Is depression a sin, or a sign of weak faith?
The short answer
Neither, and this is the belief that does the most damage in Muslim communities, because it keeps people from treatment for years.
Depression is not sadness that has got out of hand. It is an illness with a recognisable course: mood down most of the day most days, interest gone from things you used to want, sleep and appetite disturbed, thinking slowed, and a flatness that does not lift when good things happen. That last part is the giveaway. Ordinary sadness responds to circumstances. This does not.
8 minute read. This page is a draft. It has not yet been read by a scholar and a clinician, and it says so rather than implying otherwise.
If you are having thoughts of ending your life, or of harming yourself, please treat that as urgent rather than as part of this. Tell somebody today: a doctor, an emergency service, or somebody you trust who is in the room with you. Asking for help quickly is not a failure of anything.
The Qur'an gives us a prophet who grieved so long and so hard that he lost his sight, and it does not correct him for it. It records what he said, and it records that he was right to hope.
The treatments work. Talking therapy and medication both have large evidence bases behind them, and neither is a departure from the religion.
The sentence people are actually given
What you get toldIf you had a proper relationship with Allah you would not feel like this. Pray more, make dhikr, and it will lift.
What is actually the caseNothing in the Qur'an or the sound Sunnah makes low mood a sin. The advice also cannot fail, which is what makes it dangerous: if you are still unwell, the fault is placed on you.
It is worth being precise about why this advice fails, because "it is unkind" is not the strongest objection to it.
It cannot be tested. If the person gets better, the advice worked. If they do not, they did not do enough. There is no result that could ever count against it. Anything shaped like that is not guidance, it is a closed loop, and its effect is to turn a symptom into evidence of a religious failing and to delay care by years.
The correction is not to think less of dhikr. It is to stop using it as a test that a person can fail.
A prophet who grieved until he lost his sight
Ya'qub's grief is in the Qur'an at length. He weeps until his eyes turn white. His own family tell him he is destroying himself over it. He does not deny the grief or apologise for it. He says he complains of his sorrow to Allah, and the passage treats that as the right thing to do, not as a lapse.
Alongside it, the sound reports treat illness as something that happens to believers, and as something that expiates rather than accuses.
Qur’an and Sunnah
and he turned away from them, saying, ‘Alas for Joseph!’ His eyes went white with grief and he was filled with sorrow
Qur’an 12:84
They said, ‘By God! You will ruin your health if you do not stop thinking of Joseph, or even die.’
Qur’an 12:85
He said, ‘I plead my grief and sorrow before God. I have knowledge from God that you do not have
Qur’an 12:86
God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’
Qur’an 2:286

Suhaib reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it

What the research says
A meta-analysis covering 409 trials and 52,702 patients found cognitive behavioural therapy more effective than control conditions for depression, and broadly comparable to medication.

How to tell this apart from a hard week
None of this is a diagnosis and this page does not give one. These are the markers a doctor asks about, so that you know what you are looking at.
- It has been most of the day, most days, for at least two weeks.
- Interest has gone out of things you used to want, not only things that are hard.
- Sleep and appetite have shifted in either direction.
- Thinking feels slowed, and decisions that used to be small are not.
- Good news does not lift it, or lifts it for an hour. Ordinary sadness responds to what happens. This does not.
- You have started avoiding people, prayer, or work because starting anything costs too much.
Why worship gets harder, not easier
One of the cruellest parts of this illness is that it takes the thing you would ordinarily reach for.
Depression flattens motivation and reward. That is not a metaphor, it is close to the definition. So the person is told to pray their way out of it by a condition that has removed their capacity to want to pray, and then blamed for the result.
If that is where you are, the useful move is not to aim higher. It is to set a floor you can hit on your worst day and keep hitting it, because the evidence on doing things before you feel like doing them is genuinely strong. The feeling follows the action here, not the other way round.
Tell one person, and see a doctor. Those two, in that order, are what changes the next six months more than anything you will read.
If asking feels impossible, write it down and hand it over. That counts.

When you are told it is weak faith
