2826 to 2850 of 6,178Family resilience and psychological well-being among Chinese breast cancer survivors and their caregivers.
Walsh's family resilience theory indicated that families could foster resilient outcomes among their members when they are facing changes or crises. However, little is known about family resilience and psychological well-being among Chinese breast cancer survivors and their caregivers. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the direct and indirect relationships between family resilience, breast cancer survivors' post-traumatic growth (PTG), quality of life (QOL), and their principal caregivers' caregiver burden. A total of 108 breast cancer survivors/principal caregivers pairs completed a cross-sectional questionnaire survey in a comprehensive cancer of a public hospital in Shandong Province, China. The structural equation modelling (SEM) results showed that family resilience had direct and indirect effects on QOL and caregiver burden, and it was positively related to the PTG of the surv…

Normalization as a Strategy for Maintaining Quality of Life While Coping with Infertility in a Pronatalist Culture.
Purpose: Infertility could be highly stressful, particularly in a pronatalist culture. We aimed to develop the concept and a measure of normalization (maintaining normal life routines and feeling "normal") as a strategy that could enable women with infertility maintain their quality of life (QoL) while coping with this condition. We tested its associations with women's well-being, distress and QoL in Israel, where being childless is socially unacceptable and highly stigmatized.
Methods: One-hundred and eighty Israeli women undergoing infertility treatment at a fertility community clinic filled in questionnaires assessing normalization-related coping strategies, QoL, and psychological adjustment (distress, wellbeing). Eight months later, 55 women conceived; 55 women who had not conceived completed a second questionnaire.
Results: At baseline, normalization was related to higher QoL and be…

Influence of religiosity and spiritual coping on health-related quality of life in Saudi haemodialysis patients.
Introduction: Patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD) are frequently troubled by psychiatric disorders and coping problems, which can pose a serious threat to their physical and mental well-being. Using religious and spiritual interventions as a means of coping with physical and mental challenges is widely recognized. Although this topic has been well studied, in the Middle East regions, where Islam is the dominant religion, studies are limited. Thus, this study was performed to explore the influence of religiosity and spiritual coping (SC) on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of Saudi patients receiving HD.
Methods: A total of 168 HD patients from three hospitals in Saudi Arabia formed a convenient sample for this descriptive, cross-sectional hospital-based study. Data collection was done via questionnaire-guided interviews using the Muslim Religious Index as well as the Arabic …

The feasibility and acceptability of a chaplain-led intervention for caregivers of seriously ill patients: A Caregiver Outlook pilot study.
Objective: When caring for a loved one with a life-limiting illness, a caregiver's own physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering can be profound. While many interventions focus on physical and emotional well-being, few caregiver interventions address existential and spiritual needs and the meaning that caregivers ascribe to their role. To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the process and content of Caregiver Outlook, we employed a manualized chaplain-led intervention to improve well-being by exploring role-related meaning among caregivers of patients with a life-limiting illness.
Method: We conducted a single-arm pre-post pilot evaluation among caregivers of patients with advanced cancer or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Caregivers completed three chaplain-led intervention sessions focusing on (1) a relationship review, (2) forgiveness, and (3) legacy. Outcomes admin…

Sense of coherence, rather than exercise capacity, is the stronger predictor to obtain health-related quality of life in adults with congenital heart disease.
Objective: Irrespective of their cardiovascular findings, quality of life in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is good or even superior to that in healthy controls. The sense of coherence (SOC), a psychological resource that focuses on factors that support human health and well-being, was suggested to act as a potential pathway for maintaining and improving quality of life independently from the disease status.
Patients and methods: From April 2010 to May 2011, we consecutively included 546 young adults (236 female, median age 26.9 years, aged from 16 to 71 years) with various CHD into the study. Patients completed the SOC-13 questionnaire and the health-related quality of life questionnaire SF-36. Afterwards they performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test.
Results: In adults with CHD, SOC was slightly enhanced compared with reference values (CHD: median 74.0 [IQR: 63.8;81.0] v…

From Patienthood to Active Collaboration: Advancing Lived Experience Expertise in Addressing the Economic Determinants of Mental Health.
Economic hardship-including poverty, housing insecurity, unemployment, food insecurity, and debt-is among the most consistently documented determinants of mental health. Extensive epidemiologic and social science research shows that adverse economic conditions increase the risk, severity, and persistence of depression, anxiety, suicidality, and severe mental illness. Although social policies can improve mental health outcomes, relatively few interventions within mental health systems target economic determinants. Those that do are often professionally designed and limited in scope. In this perspective article, we argue that advancing effective and equitable interventions that address economic determinants of mental health requires meaningful participation of people with lived experiences of economic hardship and mental health challenges. Drawing on epistemological and empirical literatur…

Grief, Bereavement, and Mental Health After Stillbirth.
Following stillbirth, profound grief is well-documented, and co-occurring mental health struggles are common. Distinguishing normal grief from mental health conditions is crucial yet difficult, especially when losses are traumatic. Strong social and emotional support promotes integration and adjustment, but stigma surrounding stillbirth often negatively impacts the degree of support families receive. Many bereaved parents prefer peer-based and animal-assisted supports over conventional clinical services, which may reflect gaps in clinician training in perinatal bereavement care. Accordingly, all professionals who interface with bereaved families should receive targeted education in evidence-informed communication, compassionate care, and community-based support.

