Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › What ADHD actually is
Plenty of adults with ADHD keep tripping over rules nobody ever stated: how long a turn in a conversation lasts, when a story has gone on too long, when a joke reads differently than you meant it.
You can learn these the way you would learn anything else you were not taught. Ask one person you trust to tell you plainly what they notice, since most people will soften it into uselessness unless you ask them not to. A couple of concrete habits go a long way: ask a question back before adding your next thought, and count two beats before speaking when you feel the urge to jump in.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Man is ever hasty (Quran 17:11). Speaking before the thought is finished is named there as a general human tendency, which makes it something to work on rather than a private defect.
Yet man prays for harm, just as he prays for good: man is ever hasty

What the research says
A review of shared heritability finds that ADHD and autism co-occur very frequently and share heritable factors, so overlapping social traits are expected rather than anomalous. If reading people has always been effortful, that is a recognised part of the territory. It is a review of heritability rather than a study of social skills training.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
These rules are usually picked up by watching, and watching closely is the thing that is hard here.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
With ADHD the one dependable thing is that you are not dependable in the same way each day. A day when everything works and a day when nothing does can arrive with no reason you can find.
Roughly one person in twenty has ADHD, and the figure holds up across very different countries. You are not part of a modern trend.
The same mistake costs far more when you have no money behind you. Legal trouble is not handed out evenly, and that sits on top of the earning difficulties ADHD already brings.
