This study investigated the influence of sleep deprivation on three commonly used emotion regulation strategies (distraction, reappraisal, suppression) in Gross's (1998) process model of emotion regulation. Mood impairment is stronger in young than in older adults after sleep deprivation.
Sleep deprivation commonly impairs affective regulation and causes worse mood. However, the majority of previous research concerns young adults. Because susceptibility to sleep deprivation and emotion regulation change distinctively across adult age, we tested here the hypothesis that the effect of sleep deprivation on mood is stronger in young than in older adults. In an experimental design, young (18-30 years) and older adults (60-72 years) participated in either a sleep control (young, n = 63; older, n = 47) or a total sleep deprivation condition (young, n = 61; older, n = 47). Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world. Histone Acetylation Regulation in Sleep Deprivation-Induced Spatial Memory Impairment.
Sleep disorders negatively affect cognition and health. Recent evidence has indicated that chromatin remodeling via histone acetylation regulates cognitive function. This study aimed to investigate the possible roles of histone acetylation in sleep deprivation (SD)-induced cognitive impairment. Results of the Morris water maze test showed that 3 days of SD can cause spatial memory impairment in Wistar rats. Laparoscopic skills and cognitive function are not affected in surgeons during a night shift.
Objective: To monitor surgeons' performance and cognition during night shifts.
Design: Surgeons were monitored before call and on call (17-hour shift). Psychomotor performance was assessed by laparoscopic simulation and cognition by the d2 test of attention. The surgeons performed the laparoscopic simulation and the d2 test of attention at 8 a.m. before call and at 4 a.m. on call. Sleep was measured by wrist actigraphy and sleepiness by the Karolinska sleepiness scale.

Study objectives: Chronic insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder that negatively affects daytime functioning and confers risk for the future development of psychiatric disorder. Study objective: Loneliness has been shown to predict poor health. One hypothesized mechanism is that lonely individuals do not sleep as well as individuals who feel more connected to others. Our goal was to test whether loneliness is associated with sleep fragmentation or sleep duration.

Forward-looking questions regarding ego depletion and mental fatigue in sport psychology: Comment on Englert.
Research on ego depletion and mental fatigue (ED/MF) show that physical performance can be impaired by mental processes. Exciting directions for future research include mapping different effects of ED/MF on effort vs. skill aspects of sport, given that effort is directly controllable but skill relies on automatic, overlearned processes. Weakened attention control could contribute to both problems. Impairments of decision-making during competition could lead to indecision and status quo bias, selfish play rather than team play, and certain types of mistakes. Flow states and positive affect may counteract ED/MF. Physical training, self-control training, and mental practice may all help.
