And when the awe the fear departed from Abraham and the good tiding came to him of a child he began to plead with Us pleading with Our messengers concerning the matter of the people of Lot.
Then when the fear had gone away from (the mind of) Ibrahim, and the glad tidings had reached him, he began to plead with Us (Our messengers) for the people of Lut (74)Verily, Ibrahim was, without doubt, forbearing, used to invoke Allah with humility, and was repentant (75)"O Ibrahim! Forsake this. Indeed, the commandment of your Lord has gone forth. Verily, there will come a torment for them which cannot be turned back. (76) The Dispute of Ibrahim over the People of Lut Allah, the Exalted, informs of what happened after the fright of Ibrahim left him and he felt no more fear of the angels when they refused to eat. After this, they gave him the glad tidings of the birth of a son and the destruction of the people of Lut. When they told him of this, he spoke to them as Sa'id bin Jubayr narrated concerning this verse. Sa'id said: When Jibril and the other angels who were with him came to

Treatment of acute stress disorder: a randomized controlled trial.: Context: Recent trauma survivors with acute stress disorder (ASD) are likely to subsequently develop chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cognitive behavioral therapy for ASD may prevent PTSD, but trauma survivors may not tolerate exposure-based therapy in the acute phase. There is a need to compare nonexposure therapy techniques with prolonged exposure for ASD. Objective: To determine the efficacy of exposure therapy or trauma-focused cognitive restructuring in preventing chronic PTSD
Cortisol augmentation of a psychological treatment for warfighters with posttraumatic stress disorder: Randomized trial showing improved treatment retention and outcome.: Background: Prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in military veterans has established efficacy, but is ineffective for a substantial number of patients. PE is also associated with high dropout rates. We hypothesized that hydrocortisone augmentation would enhance symptom improvement and reduce drop-out rates by diminishing the distressing effects of traumatic memories retrieved during imaginal exposure. We also hypothesized that in responders, hydrocortisone a
The culture, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of Rohingya refugees: a systematic review.: Aims: Despite the magnitude and protracted nature of the Rohingya refugee situation, there is limited information on the culture, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of this group. This paper, drawing on a report commissioned by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the literature on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of Rohingya refugees, including an examination of associated cultural factors. Method: Electronic databases were searched for eligible studies. Effects on PTSD symptoms, depression, and anxiety were extracted. Between- and within-group effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated using a random-effects model. Data were adjusted to account for
Moral injury and its mental health consequences among protesters: findings from Israel's civil protest against the government's judicial reform.
Background: Government actions and participating in protracted-duration protests against it affect protesters' mental health, leading to high distress levels, such as posttraumatic and depressive symptoms. Aside from exposure to violence and other issues, protest participation can pose unique challenges to the protesters as they may be exposed to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), such as the betrayal of leaders they once trusted. This study's primary objective was to examine the extent of psychological difficulties among civilians participating in long-duration protests in Israel. More specifically, the study aimed to understand the contribution of exposure to protest-related PMIEs to psychological difficulties such as posttraumatic and depressive symptoms. Method: Participants comprised 4036 Israelis who were actively involved in the unfolding civil protest movement against …

Moral injury in a context of trauma.
Moral injury, characterised by guilt, shame and self-condemnation, is conceptualised either as an adjunct to post-traumatic stress disorder or as a new syndrome. Studies of symptoms and potentially morally injurious events have produced a possible definition and informed the design of rating scales. The current challenge remains the design of effective interventions. Because moral injury relates to ethical behaviour, the meaning attached to events and perceptions of the self, moral philosophy and spirituality could contribute to the design of treatments.

Psychological and psychosocial interventions for refugee children resettled in high-income countries.
Large numbers of refugee children are arriving in high-income countries. The evidence to date suggests that they have mental health needs that are higher than for the general population and that these are exacerbated by the numbers of traumatic events they have experienced and the post-migration stressors they continue to be exposed to. The importance of a thorough and thoughtful assessment is discussed. Treatments of note are described for post-traumatic stress disorder, family functioning, general mental health problems and school environments. Future opportunities to operationalise outcome measures, develop multimodal interventions and utilise implementation science methodology are considered.

