If attention is the diagnosis and reading, writing or maths is still unusually hard, ask whether there is a second thing sitting underneath. The two travel together often enough that one label is rarely the whole story.

A specific difficulty with reading, written expression or number sits alongside attention problems in a large share of cases, and it needs its own support. The adjustments that help with attention will not touch it. For a parent or a teacher, the question is whether achievement was ever properly tested, not just whether attention was. For an adult assessed years ago as a child, it is entirely reasonable to ask again.

Qur’an and Sunnah

You can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know (Quran 16:43). Asking is the instruction, not a sign that you should have worked it out alone.

[Prophet], all the messengers We sent before you were simply men to whom We had given the Revelation: you [people] can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know

What the research says

The updated European consensus statement on diagnosing and treating ADHD in adults exists because the condition is missed and under treated across many countries. That is expert agreement rather than a trial, and it does not put a number on how often a learning difficulty is missed alongside it. It does support the general caution here: assessment is often partial, and asking for the fuller picture is a fair thing to do.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Two difficulties need two answers, and the one nobody named will keep undoing the help given for the other.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
