Emotion regulation in supervisory interactions and marital well-being: A spillover-crossover perspective.

When interacting with supervisors, employees often engage in emotion regulation (i.e., surface acting and deep acting), and the consequences may extend beyond work boundaries. Based on the spillover-crossover model and the strength model of self-control, we examined the relationship between employee emotion regulation during supervisory interactions and marital well-being (i.e., spouse's perceived marriage quality and satisfaction). Two survey studies using Chinese employee-spouse dyads showed that employees' surface acting was positively related to ego depletion. Surface acting was found to be negatively related to spouses' perceived marital well-being through the serial mediating roles of both ego depletion and social undermining behavior. Moreover, leader-member exchange (LMX) relationship quality moderated the association between surface acting and ego depletion such that the relatio

Teenage night owls or early birds? Chronotype and the mental health of adolescents.

Evidence suggests that the timing of sleep (chronotype) impacts mental health in young people, but previous studies have not accounted for sleep duration or school start time in this association, or examined a broad range of mental outcomes. In this study, we investigated the association between chronotype and mental health in a representative sample of adolescents from the 2014 Canadian Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children survey (29,635 students, 362 schools). We examined positive and negative aspects of mental health, using scores for emotional problems (range 0-33), emotional well-being (0-22), behavioural problems (0-28) and prosocial behaviours (0-25). We estimated chronotype using the time of mid-sleep on weekends and examined the associations using multilevel regressions, adjusted for sleep duration, school start time, individual, family and geographic characteristics. Depressive Symptoms Following Later-life Marital Dissolution and Subsequent Repartnering.

The doubling of the divorce rate among individuals over age 50 during the past 20 years underscores the urgency of studying the consequences of gray divorce and subsequent repartnering for adult well-being. We filled this gap by using the 1998-to-2014 Health and Retirement Study to evaluate how the levels of depressive symptoms changed following gray divorce versus widowhood. Individuals who divorced or became widowed already had experienced higher levels of depressive symptoms before dissolution relative to those who remained married. Compared with those who became widowed, those who transitioned to divorce experienced a lower elevation and a shorter time to recovery in depressive symptoms. When repartnering, both groups experienced similar magnitudes of initial reduction and subsequent rates of increase. Both the negative consequences of marital dissolution and the beneficial effects o

Differences and overlap between sarcopenia and physical frailty in older community-dwelling Japanese.

Background and objectives: Sarcopenia and frailty result in loss of function and independence. Sarcopenia may be a risk factor for frailty; however, risk factors for sarcopenia with frailty, and associated incidence of falls and poor quality of life remain unclear. We investigated the clinical characteristics and relevant factors for sarcopenia with frailty in older community-dwelling Japanese. Methods and study design: This cross-sectional study included 331 Japanese community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years. We assessed falls history in the past year, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), including physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS), age, total energy intake per ideal body weight (TEI/kg IBW), total protein intake/kg IBW, vitamin D intake, and exercise habits. Emotion processing in intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a disorder characterized by outbursts of affective aggression, is associated with deficits in regulating emotions. However, less is known about specific deficits in understanding and processing emotions in IED. This study sought to fill that gap by examining components of emotion processing (rumination, alexithymia, and empathy) in those with IED. Participants completed diagnostic interviews and self-report measures, and were categorized into three diagnostic groups: IED (n = 177), Psychiatric Control (PC; n = 171), and Healthy Volunteer (HV; n = 144). Those with IED reported more anger rumination and greater difficulty identifying their feelings than PC or HV participants. Interestingly, those with IED reported higher affective empathy scores than those in the HV group, with no other group differences on measures of empathy. Amongst those with IED,

Perceived discrimination, health and mental health among immigrants in Norway: the role of moderating factors.

Background: Ethnic discrimination is a relatively common experience among immigrants and ethnic minorities. The experience of discrimination can have detrimental effects on an individual's health and well-being. This study investigated the association between perceived discrimination and general health and mental health among immigrants in Norway, in order to identify potential protective factors. Methods: Using data from the Living Conditions Survey among Immigrants 2016, our sample consisted of 4294 participants aged 16-66 years from 12 different countries. Participants were asked about a variety of themes including health and mental health, perceived discrimination, sense of belonging and language proficiency. Results: Around 27% of participants reported perceived discrimination. While perceived discrimination was not associated with general health, logistic regression analyses indica

Meeting patients' spiritual needs during end-of-life care: A qualitative study of nurses' and healthcare professionals' perceptions of spiritual care training.