Childhood trauma and the enduring consequences of forcibly separating children from parents at the United States border.
Forcible separation and detention of children from parents seeking asylum in the United States has been decried as immoral and halted by court order. Babies and children have been separated and transported to facilities sometimes many miles away. Limited data on forced detention of unaccompanied minors reveal high incidence of posttraumatic stress, anxiety disorders, depression, aggression, and suicidal ideation. These consequences will be magnified in youths forcibly separated from their parents, particularly younger children who depend on attachment bonds for self-regulation and resilience. Studies exploring the neuropsychiatric consequences of traumatic stress have revealed consistent effects of early life stress on brain structure, function and connectivity, and the identification of sensitive periods, which occur throughout childhood when specific regions and pathways are strongly i…

Redressing First Nations historical trauma: theorizing mechanisms for indigenous culture as mental health treatment.
Indigenous "First Nations" communities have consistently associated their disproportionate rates of psychiatric distress with historical experiences of European colonization. This emphasis on the socio-psychological legacy of colonization within tribal communities has occasioned increasingly widespread consideration of what has been termed historical trauma within First Nations contexts. In contrast to personal experiences of a traumatic nature, the concept of historical trauma calls attention to the complex, collective, cumulative, and intergenerational psychosocial impacts that resulted from the depredations of past colonial subjugation. One oft-cited exemplar of this subjugation--particularly in Canada--is the Indian residential school. Such schools were overtly designed to "kill the Indian and save the man." This was institutionally achieved by sequestering First Nations children fro…

A case series investigating acceptance and commitment therapy as a treatment for previously treated, unremitted patients with anorexia nervosa.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) using a case series methodology among participants with a history of prior treatment for AN. Three participants enrolled; all completed the study. All participants had a history of 1-20 years of intensive eating disorder treatment prior to enrollment. Participants were seen for 17-19 twice-weekly sessions of manualized ACT. Symptoms were assessed at baseline, post-treatment and 1-year follow-up. All participants experienced clinically significant improvement on at least some measures; no participants worsened or lost weight even at 1-year follow-up. Simulation modelling analysis (SMA) revealed for some participants an increase in weight gain and a decrease in eating disorder symptoms during the treatment phase as compared to a baseline assessmen…

Couple therapy with combat veterans and their partners.
Service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan face psychological challenges that can exert profound effects on families and couples, but can also be treated within a systemic context. Couple therapy offers a means of increasing social support, decreasing interpersonal conflict, and addressing the experiential avoidance that maintains posttraumatic symptoms. For combat veterans and their partners, we present an adaptation of integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT) that reduces conflict and encourages intimacy through acceptance and skills strategies. By doing so, IBCT exposes service members in couple therapy to emotions, interpersonal situations, and activities that facilitate recovery from combat-related distress. We illustrate common presenting problems in this population and the utilization of IBCT with a case example.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
The current article describes the application of a behavioral psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), to the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is argued that PTSD can be conceptualized as a disorder that is developed and maintained in traumatized individuals as a result of excessive, ineffective attempts to control unwanted thoughts, feelings, and memories, especially those related to the traumatic event(s). As ACT is a therapeutic method designed specifically to reduce experiential avoidance, it may be a treatment that is particularly suited for individuals with PTSD. The application of ACT to PTSD is described, and a case example is used to demonstrate how this therapy can be successfully used with individuals presenting for life problems related to a traumatic event.

A single case series using visuospatial task interference to reduce the number of visual intrusive memories of trauma with refugees.
The current worldwide so-called "refugee crisis" has led to an unprecedented increase in migration globally. Because of stigma and language barriers, mental health care for refugees is limited. There is a need for novel, scalable psychological interventions. We investigated whether a brief behavioural intervention involving a memory reminder cue and Tetris gameplay on a smartphone reduces intrusive memories in refugees using a single case (N = 4) ABAB withdrawal design. The baseline phase (A) included a no-intervention week; the intervention phase (B) included an in-person session with the researchers, comprised of the behavioural intervention followed by self-guided use in daily life the following week. All participants reported a decrease in intrusive memories after the intervention, as well as functional improvements (e.g., in concentration). Importantly, participants rated the interv…

