If the screen limit in your house is only your preference, every evening turns into a negotiation about your preference. Borrowing a published figure, roughly two hours a day of leisure screen time for a child over two, moves the argument off you.

The carve-outs matter as much as the number. A video call with a grandparent is a conversation, and a laptop open for homework is schoolwork, so neither belongs in the same bucket as an evening of scrolling. The guidance has been revised more than once and most families sit above it anyway, so hold it as a reference point to work back towards rather than a line you have already failed.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Eat and drink, but do not be extravagant (Quran 7:31). The limit is set inside something permitted, which is the posture a household screen rule can take.

Children of Adam, dress well whenever you are at worship, and eat and drink [as We have permitted] but do not be extravagant: God does not like extravagant people

What the research says

A literature review of children and adolescents links heavy screen use to poor sleep and to cardiovascular risk factors, and reports that duration, content, after-dark use and the number of devices all matter, not just the total. A narrative review of sleep in young adults points the same way, finding stronger associations for bedtime device use and addiction-like patterns than for total screen time. Both review observational work, so they support shaping the hours rather than proving that any particular ceiling is the right one.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A limit that comes from outside the household stops the argument being about whether you are being unfair.