Tranquillity as a Determinant of Health: A Synthesis of Exposure Surrogates and Operationalization for Environmental Epidemiology.
Objective: Tranquillity has historically been regarded as a subjective experience of peace and harmony with nature, yet it is increasingly recognized as a measurable environmental characteristic with potential implications for population health and urban planning. This review synthesizes common tranquillity concepts, their environmental surrogates, and links to health outcomes.
Methods: This narrative, conceptual review synthesizes literature identified via iterative PubMed searches (up to May 2025) focused on two domains: environmental exposure surrogates used in epidemiological studies (e.g., green space, natural sound), and indices and modeling approaches developed to spatially map tranquillity. Literature selection was based on conceptual relevance rather than exhaustive coverage.
Results: Tranquillity is a complex construct characterized by the presence of natural elements and low n…

The role of activity engagement, social connection, and masculinity norms in men's shed outcomes for male mental health: a narrative review.
Background/objectives: Men's Sheds are community-based, male-focused spaces that use shared practical activities to foster social connection and wellbeing, particularly among older and retired men at risk of social isolation. Despite growing policy interest across Australia, Ireland, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and Canada, the mechanisms by which Men's Sheds produce mental health benefits remain poorly theorized and inconsistently measured. This narrative review synthesizes peer-reviewed evidence on how three intersecting mechanisms activity engagement, social connection, and masculinity norms shape mental health outcomes in Men's Sheds, with attention to Canadian and international contexts.
Methods: A systematic search of PubMed was conducted in May 2026 using Boolean search strings targeting Men's Shed literature combined with psychosocial outcome and mechanistic terms, yielding 44 c…

Nature's impact on human health and wellbeing: the scale matters.
Contact with nature can have a significant influence on human physical and mental health and wellbeing. As such, various concepts and theories as well as therapeutic approaches have been developed. The term "nature," however, covers a broad range of size and scales, ranging from individuals or small groups of animals or plants, certain ecosystems toward landscapes. The purpose of this paper is to differentiate concepts, theories, and therapy forms according to the scales of nature. We base our conceptional approach on the biological/ecological scales of species/individuals, ecosystems/land-use types, and landscapes. Based on a review, we differentiate the current state of the utilization of greenspace exposure measurements and measures assessing mental health according to these scales. We argue that a clear differentiation of biological and ecological scales provides a better understandi…

Toward a multidisciplinary neurobiology of interoception and mental health.
Interoception, the process by which the nervous system senses, interprets and integrates internal physiological signals, is fundamental to health, playing a key role in brain-body feedback loops that maintain homeostasis. Disruptions in interoceptive processing are common across psychiatric disorders, highlighting its relevance for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. This review examines recent translational advances in interoception research, with a focus on anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, and functional gastrointestinal disorders, where altered interoceptive signaling contributes to core symptoms. We discuss emerging cellular and molecular insights from animal models and address barriers to translating these findings to human psychopathology. To bridge this gap, we propose a "roving lens" approach, a multidisciplinary framework that dynamically integrates findings acr…

The Role of Acculturative Stress on the Mental Health of Immigrant Youth: A Scoping Literature Review.
Acculturation after settlement has been identified as a risk factor affecting the mental health of immigrant youth. Increasing rates of immigration and expanding populations of immigrant youth mean that addressing their mental is a priority. Acculturative stress is the stress-response resulting from the effects of multiple stressors that result from the need to acculturate. Among youth within the developmental stages of late adolescence and emerging adulthood, increased sensitivity to stress, and developmental demands, impact their mental health. The effects of acculturative stress place an additional burden on the mental health of immigrant youth. This scoping review examined existing literature that investigated a variety of relationships between acculturative stress and youth mental health. A comprehensive search strategy that focused on studies involving youth, mainly aged between 15…

Israeli mental health in the aftermath of the October 7 terrorist attack: risks, challenges, and recommendations.
Background: The October 7, 2023 terrorist attack and subsequent war in Israel have created an unprecedented mental health crisis. This commentary examines emerging data on the psychological impact of these events and argues for a paradigm shift in the Israeli mental healthcare system.
Main body: Recent studies reveal a dramatic increase in PTSD, depression, and anxiety among the Israeli populace. These findings underscore the long-lasting and pervasive nature of psychological trauma. Certain populations are disproportionately affected: women, ethnic minorities (particularly Israeli Arabs, who comprise 18.1% of the population), and those experiencing traumatic loss, displacement, or economic hardship. These groups require prioritized and tailored interventions. While existing outcome research provides a solid foundation for treating common trauma-related disorders like PTSD, depression, a…
