Give a new habit two months rather than two weeks, and change one thing at a time. The old line about thirty days sets you up to feel like a failure on day thirty one.

Routines that wobble make repetition harder, and repetition is the whole mechanism, so it simply takes longer for some of us. Pick one change, keep it small, and leave everything else alone until it runs by itself. Starting three habits at once spends all your effort on the admin of remembering them.

What the research says

A Cochrane review of interventions to cut sitting time in older adults living at home found small reductions in sedentary time and uncertain effects on wellbeing. Even carefully designed programmes move daily patterns slowly and by modest amounts. Worth knowing before you judge your own pace against something faster.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A habit forms through repeated doing, so a longer runway just means more chances to repeat it.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
