Watch someone on a laboratory stop task and two things move together on medication: the fidgeting drops and the stopping gets more accurate.
Holding still and holding back turn out to run on the same machinery. That is why inhibition sits underneath so much else, from waiting your turn to not sending the message at eleven at night. If you are trying to judge whether a dose is doing anything, the small home versions are worth noticing: what got swallowed back that normally would have been said, how the sitting through dinner went.

Qur’an and Sunnah
'God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak' (Quran 4:28). Weakness is named as how we are made rather than as a charge to answer, which is the right footing for a difficulty in holding back.

What the research says
The imaging meta-analysis behind this measured brain activity during these very tasks, and found stimulants normalised frontal and striatal activity while people were holding a response back. That is performance in a controlled setting rather than a day at work, and nobody should read a whole life into it. It is the middle step that makes the rest plausible.

Guanfacine and clonidine arrived here sideways. Both were blood pressure medicines that doctors noticed helped with impulsivity, and the formal approval came long afterwards.
Most people who try do find something that helps, but often not the first thing they try. Not responding to one class of stimulant says surprisingly little about the other.
The alpha-2 medicines work differently again. Picture small ports on the receiving cell that let noise in and let signal leak away, and a medicine that closes them.
