The family history is not the warm up before the real assessment. Give it proper time and it will often tell you more than any single rating scale in the folder.

Walk through the family rather than asking one summary question about it. Who struggled at school, who could never sit through a meal, who changed jobs every year, who has a diagnosis and who never got near a clinic. Half an hour spent here changes how you read everything else, because you stop looking at one person in isolation and start seeing a line.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should recognize one another' (Quran 49:13). Family lines are given as something to know one another by, and this is one small practical use of that.

People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should recognize one another. In God’s eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware

What the research says

The updated European consensus statement on adult ADHD describes a condition that often continues into adult life and old age while remaining underdiagnosed and undertreated across many countries. That is expert consensus rather than trial evidence. It is also the reason so many relatives turn out to have carried the same difficulties with no diagnosis ever attached to them.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A pattern running through a family tells you something about the person in front of you that no questionnaire can reach.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
