You will see wildly different figures for how many children still have ADHD as adults. The range mostly reflects what is being counted: symptoms on a childhood list, or whether life is actually being made harder.

Counted by childhood symptom lists, many people look as though they grew out of it. Counted by whether it still gets in the way, far more have not. For your own decisions the second question is the useful one: not whether you tick the same boxes you did at nine, but whether this is costing you now.

Qur’an and Sunnah

We gave him hearing and sight (Quran 76:2). The equipment a person is given and the test they are set are named in one breath, so the honest question is how you are managing now.

What the research says

A long term follow up of 515 children into young adulthood found symptoms persisted for a substantial proportion, and that reports differed depending on who was asked. Those two findings together account for much of the spread in persistence figures. It is one cohort from a particular treatment study, so the exact numbers belong to that study rather than to everyone.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

How a question is asked decides the answer, and symptoms and impairment are two different questions.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