The impact of PTSD symptoms on post-disaster consumption: tertiary victims of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye.
Introduction: The February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes reshaped everyday life well beyond the impact zone; however, how disaster-linked psychological states influence psychosocial wellbeing and everyday behaviors, including consumer responses among tertiary victims (geographically distant yet psychologically affected), remains underexplored. Methods: We employ an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design (QUAN → QUAL): a cross-sectional survey of Istanbul adults (N = 350) is modeled using PLS-SEM, followed by 24 semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis, integrated via joint displays. Results: Quantitatively, PTSD relates to post-disaster wellbeing and consumption directly and indirectly through death anxiety (DA), intolerance of uncertainty (IUS), and search for meaning (MLQ-S); perceived media pressure (ME) attenuates these translations on average. Qualitatively, …

Confronting the Mental Health Challenges of Large-Scale Combat Operations.
The Department of Defense predicts that future conflicts will involve large-scale combat operations (LSCOs) characterized by high-intensity warfare between technologically advanced nations. These conflicts may result in prolonged exposure to violence, increasing the risk of severe mental health consequences for military personnel, veterans, and civilians. Research on past wars and ongoing conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, demonstrates the heightened risks of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, moral injury, and compassion fatigue in LSCOs. Unlike previous conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, LSCOs may involve prolonged deployments, limited medical evacuations, and greater use of cyber and psychological warfare, exacerbating psychological distress. Given these anticipated threats, we urge mental health professionals to proactively address the anticipated mental health challenge…

Exploring the impact of event-related and personal vulnerability characteristics on mental health after pandemic-related trauma exposure.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic heightened exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs), such as severe illness or the loss of a loved one. Its prolonged nature may have influenced how mental health symptoms evolved. Objective: This study examined changes in posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and mental wellbeing over time and identified factors contributing to differences in these outcomes. Method: Panel survey data were collected from Dutch youth and adults between March 2022 and June 2024. Participants reported PTEs during the pandemic and whether they still felt affected by these events. PTSS were measured with the PCL-5, anchored to their most distressing event. Mental wellbeing was assessed using the MHI-5. Mixed-effects models examined how risk factors influence severity of PTSS and mental wellbeing. Qualitative analysis of an open-ended question provided insight into the i…

Sex differential effects of early maternal separation on PTSD susceptibility in adult rats accompanied by telomere shortening in the hippocampus.
Early life stress (ELS) is thought to be a leading cause of mental disorders in adulthood, including PTSD. Recent studies have found that such stress has a gender and resilient specific effect on adult PTSD. This study aimed to assess emotion, and cognitive behavior, and to examine the sex differences and resilience of ELS on adult PTSD. At the same time, the expression of hippocampal telomere length and telomere repeat binding factors (TRF1 and TRF2) were detected to explore the mechanism of telomere length change. Rat offspring were separated from their dams (3 h/day or 6 h/day from PND2 ∼ PND14). Then, pups were treated with a single prolonged stress (SPS) procedure when they reached adulthood (PND80). Rats exposed early to MS and SPS showed anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors as well as impaired learning and memory. The rats exposed to MS3h showed reduced anxiety-like and depr…

Narrative analysis of interviews conducted with African unaccompanied refugee minors.
Background: Unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) are a particularly vulnerable subgroup of refugees, frequently exhibiting high levels of distress and a wide range of trauma-related symptoms. They are at risk of poor mental health outcomes such as developing complex posttraumatic stress disorder, an emergent mental disorder associated with re-experiencing, hyperarousal, and avoidance of trauma-related stimuli. Methods: We conducted a qualitative analysis of interviews with 28 unaccompanied refugee minors from African countries residing in Austria. Results: Three main strands of narrative focus were identified: war-related experiences, present experiences in the new home country, and different coping strategies. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that URM narratives are highly complex and that URM require supportive networks and psychotherapeutic care.