Aims and objectives: To explore nurses' and healthcare professionals' perceptions of spiritual care and the impact of spiritual care training on their clinical roles. Background: Many nurses and healthcare professionals feel unprepared and lack confidence, competence and skills, to recognise, assess and address patients' spiritual issues. Patients with unmet spiritual needs are at increased risk of poorer psychological outcomes, diminished quality of life and reduced sense of spiritual peace. There are implications for patient care if nurses and healthcare professionals cannot attend to patients' spiritual needs. Design: A qualitative methodology was adopted. Methods: Recruitment was purposive. A total of 21 generalist and specialist nursing and healthcare professionals from North West and South West England, who undertook spiritual care training between 2015-2017, were recruited. Partic

Longitudinal Analysis of the Relationship Between Purposes of Internet Use and Well-being Among Older Adults.

Purpose: There is support for the role of Internet use in promoting well-being among older people. However, there are also contradictory findings which may be attributed to methodological issues. First, research has focused on frequency of online activity rather than how engagement in different types of online activities may influence well-being. Secondly, previous studies have used either cross-sectional designs, which cannot elucidate causality or intervention designs with uncontrolled extraneous variables. In this longitudinal observational study, we test the indirect impact of online engagement for social, informational, and instrumental purposes on older adults' well-being via reducing loneliness and supporting social engagement. Design and method: A population sample of 1,165 adults aged 60-77 (M = 68.22, SD = 4.42; 52.4% female) was surveyed over 3 waves. Using longitudinal mediat

An in-depth look into the association between morningness-eveningness and well-being: evidence for mediating and moderating effects of personality.

Morningness-eveningness and standard personality traits are associated with well-being but few studies have directly compared the two types of construct as correlates of life satisfaction. Influences on well-being common to both chronotype and personality may include shared biological bases for depression and sleep disturbance, tendencies toward social jetlag, and emotion-regulation mechanisms. The current study tested mediation and moderation hypotheses in a sample of 379 Polish adults. The first hypothesis was that conscientiousness and emotional stability traits would mediate the relationship between morningness and life satisfaction. Consistent with previous results, morningness, the two personality traits, and satisfaction tended to be mutually positively correlated. A multiple mediation analysis showed that both traits partially mediated the morningness-satisfaction association. Da

Global Vascular Guidelines on the Management of Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia.

Guideline summary: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is associated with mortality, amputation, and impaired quality of life. These Global Vascular Guidelines (GVG) are focused on definition, evaluation, and management of CLTI with the goals of improving evidence-based care and highlighting critical research needs. The term CLTI is preferred over critical limb ischemia, as the latter implies threshold values of impaired perfusion rather than a continuum. CLTI is a clinical syndrome defined by the presence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) in combination with rest pain, gangrene, or a lower limb ulceration >2 weeks duration. Venous, traumatic, embolic, and nonatherosclerotic etiologies are excluded. All patients with suspected CLTI should be referred urgently to a vascular specialist. Accurately staging the severity of limb threat is fundamental, and the Society for Vascular Surger

The neuroactive potential of the human gut microbiota in quality of life and depression.

The relationship between gut microbial metabolism and mental health is one of the most intriguing and controversial topics in microbiome research. Bidirectional microbiota-gut-brain communication has mostly been explored in animal models, with human research lagging behind. Large-scale metagenomics studies could facilitate the translational process, but their interpretation is hampered by a lack of dedicated reference databases and tools to study the microbial neuroactive potential. Surveying a large microbiome population cohort (Flemish Gut Flora Project, n = 1,054) with validation in independent data sets (ntotal = 1,070), we studied how microbiome features correlate with host quality of life and depression. Butyrate-producing Faecalibacterium and Coprococcus bacteria were consistently associated with higher quality of life indicators. Together with Dialister, Coprococcus spp. were als

Risk Factors and Number of Falls as Determinants of Quality of Life of Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Background and purpose: In older adults, the psychological impact and effects related to the loss of functional capacity are directly related to perceived quality of life (QOL). The predictors of better QOL are increased physical activity, lower prevalence of overweight, lower cases of depression, and lower rate of reported alcohol abuse. On the contrary, the predictors of decreased QOL are female gender, comorbidity, deficient nutritional condition, polypharmacy, loss of mobility, depression and dependency, poor economic conditions, and social isolation and loneliness. Furthermore, QOL in older adults is more dependent on the number of falls than comorbidity. The objective was to investigate the determinants of perceived QOL among independent community-dwelling older adults and to quantify the influence of number of falls and number of risk factors on QOL. Methods: This is a cross-secti

Psychological burden of PTSD, depression, and their comorbidity in the U.S. veteran population: Suicidality, functioning, and service utilization.

