Stimulant medication does not install an ability you did not have. It raises how much signal is available at the junctions between nerve cells, so the circuits you already own can hold that signal long enough to use it.
Messages pass between nerve cells across a tiny gap, carried by chemicals that are released and then taken back up again. These medicines mostly slow the taking back up, which leaves more signal in the gap for longer. Knowing that helps with the common fear that a tablet turns you into someone else. It is closer to turning up something that was arriving too faintly to work with.

What the research says
A systematic review and meta-analysis of imaging studies found stimulants consistently normalised activity in particular frontal and striatal regions during tasks that need inhibition and attention. That gives an account of how they work rather than a promise about your Tuesday. It also fits the idea of a system being brought back into its usual range rather than pushed somewhere new.

If one family of stimulant did nothing, or felt awful, that tells you very little about the other. Methylphenidate and amphetamine work in overlapping but different ways, and plenty of people who do badly on one do well on the other.
Most long acting stimulant capsules hold two sorts of beads, one that dissolves straight away and one coated to dissolve later. That is the whole reason a single morning capsule can do what used to need a lunchtime dose as well.
Methylphenidate and amphetamine are not two names for the same thing. One mainly blocks dopamine from being taken back up, and the other does that and pushes more of it out as well.