Associations among PTSD symptoms, fear of emotion, and couple communication difficulties: A between-person dyadic analysis.
This study investigated between-person associations among PTSD symptoms, fear of emotion, and perceived couple communication difficulties in a dyadic context among 64 trauma-exposed, mixed gender community couples (N = 128 individuals) using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model. Individuals with higher PTSD symptoms endorsed greater fear of their emotions (βMen = .72; βWomen = .49), and those with greater fear of their emotions reported lower levels of constructive couple communication (βMen = -.19; βWomen = -.21) and higher levels of self-demand/partner-withdraw communication (βMen = .20; βWomen = .25) and partner-demand/self-withdraw communication (βMen = .26; βWomen = .33) with their partners. Additionally, women whose partners had higher PTSD symptoms endorsed greater fear of their emotions (β = .30). The most robust indirect PTSD-communication links were between (a) ind…

Dealing with couple infidelity in romantic relationships: A group intervention feasibility study.
The extent to which group therapy benefits individuals who have experienced couple infidelity remains unexamined. In this study, a brief group intervention for individuals who experienced couple infidelity was designed, and the feasibility of the intervention was evaluated (i.e., acceptability; implementation; measurements' performance and, limited-efficacy testing). The final sample was composed of 20 women and 4 men (M = 29.95 years, SD = 12.3). Twenty-four completed pre and post assessments and 20 of these completed the follow-up assessment. At pre, post, and follow-up, participants responded to a questionnaire packet that included measures of depression, anxiety and PTSD symptoms, relationship self-efficacy, centrality of event, cognitive fusion, and decision to forgive. Also, follow-up interviews were conducted. The closed group intervention consisted of eight 90-min weekly sessions…

Resilience and Religious Coping in Libyan Survivors of Hurricane Daniele.
The aim of the study was to investigate the mediating roles of resilience, posttraumatic growth (PTG) and religiosity between the impact of hurricane trauma and psychological distress. Using a cross-sectional design, the study involved 101 Libyan participants with an average age of 30.43 years (SD = 9.59), of whom 72% were women. Participants completed validated tests, including the Impact of Event Scale (IES), Brief Resilience Scale, Muslim Religiosity Scale and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). The results indicated that posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) were not associated with PTG (r = 0.04, p > 0.05) or religiosity (r = 0.02, p > 0.05) but were negatively associated with resilience (r = -0.39, p < 0.001) and positively associated with psychological distress including anxiety (r = 0.72, p < 0.001) and depression (r = 0.69, p < 0.001). Structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed…

The psychosocial impacts of the 15 March terrorist attack on the Christchurch Muslim community: A descriptive, cross-sectional assessment.
Objective: On 15 March 2019, a white supremacist terrorist carried out sequential attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand during Friday prayers. This resulted in the loss of 51 lives, 40 others sustained gunshot injuries, and there were approximately 250 survivors. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts on community members, assess clinical needs, facilitate access to appropriate interventions and provide insights into working with a traumatised and diverse population. Methods: This cross-sectional study used semi-structured clinical interviews and self-report measures to assess social and demographic factors, mental health disorders and well-being for adult Muslims 11-32 months post-attack. Results: A total of 189 participants completed assessments. The sample was diverse, representing 34 different ethnicities and participant proximity to the attack was complex, with perso…

Unveiling the Structure in Mental Disorder Presentations.
Importance: DSM criteria are polythetic, allowing for heterogeneity of symptoms among individuals with the same disorder. In empirical research, most combinations were not found or only rarely found, prompting criticism of this heterogeneity. Objective: To elaborate how symptom-based definitions and assessments contribute to a distinct probability pattern for the occurrence of symptom combinations. Design, setting, and participants: This cross-sectional study involved a theoretical argument, simulation, and secondary data analysis of 4 preexisting datasets, each consisting of symptoms from 1 of the following syndromes: posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety. Data were obtained from various sources, including the National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive and Department of Veteran Affairs. A total of 155 474 participants were included (individual studi…