Background: Emerging evidence suggests that comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (PTSD/MDD) may impose an even greater burden than either disorder alone. However, nearly all previous studies examining these associations have relied on treatment-seeking samples. This study examined the mental health burden associated with co-occurring PTSD/MDD compared to PTSD and MDD alone using a nationally representative sample of U.S. veterans. Methods: Data were analyzed from National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative survey of U.S. veterans (n = 2,732). Changes in heart rate and blood pressure during nocturnal hot flashes associated with and without awakenings.

Hot flashes (HFs) are a hallmark of menopause in midlife women. They are beyond bothersome symptoms, having a profound impact on quality of life and wellbeing, and are a potential marker of cardiovascular (CV) disease risk. Here, we investigated the impact on CV functioning of single nocturnal HFs, considering whether or not they were accompanied by arousals or awakenings. We investigated changes in heart rate (HR, 542 HFs), blood pressure (BP, 261 HFs), and pre-ejection period (PEP, 168 HFs) across individual nocturnal physiological HF events in women in the menopausal transition or post-menopause (age: 50.7 ± 3.6 years) (n = 86 for HR, 45 for BP, 27 for PEP). HFs associated with arousals/awakenings (51.1%), were accompanied by an increase in systolic (SBP; ~6 mmHg) and diastolic (DBP; ~5 mmHg) BP and HR (~20% increase), sustained for several minutes. In contrast, HFs occurring in undis

Emotional disclosure as a therapeutic intervention in palliative care: a scoping review protocol.

Introduction: Emotional disclosure (ED) is a term used to describe the therapeutic expression of emotion. ED underlies a variety of therapies aimed at improving well-being for various populations, including people with palliative-stage disease and their family carers. Systematic reviews of ED-based psychotherapy have largely focused on expressive writing as a way of generating ED. However, heterogeneity in intervention format and outcome measures has made it difficult to analyse efficacy. There is also debate about the mechanisms proposed to explain the potential effects of ED.We present a scoping review protocol to develop a taxonomy of ED-based interventions to identify and categorise the spectrum of interventions that could be classified under the umbrella term of 'emotional disclosure' in the palliative care setting. By mapping these to associated treatment objectives, outcome measur

Protocol of a longitudinal study on the specific needs of Syrian refugee families in Switzerland.

Background: The ongoing Syrian civil war has led to massive population displacements, leading to the reorganization of the asylum policies of several countries. Accordingly, like other European countries, the Swiss government has recently chosen to implement a specific resettlement program. This program is characterized by the fact that the whole nuclear family is granted a work and residence permit upon arrival, and benefits from enhanced integration services. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effects of the Swiss resettlement program, with a special focus on mental health, while adopting a family perspective. Methods: The outcomes of 15 Syrian families taking part in this program will be compared to those of 15 Syrian families that came to Switzerland through other means (i.e., following the usual asylum procedure, which is much more stressful and time consuming). The mediating effect of health-related hardiness on the degree of physical disability and perceived stress in Chinese female patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare and chronic disease of the central nervous system. The characteristics and main symptoms of recurrent NMOSD lead to an increase in psychological stress and accelerate a decline in the patients' quality of life. The incidence of NMOSD in the Chinese population is much higher than that for other countries and the majority of NMOSD patients are female. In general, there are sex differences in the perception and management of stress, with females experiencing higher levels of perceived stress than males. Thus, we should be concerned about the psychological issues experienced by Chinese female NMOSD patients. Health-related hardness is a psychological adjustment factor that could affect perceptions of illness that impact on NMOSD patients. Perfectly Active Teenagers. When Does Physical Exercise Help Psychological Well-Being in Adolescents?

In the context of physical activity and sport, perfectionism and the regular practice of physical activity are related to psychological well-being and the regulation of psychological resources necessary for adaptation to effort and satisfaction. At the same time, the most active students are also those who show greater appetites for physical education classes. The goal of this work was to identify the influence of perfectionist beliefs and the regularity of the practice of physical exercise on psychological well-being. The participants were adolescents (n = 436) aged between 14 and 19 years (M = 16.80, SD = .77).
