Most of what other people do is about their own day rather than about you. That is easier to hold once you have also admitted that in childhood, sometimes, it genuinely was about you.
The two halves have to travel together. Skip the history and the reassurance sounds like someone telling you your memory is wrong. Skip the present tense check and the old expectation rolls on unchallenged. In practice: notice the sting, name where you learned it, then ask what else could explain the short reply you just got.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Everyone is assigned a rank according to their deeds; your Lord is not unaware of anything they do (Quran 6:132). Your standing rests on what you do and on what God sees, not on the tone of somebody's reply.

What the research says
A meta-analysis of fourteen studies found a substantial inverse association between self compassion and psychopathology, meaning people who treat themselves more kindly tend to be faring better. The work is correlational, so the direction is not established and kindness towards yourself may be as much a result as a cause. It is still a reason to watch how the self talk goes when a slight lands.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Naming where an expectation came from makes it possible to test it against what is actually in front of you.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Once you have a reputation for being late or forgetful, people begin watching for it. The rate of your mistakes may not have moved at all, and the number that get noticed keeps climbing.
Before you explain anything about ADHD to someone, ask what they already think it is. What they tell you decides what your explanation can land on.
When you are choosing where to start, take the easy one rather than the important one. Direction matters more than size at the beginning, because these things gather speed whichever way they are pointing.
