Prescribers usually begin below the dose likely to work and build upwards. That means the first weeks can be underwhelming by design, and it is not the moment to decide the whole thing has failed.

Ask at the outset what the plan is: the starting dose, what it is being built towards, how quickly, and what you should be noticing at each step. Then you have something to measure against instead of a vague hope. Some non-stimulant options build across several weeks rather than working on the first day, which is another reason to know in advance which kind you are on.

This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.

Qur’an and Sunnah

So truly where there is hardship there is also ease (Quran 94:5). A difficult few weeks at the start of something is not a sign that it will stay that way.

What the research says

A review of atomoxetine's onset found its benefit builds gradually across weeks rather than appearing within hours, which is exactly the expectation worth setting in advance. A network meta-analysis of randomised trials in children and adolescents found stimulants produced the largest symptom reductions of any single intervention, which is why it is usually worth seeing the process through. Neither tells you what your own response will be.

Why it works

The dose is raised slowly to find the smallest one that works, so early on you are still below it.

When not to

If a dose increase brings side effects that frighten you, contact the prescriber rather than pushing through it quietly.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
