or joint relationships between social activities, loneliness, and socioeconomic status on depression. Methods: In this population-based, cross-national cohort study we used data from five nationally representative surveys across 24 countries between Feb 15, 2008, and Feb 27, 2019: the Health and Retirement Study (HRS); the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA); the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE); the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS); and the Mexican Health and Ageing Study

Assessment of adherence to treatment recommendations among patients with heart failure: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic condition characterized by significant impairment of the cardiovascular system, leading to a decline in health-related quality of life, recurrent hospitalizations, and increased mortality risk. It poses a substantial challenge for modern medicine, particularly when patients fail to adhere to therapeutic recommendations. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the level of adherence to therapeutic guidelines among patients with HF and identify factors influencing adherence levels. Methods: The study comprised 105 HF patients admitted to the cardiology department. A diagnostic survey approach was utilized, employing the Adherence in Chronic Diseases Scale (ACDS) along with a self-developed questionnaire. Results: The findings revealed that 39.05% of participants exhibited a moderate level of adherence to therapeutic recommendations, while 3
