701 to 725 of 1,216Forgiveness, Self-Forgiveness, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health: Big Data Findings from an Australian Youth Cohort.
Conflicts and transgressions are inevitable features of the human experience, with well-established negative social, interpersonal, and intrapersonal consequences if they are not adequately resolved. This study tested whether the effectiveness of two adaptive traits typically observed in research with adults—forgiveness and self-forgiveness—would generalize to youth and adolescents, specifically in relation to their psychological wellbeing (hope and life satisfaction) and psychological distress. Notably, the study makes two new contributions: It tests relations with a large nationwide representative sample, and it examines the moderating effects of variables likely to be important considerations in the school context and often where conflict arises, namely school engagement, and student age and gender. There were N = 79,670 participants aged 7–18 years (Mage = 12.05 years; SD = 2.63; mod…

Social identities reduce self-focused attention in social anxiety.
Self-focused attention is a maintaining factor in social anxiety disorder and a key target in treatment. Yet, current cognitive behavioural conceptualisations of social anxiety focus on intra-psychological determinants and thus do not consider social processes that might be associated with self-focused attention. We investigated whether participants' multiple group memberships (internalised as social identities) protected against self-focused attention in two studies. These studies assessed the link between social anxiety (both trait- and state-level), social identities and self-focused attention. Study 1 was a cross-sectional online survey (N = 300) and Study 2 (N = 157) was an experiment that manipulated the salience of participants' social identities (compared to an active control condition) ahead of an anxiety-provoking speech task. In Study 1, belonging to a greater number of social…

Unveiling the nature and attributes of self-forgiveness in young Indian adults: insights from thematic analysis.
BACKGROUND: Although interpersonal forgiveness is well studied, there is little research on self-forgiveness. The available research on self-forgiveness is mostly based on interpersonal forgiveness. This study attempts to understand the nature, attributes and dynamics of self-forgiveness. METHODS: The data were collected from 25 adults (aged 18–25 years) enrolled in higher education through a semistructured interview and were thematically analysed. RESULTS: The analysis resulted in six themes illustrating how participants understood self-forgiveness. Theme 1 emphasizes early offense realization, reduced anger, and facing consequences, often leading to guilt influenced by moral upbringing. Theme 2 addresses mental and physical discomfort, including rumination and poor concentration. Theme 3 discusses alleviating negative feelings through future actions and viewing mistakes as growth lesso…

Impulsivity and Emotional Dysregulation in Distress and Self-Perceived Pornography Addiction in Romanian Adults: Advancing the Dysregulation Pathway of "The Pornography Problems Due to Moral Incongruence Model".
"The Pornography Problems Due to Moral Incongruence (PPMI)" is a popular theoretical model addressing negative outcomes of pornography use, through two pathways: (1) the dysregulation pathway and (2) the moral incongruence pathway. The morality pathway has been studied extensively, though the dysregulation pathway has remained underdeveloped. The current study aimed to further investigate the dysregulation pathway from the PPMI model by examining impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. This research was conducted on a sample of 1620 Romanian participants (69.1% females), aged between 18 and 74 years (M = 26.87; SD = 9.15). They completed questionnaires designed to assess dimensions of impulsivity (e.g., "negative urgency," "positive urgency," "sensation seeking," "lack of premeditation," and "lack of perseverance"), emotional dysregulation, distress, and self-perceived addiction to porn…

Self-actualization and self-transcendence: An empirical model of athletes' meaning in elite sport.
In line with sport psychology's growing focus on wellbeing and mental health, meaning (i.e., experiencing life as coherent, significant, oriented, and belonging) has been gaining attention in elite sport. Its study is theoretically and practically relevant, since athletes often refer to meaning, especially when it is lacking. However, while wider research highlights its role for physical and mental health, empirical inquiry in sport psychology has produced diverse conceptualizations and lacking alignment with psychological theory. This makes it difficult for practitioners to address meaning when its nature, threats, and supports remain unclear. To address this gap, our study sought to (a) provide an empirical account of athletes' lived experience of meaning, (b) advance theoretical integration with psychological frameworks by proposing a contextualized model of meaning in elite sport tha…

