Ask a child how long they were on the tablet and the answer comes back low. Ask their parent and that answer comes back low too. Neither of them is exactly lying to you.

A child does not volunteer that they went over the limit, and a parent doing their best on every other front rounds their own household down. This runs well beyond screens: any behaviour that feels judged, reported by someone with a stake in the answer, comes back shaded. Where a device keeps its own log, that number is worth more than either account, and it is usually the least argumentative way to open the conversation.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Do not follow blindly what you do not know to be true (Quran 17:36). A number nobody actually measured is a thin thing to build a rule on.

Do not follow blindly what you do not know to be true: ears, eyes, and heart, you will be questioned about all these

What the research says

Much of this literature rests on people describing their own use, and researchers have had to build dedicated instruments for it. One validation study in 910 undergraduates developed a scale for sleep procrastination caused specifically by in-bed phone use, separating it from bedtime procrastination in general. A separate review notes that research on how these devices affect young children has lagged well behind how quickly the devices were taken up. Neither is a comment on your household's estimate, but together they show a field still working on measurement, which is reason enough to hold any single reported figure loosely.

Why it works

People shade the numbers they expect to be judged on, and they do it without ever deciding to.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
