When nobody has checked whether a benefit lasts, that is not the same as finding out it does not. Following people up for a year costs money that most studies never had.
Two mistakes sit either side of this. One is reading a gap in the evidence as bad news. The other is assuming something lasts because a trial measured people while they were still doing it. If a family asks whether the gains will hold, the honest answer is usually that we do not know yet, and here is why nobody has looked.
Qur’an and Sunnah
That his labour will be seen (Quran 53:40). Effort nobody recorded is not effort that vanished.

What the research says
A Cochrane review of 39 trials found exercise moderately better than no treatment for depression, while noting that against therapy or medication the difference in the highest quality trials was small and not significant. Reviews like that are careful to separate what was measured from what was not. It is a good model for how to talk about a gap without either filling it in or writing the treatment off.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Absence of a measurement tells you about the research, not about the thing being measured.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
When somebody does not take up the movement you suggested, ask what got in the way before deciding they did not want to. Usually it is money, childcare, transport or time.
Moving your body is not a pleasant extra alongside the proper treatment for low mood. It has been tested as a treatment in its own right and it holds up.
Moving your body and being with people you like are the two most reliable things for feeling well. Doing both at once is not a trick, it is just efficient.