Invisible pain, visible change: the impact of multidisciplinary treatment on women with fibromyalgia.
Objectives: Fibromyalgia is a hidden chronic condition characterised by persistent pain and fatigue, disproportionately affecting women. Because its symptoms are invisible and unpredictable, those living with it frequently encounter scepticism from others, as well as self-doubt. This study examines the experience of women with fibromyalgia participating in a structured multidisciplinary intervention, tracing their journey from non-acceptance toward coping and adjustment across personal and family domains.
Methods: Sixteen Israeli women diagnosed with fibromyalgia participated in a 30-week multidisciplinary fibro-therapy intervention. Following the program, in-depth interviews were conducted with each participant. Data were analysed qualitatively using Grounded Theory methodology to identify emerging themes related to illness perception, acceptance, and adaptive coping.

Enhancing Understanding of Eating Psychopathology: A Network Analysis Study.
Compassion Focused Therapy for eating disorders (CFT-E) has been shown to be effective in treating eating psychopathology. Exploring which processes identified by the CFT-E model are most linked with eating disorder symptoms could help develop targeted treatments. However, the relationship between these variables requires further investigation. This study explores the interconnections between eating disorder symptoms and processes identified by the CFT-E using a network analysis approach. Participants were 497 individuals (77.3% female) from a community sample who completed measures to assess body dissatisfaction, shape and weight overvaluation, cognitive restraint, bingeing, emotional eating, purging, self-compassion, social comparison through appearance, self-criticism, appearance-related shame, guilt and pride, and positive and negative affect. A regularized partial correlation networ…

Blackburn M, Molnar DS, Zinga D (2025)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usJournal of research on adolescence : the official journal of the Society for Research on Adolescence1 citations Perfect image, depressed mood: Pathways from perfectionistic self-presentation to depressive symptoms through online and in-person connectedness among Canadian adolescents.
The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM) contends that perfectionism predicts psychopathology via social disconnection and has received support in adult and adolescent samples. However, little is known about the role of online connection. Consequently, this work tested whether online social connection and in-person social support uniquely mediate the relation between perfectionistic self-presentation and depressive symptoms among adolescents. A community sample of 354 adolescents (Mage = 15.51, SD = 2.07; 68.93% female; 73.44% White) completed surveys assessing these constructs at three time points, each spaced approximately 2 months apart. Results supported the PSDM at the between-persons level such that perfectionistic self-presentation was related to depressive symptoms via online social connection and in-person social support. Importantly, these findings both replicate pre…

Resilience and bedtime procrastination among Chinese college students: the mediating role of perceived stress and moderating roles of self-compassion and gender.
BACKGROUND: Bedtime procrastination has become increasingly prevalent in China in recent years. Numerous studies have demonstrated the negative effects of bedtime procrastination on individuals’ physical and mental health. The present study aims to examine the relationship between resilience and bedtime procrastination among Chinese college students, as well as to explore the mediating role of perceived stress and the dual moderating roles of self-compassion and gender. METHODS: A total of 5,153 college students aged 17 to 30 years (Mage ± SD = 19.91 ± 1.22) were recruited in this study and completed a self-reported questionnaire, which included the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), the Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). RESULTS: Resilience was found to be negatively correlated with college students’ pe…

Decoding the mind of self-compassion through a topic modeling analysis of 9000+ free-text narratives.
Self-compassion, defined as compassion directed toward oneself in difficult situations, has been widely studied; however, the specific cognitive and behavioral patterns associated with it remain poorly understood. Participants (780 Japanese individuals; mean age = 43.0, SD = 10.6, range = 19-75) responded to 12 free-text prompts asking them to describe their typical thoughts and behaviors in three difficult situations (suffering, recognizing personal shortcomings, and experiencing failure). Employing structural topic modeling (one of the natural language processing techniques), we used participants' scores on the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Compassionate Engagement and Action Scales (CEAS) as metadata to quantify the associations between self-compassion and each topic. The results revealed that higher self-compassion was linked to topics reflecting problem-solving orientation, ba…

