Use a timer you can see rather than a warning you have to remember. A dial that shrinks, or a light that goes from green to red, does the work that five more minutes never quite does.

Time is not something everyone feels passing. Turning it into something you can look at moves the job from guessing to seeing, which is much easier. Put it where the person can actually see it, and let it run without commentary from you. Children take to these quickly, and plenty of adults find their own afternoons easier with one on the desk.

Qur’an and Sunnah

You will sow for seven consecutive years as usual (Quran 12:47). Joseph gave people time in a shape they could picture, which is what any good timer does.

What the research says

A Cochrane review of programmes designed to cut sitting time in older adults at home found small reductions in sedentary time and uncertain effects on wellbeing. Well designed prompts shift daily habits, but by modest amounts. Expect a timer to make transitions smoother rather than to transform anyone's relationship with time.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Seeing time run out is far easier than keeping track of it in your head.