Trajectories of moral injury and their associations with posttraumatic stress symptoms among recently discharged israeli veterans.
Background: While it is already known that potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) have a deleterious effect on veterans, little is known about the changes in PMIEs subjective appraisals over time, as well as its contribution to changes in psychiatric symptoms. In the current study, we longitudinally assessed subjective appraisals of PMIEs experienced during combat military service and their associations with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among recently discharged combat veterans. Method: Participants were 374 veterans who participated in a one-year longitudinal study with three measurement points: T1-one month before discharge from army service, and then again six months and twelve months following discharge (T2 and T3, respectively). Results: Latent Growth Mixture Modeling (LGMM) indicated heterogenic patterns of changes in PMIEs across measurements. The 'resilient' (low an…

Marital loss, gender and their association with mental health and physical health outcomes in Bosnian refugees: lesson reminder in a time of war.
Introduction: Mental health disorders and chronic health diseases are highly prevalent and impactful consequences of distressful experiences among refugees, yet a comprehensive conceptual model encompassing biopsychosocial factors is lacking. This study aims to assess the relevance of widowhood to PTSD and major depression maintenance as well as to adverse health outcomes in a cohort of Bosnian refugees. Methods: This longitudinal study included 526 subjects followed up for 3 years. The interviews were conducted in refugee camps in Varaždin, Croatia, in the Bosnian language. Data were collected using the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire and Hopkins Checklist-25, respectively. Physical health disorders were self-reported. Results: Both at baseline and endpoint female gender and marital loss are associated with a statistically significant higher burden of psychological and physical health outc…

Developmental couple therapy for complex trauma: Results of an implementation pilot study.
This pilot study examined the process and outcome of Developmental Couple Therapy for Complex Trauma (DCTCT) with seven couples. DCTCT is a novel form of couple therapy designed to address complex posttraumatic stress disorder symptomatology and couple-level distress in trauma survivors and their partners. These couples showed statistically significant improvements in overall trauma symptoms, emotion regulation capacities, and reductions in attachment-related anxiety. These results suggest that DCTCT may be a promising approach to intervention. Future directions include the development of a sequential care model, because resource limitations may not allow for all couples to receive the full treatment model over 40 weeks; it will also be important to address measurement issues in relation to mentalizing, to allow for observational coding across the course of therapy.

Properties of the modified self-forgiveness dual-process scale in populations at risk for moral injury.
Despite theory suggesting that self-forgiveness facilitates recovery from moral injury, no measure of self-forgiveness has been validated with individuals exposed to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). Military veterans, healthcare workers, and first responders who reported PMIE exposure (n = 924) completed the Self-Forgiveness Dual-Process Scale, which assesses two dimensions of the self-forgiveness process. The first dimension, value affirmation, refers to appraising personal responsibility and being willing to make amends for one's involvement in a PMIE. The second dimension, esteem restoration, refers to accepting oneself as valuable and capable of growth despite one's failures and imperfections. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses replicated the original scale's two-factor structure in 10 items modified to apply to the diverse contexts in which PMIEs occur. Next, …

Using the Moral Injury and Distress Scale to identify clinically meaningful moral injury.
Despite the proliferation of moral injury studies, a remaining gap is distinguishing moral injury from normative distress following exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). Our goal was to leverage mental health and functional measures to identify clinically meaningful and functionally impairing moral injury using the Moral Injury and Distress Scale (MIDS). Participants who endorsed PMIE exposure (N = 645) were drawn from a population-based sample of military veterans, health care workers, and first responders. Using signal detection methods, we identified the optimally efficient MIDS score for detecting clinically significant posttraumatic stress and depressive symptom severity, trauma-related guilt, and functional impairment. The most efficient cut scores across outcomes converged between 24 and 27. We recommend a cut score of 27 given that roughly 70% of participants …

The role of interoception in reducing trauma-associated distress: a feasibility study.
Background: Altered interoception plays an important role in chronic stress and posttraumatic stress disorder. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TSY) intervention for improving emotional distress and psychological discomfort in women living under circumstances of social and gender vulnerability. We assessed the effect of the treatment on the interoceptive mechanisms, and whether the psychological improvements were mediated by the changes in these mechanisms. Methods: The study involved a sample of 62 women who attended public community centres dedicated to supporting women victims of gender-based violence or who were socially and economically disadvantaged because of their gender. Participants underwent a six-week TSY programme. We evaluated dropout rate, adherence, and intervention satisfaction. We measured emotional distress, psychologica…