When the night is too short. Bedtime procrastination, self-compassion, and sleep in a daily diary study.
Objective: Since sleep is an important part of life and too little sleep can lead to disastrous consequences, it is important to look at the factors that may disturb healthy sleep. While procrastination and in particular bedtime procrastination is such a disruptive factor, self-compassion on the other side might be a protective factor.
Methods: For this reason, in this study, we took a closer look at the interplay between bedtime procrastination, self-compassion, as well as at the actual sleep outcomes in a longitudinal diary study over 1 week. Our assumption was that bedtime procrastination has a negative impact on sleep outcomes, yet self-compassion could be a protective factor buffering this influence. To enable comparability with a previous study, analyses of variance were carried out.
Results: Utilizing frequentist and Bayesian analyses, we found a consistent negative influence of b…

Measuring transformative virtual reality experiences in children's drawings.
Transformative experiences in an individual's life have a lasting impact on identity, belief system, and values. At the core of these experiences is the complex emotion of awe that promotes learning, making it worthwhile to study from an educational point of view. Drawing studies may provide a useful measure of awe in children-one that is more intuitive and attractive than questionnaires alone. Previous studies conducted with adults indicated that the diminished self, associated with transformative experiences, manifests in an actual decrease in size for figures representing the self in drawings. In the current study, self-representation was investigated in drawings of 10- to 12-year-old primary school children within the context of an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience that elicits the overview effect, known to lead to an intense apperception of awe. We did not replicate the adul…

The effect of viewing #whatieatinaday TikTok videos with and without calories on body-related shame, guilt, envy, and intentions to diet in young women.
Exposure to calorie labels on restaurant menus has been linked to negative body image outcomes in young adults (e.g., shame, guilt). Young adults may also be exposed to calorie information when viewing TikTok content such as what I eat in a day (WIEIAD) videos. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of viewing WIEIAD TikTok videos (with and without calories) on body-related shame, guilt and envy, and intentions to change diet in young women. We also examined indirect effects of upward appearance comparisons and moderating effects of self-compassion. Participants were young women [N = 335, Mage =25 years (SD = 3.24)] recruited for a study titled "social media use, self-perceptions and mood" (cover story) through Cloud Research Connect. Participants were randomly assigned to view a series of a) WIEIAD videos with calories, b) WIEIAD videos without calories or c) travel…

The roles of self-compassion and social support on the maternal adjustment to a child's hip dysplasia.
Parenthood can be challenging when facing a child's chronic illness such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Although social support is known as a protective factor for the caregiver's mental health, the role of self-compassion is less explored. This study, conducted in Portugal, explored whether self-compassion and social support mediate the relationship between mothers' psychological adjustment and perception of their child's illness. Ninety-four mothers of children with DDH completed questionnaires on illness perception, self-compassion, perceived social support, and psychological distress. Results suggested that self-compassion and social support mediated the relationship between mothers' overall negative perception of the children's illness and psychological distress. The final model accounted for 50% of the variance of depressive symptoms, 40% of anxiety, and 63% of percei…

Targeting schema change in social anxiety via autobiographical memory reconstruction.
Negative self-schemas are fundamental to social anxiety disorder and contribute to its persistence, thus understanding how to change schemas is of critical importance. Memory-based interventions and associated theories propose that reconstructing autobiographical memories tethered to schemas with conceptual details that challenge the associated expectations will lead to schema change. Here, we test this proposal in a between-subjects behavioural experiment with undergraduate participants with social anxiety. All participants were asked to recall aversive social memories, evaluated these memories on a series of scales, including estimates of reoccurrence, and provided ratings of negative and positive schema beliefs. Next, half the participants reconstructed (rescripted) these aversive memories with conceptual details that challenged the active schema (conceptual condition) and the other h…

