I keep repenting and going back. What is wrong with me?
The short answer
Nothing is wrong with you that is not written into what a human being is.
The report is direct: every son of Adam errs, and the best of those who err are the ones who turn back. Another one goes further than most people are comfortable with. If you did not sin, you would be swept away and replaced with a people who would sin and seek forgiveness, so that He could forgive them.
7 minute read. This page is a draft. It has not yet been read by a scholar and a clinician, and it says so rather than implying otherwise.
This page does not run any exercise on you and it keeps no counter, deliberately. If this is taking hours out of your days, or you are hiding it from a spouse in a way that is corroding the marriage, that is the point to bring somebody in.
Now the part that is usually missing. The cycle you are in has a shape, and shame is what turns it.
You slip. Shame arrives, and it is not the same thing as guilt. Guilt says I did a bad thing. Shame says I am a bad thing. Guilt can be acted on. Shame cannot, so it looks for relief, and the fastest relief available is the same behaviour. Then the cycle runs again, slightly faster.
That is why the strategy of hating yourself harder has never worked for anyone. It is not insufficient hatred. The hatred is the fuel.
What the sound reports actually say
Two of these are quoted often. The third is quoted less, because it is startling, and it is in Sahih Muslim.
Qur’an and Sunnah
God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’
Qur’an 2:286
those who remember God and implore forgiveness for their sins if they do something shameful or wrong themselves- who forgives sins but God?- and who never knowingly persist in doing wrong
Qur’an 3:135
Yet anyone who does evil or wrongs his own soul and then asks God for forgiveness will find Him most forgiving and merciful

What the research says
Across a systematic review and meta-analysis, self-reported problems with pornography were predicted more strongly by moral disapproval of it than by how much a person actually used, which is why a devout person can be in far more distress at far lower frequency.
Grubbs JB, Perry SL, Wilt JA, Reid RC (2019)doi 10.1007/s10508-018-1248-x
Self criticism and shame keep a threat system switched on, while self compassion engages the system that settles it. The two produce opposite behaviour under stress.

Shame is not the brake
What you get toldIf I hated myself enough for it, I would stop. The problem is that I am not taking it seriously enough.
What is actually the caseShame does not stop the behaviour, it shortens the gap to the next one. What the evidence supports is treating yourself the way you would treat somebody you were responsible for, which is not the same as excusing anything.
Guilt and shame are not two strengths of the same thing. Guilt is about an act and it points somewhere: I did this, I can put it right. Shame is about a self and it points nowhere: I am this.
A self that cannot be repaired has nothing to do with its distress except get rid of it, and the fastest route to getting rid of it is the behaviour that was there before. So the harder the shame, the shorter the gap. People describe exactly this: the worst slips follow the most severe self talk.
None of that makes the act fine. It means the tool you have been using is the accelerator.
When tawbah itself becomes the loop
There is a version of this where the repentance stops being repentance.
It looks like this. You repent, and then you are not sure it counted. So you repent again, more carefully. Then you look for a sign that it was accepted, and you cannot find one, so you repeat it. The words are sincere and the mechanism has become a compulsion: a thing done to make a feeling go away, which works briefly and then requires doing again.
If that is familiar, the useful thing to know is that it is a recognised pattern with a name, and that it is treated as obsessive doubt rather than as a shortage of sincerity. The way out is not a better repentance. It is somebody trained, and this site has a whole course on the doubt itself.
What actually shifts it
None of these is a technique for stopping in the moment, and that is deliberate. The evidence sits with what happens before the moment.
- The hour after matters more than the moment. What you do in the hour after a slip decides whether it was one slip or the start of a week.
- Sleep, and the last hour of the day. The great majority of this happens at the same time of night, in the same place, on the same device, tired.
- Change the setting rather than your resolve. Where the device charges is a bigger lever than how much you promise, and it does not run out.
- Tell one person. Secrecy is doing more work here than desire is.
- Count nothing. No streak, no tally. A number you can break is a reason to give up the whole thing on the day you break it.
If it is taking hours out of your days, if you have kept going when it was costing you a job or a marriage, or if you are hiding it in a way that is corroding the person closest to you, that is the point to bring in somebody trained rather than to try harder. A doctor can refer you. Ask for someone who works with compulsive behaviour.

Other questions in this area
- Is therapy haram? No. Seeking a remedy is instructed in the sound Sunnah, and Muslim scholars were writing clinical psychology in the ninth century. What is worth being careful about is the fit of the therapist, not the permissibility of therapy.
- Why do I feel nothing in prayer any more?Because feeling is not what makes a prayer valid, and its absence is a state the tradition already has a name for. The Companions described the same alternation. What tends to be underneath it is exhaustion, low mood, or a standard set so high that missing it feels like failing.
- Is it jinn, or is it mental illness? You are not asked to choose. The tradition affirms that jinn exist and it instructs you to seek treatment, and those two sit together without strain. What causes harm is the delay: months spent going from raqi to raqi while an illness that responds to treatment goes untreated.