Self -Confidence in Young Athletes: A Protective Factor Against Perfectionism and Anxiety in Competitive Grassroots Sport.
Perfectionism includes various dimensions focused on different planes of psychological functioning, with both positive and negative elements that influence adaptation to the pursuit of achievement and personal satisfaction with efforts and their attainment. We examined participants' levels of perfectionism and the relationship between perfectionism and anxiety in young athletes, and we described the mediating factor of self-confidence as a determinant of sport performance. We utilized a non-experimental, descriptive, and transversal research design. A total of 263 Spanish young athletes (M age = 15.79 years; SD = 1.07) who belonged to different sports clubs and engaged in different sports completed the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) and the Competitive Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R). Our results confirmed our belief that self-confidence was a protective factor for diminis…

Buenconsejo JU, Datu JAD, Liu D (2024)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usJournal of research on adolescence : the official journal of the Society for Research on Adolescence1 citations Does grit predict thriving or is it the other way around? A latent cross-lagged panel model on the triarchic model of grit and the 5Cs of positive youth development.
Grit, defined as passion and perseverance to achieve long-term goals, has been associated with adolescents' optimal academic and psychological functioning. However, the role of grit in adolescents' positive youth development (PYD)-characterized by the 5Cs known as competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring-remains unknown. Using latent cross-lagged panel modeling, this study examined the longitudinal relations between the triarchic model of grit (TMG) dimensions (i.e., perseverance of effort, consistency of interest, and adaptability to situations), and the 5Cs of PYD while controlling for specific socio-demographic covariates (gender, age, SES, and school type). Data were obtained from 1620 Filipino adolescents (Mage = 17.15; SDage = 1.00) in November 2021 and May 2022. Results show that grit dimensions predicted subsequent PYD dimensions, but not vice versa. Specifically…

Labels Are For Soup Cans: How Self-Labeling as "Addicted" to Pornography Is Associated with Negative Outcomes.
Pornography viewers often report being addicted to pornography even if their behavior does not indicate such addiction. In this study with 1099 participants (52% male), we explored how the specific belief in being addicted to pornography could predict both individual and relational outcomes beyond actual pornography use and reported compulsive pornography use (i.e., considering one's use to be out of control). Using a structural equation model, our results showed that higher agreement with the pornography addiction label, without accounting for compulsivity, was associated with higher depression, suicide ideation, communication discomfort about pornography, and higher odds of having a relationship end solely because of pornography. After accounting for compulsivity, higher agreement with the pornography addiction label was only associated with higher communication discomfort about pornog…

Smith M, Ferguson HJ (2024)MEDLINE-indexed journal, not yet read by usCortex; a journal devoted to the study of the nervous system and behavior3 citations Indistinguishable behavioural and neural correlates of perceptual self-other distinction in autistic and neurotypical adults.
Previous research has suggested that self-bias (i.e., enhanced cognitive processing of self-versus other-relevant information) may be atypical in autism spectrum conditions (ASC), perhaps due to difficulties with self-other distinction. However, empirical evidence for this is inconsistent, and the neural basis of processing differences remains unknown. We present two experiments that aimed to test perceptual self-bias and familiarity effects in ASC using a perceptual-association task. Participants were asked to distinguish face/label associations of the self from those of other people of differing levels of familiarity (i.e., friend vs stranger). Experiment 1 took an individual differences approach by testing whether behavioural self-bias is associated with the number of autistic traits in a neurotypical adult sample (N = 59). Experiment 2 took a case-control approach by testing whether …

Properties of the modified self-forgiveness dual-process scale in populations at risk for moral injury.
Despite theory suggesting that self-forgiveness facilitates recovery from moral injury, no measure of self-forgiveness has been validated with individuals exposed to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). Military veterans, healthcare workers, and first responders who reported PMIE exposure (n = 924) completed the Self-Forgiveness Dual-Process Scale, which assesses two dimensions of the self-forgiveness process. The first dimension, value affirmation, refers to appraising personal responsibility and being willing to make amends for one's involvement in a PMIE. The second dimension, esteem restoration, refers to accepting oneself as valuable and capable of growth despite one's failures and imperfections. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses replicated the original scale's two-factor structure in 10 items modified to apply to the diverse contexts in which PMIEs occur. Next, …

Beyond HIV shame: the role of self-forgiveness and acceptance in living with HIV.
Research is developing regarding the beneficial association of spirituality with numerous health outcomes in people living with HIV (PLWH); however, little attention has been paid to the association of these variables with forgiveness and acceptance of HIV status. This cross-sectional study used a sample of 648 PLWH from the United States aged 18-61 to test the mediating effects of forgiveness and acceptance of HIV status on the relationship of spirituality and life satisfaction. As expected, self-forgiveness and acceptance straightforwardly and serially explained the links between spirituality and life satisfaction, while forgiveness of others was not a significant mediator for this relationship. The data obtained suggest that spirituality and self-forgiveness are two important targets for future experimental research, and therapeutic interventions on these variables may have a synergis…

Toward a memory perspective on eating psychopathology: An investigation of the types of childhood and adolescence memories that are associated with eating disorder symptoms.
The cognitive mechanisms through which specific life events affect the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED) have received limited attention in the scientific literature. The present research aims to address this gap by adopting a memory perspective to explore the type of life events associated with eating psychopathology and how these events are encoded and reconstructed as memories. Two studies (n = 208 and n = 193) were conducted to investigate the relationship between specific memories and eating disorder psychopathology. Study 1 focused on parent-related memories, while Study 2 examined childhood/adolescence memories. Results from both studies revealed that need thwarting and shame in memories were associated with eating disorder symptoms, but only when individuals drew symbolic connections between these memories and food or eating behavior. Moreover, need thwarting a…

Exercise identity and physical activity behavior during late adolescence: A four wave cross-lagged panel model.
Research has shown that physical activity behavior tends to decline across adolescence before stabilizing in adulthood. Identifying salient factors underlying these behavioral changes is therefore imperative for informing intervention development. This study explored the temporal nature of the relationship between exercise identity and physical activity behavior during the transition out of high school. An analysis of data from the Application of integrated Approaches to understanding Physical activity during the Transition to emerging adulthood (ADAPT) prospective cohort study was conducted, involving 1451 Canadian adolescents (Mage = 15.93 ± 0.53 years; 52.4% female). Participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form to report weekly moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and an abbreviated version of the Exercise Identity Scale yearly for four years b…

Facilitative effect of awe on cooperation: The role of the small-self and self-other inclusion.
Awe has been theorized as a kind of self-transcendence emotion that has an important impact on individual social behavior. Based on the self-transcendence of awe, this study examined how awe can increase small-self and self-other inclusion to facilitate cooperation among individuals across three studies (N = 1162). First, the relationship between awe, cooperative propensity, and the mediating role of small-self and self-other inclusion in the relationship was examined using questionnaires on trait levels (Study 1). Second, awe emotions were induced from the state level through behavioral experiments to verify the facilitative effect on cooperative behavior in multiple rounds of public goods dilemma (Study 2). Third, by adding the induction of negative awe to discuss the impact of different valence of awe on cooperative behavior, the mediating role of small-self and self-other inclusion w…

When meaning in life protects against fear of death: The moderating role of self-alienation.
Objective: A sense of meaning in life (MIL) is thought to help protect people against experiencing explicit anxiety about death. However, the experience of meaning is complex and subjective and may relate to death anxiety in nuanced ways. We examine how self-alienation-a feeling of not knowing/being disconnected from one's self-might moderate the relationship between MIL and death anxiety.
Method: Across five studies, we tested the hypothesis that MIL would negatively predict death anxiety more strongly for people relatively low in self-alienation. These studies were similar in design and included exploratory, confirmatory, and pre-registered tests.
Results: A meta-regression across our five studies (N = 2001) provided clear evidence that MIL was most strongly associated with lower death anxiety at low self-alienation. We also observed that MIL was positively associated with death anxiet…
